lloydatkinson··on Decoding the obfuscated bash script on a Uniqlo t-shirt
Debian.
lloydatkinson··on Decoding the obfuscated bash script on a Uniqlo t-shirt
Are we really at the "redditor insult" type comments stage of HN now? There is nothing wrong with saying a piece of code is broken.

P ./cool.sh: line 31: bc: command not found ./cool.sh: line 34: bc: command not found ./cool.sh: line 37: bc: command not found E ./cool.sh: line 31: bc: command not found ./cool.sh: line 34: bc: command not found ./cool.sh: line 37: bc: command not found

Very wow. Shame they assumed everyone has "bc"...

lloydatkinson··on Does code cleanliness affect coding agents? A controlled minimal-pair study
> they don't control for breaking the application's tests.

Essentially it's an absolutely worthless study then. This AI fatigue got boring a long time ago, this is just painful now.

lloydatkinson··on Has_not_been_viewed_much
The first one I got was a palm tree growing out of an orange woman's anus... so, I can see why some of this isn't very popular.
lloydatkinson··on Shadcn/UI now defaults to Base UI instead of Radix
MUI is one of the most dreadful UI libraries I have ever had to use.
lloydatkinson··on Shadcn/UI now defaults to Base UI instead of Radix
Personally I'd prefer React Aria; I don't have the patience to try understand why suddenly everyone is rushing to adopt Base UI instead of Radix which itself was once suddenly the thing everyone rushed to instead of Stitches.

Having a library not in anyway related to that to me feels like a big pro.

I have found React Aria to be very good. I really like how its a set of hooks, a set of premade components using said hooks, and I like how you can choose bits of either approach for your own components. Some of the hooks are very useful.

lloydatkinson··on Goodbye, Forever, Probably
So then why is it posted to a vast audience like HN?
lloydatkinson··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
I can feel the AI in the text.
lloydatkinson··on Goodbye, Forever, Probably
I think the posts main mistake is expecting the reader to care about or know this author.
lloydatkinson··on Order a burned CD of your own public GitHub repo
But most repos are over ~700MB. Surely a DVD and if not, why not?

Also seems to be a lot of paranoia in here, GitHub posted it: https://x.com/github/status/2072801888525840476

lloydatkinson··on I Am Behind on C# 14 Features, and I Can't Prove It but Does It Matter?
Seems to be a fairly low effort slop article that a lot of Medium is full of
lloydatkinson··on Writing your own static website generator
For me it’s the font. I don’t enjoy reading prose in a code font.
lloydatkinson··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
It all makes sense when you understand that this is deliberate, to crush the economy and innovation.
lloydatkinson··on .gitignore Isn't the only way to ignore files in Git
This is probably the most batshit insane insecure advice I've ever read on Hacker News ever. And everyone is wondering why NPM based attacks are so prevalent? Advice like this is being followed.
lloydatkinson··on The Forge We Deserve
> Or perhaps everyone moves to some hot-new-AI-first-forge, and then we go through the same cycle of enshittification in 10-20 years.

I don't think it would take years for an AI first platform to enshittify, it would be instant.

lloydatkinson··on Building a serial and VGA "everything console"
Is that bullshit still going on with Tindie?
lloydatkinson··on Show HN: Performative-UI – A react component library of design tropes
I assume this is where charlatan companies like Vercel get their UI from
lloydatkinson··on Age verification tech could put children at greater risk, says think tank
It was never about the children
lloydatkinson··on Ripping a DVD, a federal crime in 1999, requires $22 and free software in 2026
At this point I don't even read Medium, Substack, or any of the other slop monger sites.
lloydatkinson··on Vitamin D3 During Pregnancy and Cognitive Performance at 10 Years
Don't fall for it by replying; it's a troll, probably automated.

lloydatkinson··on Vitamin D3 During Pregnancy and Cognitive Performance at 10 Years
Before anyone gets in a stress, this is obviously some low life engagement bait troll. It might even be totally automated. It saw the word "pregnant" and decided to start on some diatribe about it without even reading the content of the link.

I am really sad that even HN is the target of this type of bullshit.

lloydatkinson··on Win16 Memory Management
I've had this experience a few times so I don't post submissions anymore either (including one of my own articles being flagged despite over a hundred comments). I know people will say vote rigging doesn't happen on HN, but I think it's naïve to think any site on the internet is impervious to vote rigging.
lloydatkinson··on I design with Claude more than Figma now

lloydatkinson··on Japan is gripped by mass allergies. A 1950s project is to blame
Only two types of tree? Even in the 1970's surely that should have been cause for concern.
lloydatkinson··on I’ve joined Anthropic
Does this count as news now on HN?
lloydatkinson··on Fame! A Misunderstanding: A new translation of Albert Camus's complete notebooks
I've been told that it was once common in the UK to be able to send an early morning letter and have a reply in your letter box by afternoon. Now, I have Post Office workers graffitiing envelopes and changing the type of postage I just paid for once I've left the Post Office, letters going missing regularly, a couple of stamps costs £10, and first class can take a week. It's now got so bad that we hand delivered cards over Christmas.

Absolutely pitiful.

lloydatkinson··on Leaving GitHub for Forgejo
Thanks for the write up. This makes me consider Gitea again. That sounds like a frustrating and absurd situation.
