lloydatkinson··on US Forces Exit Iraq
Again?
lloydatkinson··on Booted up in 1993, this server still runs – but not for much longer (2017)
Why even write an article with such little detail?
lloydatkinson··on Improving site performance by shipping more CSS
It seems all the people criticising CSS in JS are doing it at runtime, like styled-component users.
lloydatkinson··on Finally, A True Blue Rose Exists
Mild purple would be a better name
lloydatkinson··on Improving site performance by shipping more CSS
Any time I see criticism of CSS in JS, and a move to CSS modules, I get sad they didn’t just do a bit more research. You can have both, while also not shipping any JS runtime for CSS in JS! And with TypeScript support.

lloydatkinson··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
TIL my banking app goes via satellite internet /s

I have no idea what that quote is trying to say...

lloydatkinson··on Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
Not sure but I'm getting really sad reading anything and seeing this AI speak everywhere.
lloydatkinson··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
I remember it being pretty useful on phone. Now, it can't even "like" a song when I'm driving and I want it to add a song to my Spotify favourites list. It could do a few months ago, now it refuses with "sorry there was a problem with the app".

I've had to resort to asking it to take a screenshot so I can go find the song later. Three quarters of the time it never saves the screenshot though, despite seeing the screen flash out of the corner of my eye.

lloydatkinson··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Their very first attempt is arguably the best one there. I was surprised they didn't like it much and kept going. Then the "Stamp / Letterpress Style (Modernised)" was the only other good one.

So of the two designs made, only two were good, the rest was quite bad and lost all meaning.

lloydatkinson··on Online Z3 Guide
How does it compare to the others? I started trying to use Zinc but I get lost in all the vocabulary and literature which assumes you already have a background in it.
lloydatkinson··on Backups Aren't Simple
Does this include all the image metadata and who knows what else?
lloydatkinson··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
This is amazing. I want to build this. Curious about the authors “full garden” link, surely he doesn’t get that many birds in such a small space of time in his garden, unless he lives next to a park I suppose?
lloydatkinson··on Flawed routers flood University of Wisconsin internet time server (2003)
I yearn for the simplicity of rrdtool and Cacti and all that.

I despise trying to setup Grafana with its constant moving goals.

lloydatkinson··on I refuse to let SPICE die
This is a poor retort considering how well known and infamous "MLP" and "bronies" are on the internet.
lloydatkinson··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Off topic but is there anything like Hacker News but without AI posts?
lloydatkinson··on Stop making swap partitions—use swap files instead
I've always thought it a bizarre and unusual "requirement" that swap gets an entire partition. Windows has it as a file too. At least with this approach, if you change the amount of RAM in your computer, you don't need to go resize the swap partition if you want them to match.
lloydatkinson··on Forgejo <=16.0.3 Critical RCE
That doesn't match my experience at all. I had a Foregjo instance on a Raspberry Pi, and maybe it's typical SD card issues, but the number of times that Forgejo has crashed because it locked its own database and couldn't continue and the number of times repos I mirror from GitHub just mysteriously stop syncing is quite probably the same number of times GitHub has been down this year.
lloydatkinson··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
You sound like a SystemD developer.
lloydatkinson··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?
Just solder?
lloydatkinson··on In defense of two-state theme toggles
I started using computers in the era where customisation and user preferences were “allowed” by software companies. Think the Windows 98 or even Windows 7 theme dialog vs modern Windows. I personally reject this seemingly forced binary choice of light and dark.

Because of this for my site I have four themes, light, summer sunshine, forest, and dark. I’ve seen some sites where the theme is an RGB colour picker even.

In regards to the article, that’s a lot of consternation and frustrating statements about toggles and tri-state toggles. A simple button with a dynamic icon works well as soon as you want to cycle through more than two choices.

lloydatkinson··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
The people making PRs like this. Clearly,
lloydatkinson··on Select * from Internet.blogposts
I don't understand the premise, is this saying short form posts (dare I call them Tweets) on Bluesky are somehow a replacement for long form blog posts?
lloydatkinson··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
Well this would be an improvement over my former NHS GP practice deciding the best way for me to come off antidepressants was immediately stopping them without renewing the prescription or even discussing it with me! I think they just forgot to renew the prescription.
lloydatkinson··on Walgit – a Git server that is one binary in front of an object store
Even the README… ugh.

lloydatkinson··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
What system prompt did you use?
lloydatkinson··on Using the railway network as a flatbed scanner
I think someone did something similar for passing trains. Does anyone remember?
lloydatkinson··on 2,085 Tests, and None of Them Opens the Front Door
> Opens the front door

This is the most recent AI slop phrase the models produce, keep an eye out you'll see it everywhere.

lloydatkinson··on WhatCable: Know what your USB-C cable can do
Are you suggesting there is no middle ground and that simply knowing if a USB-C cable is a USB C cable or a fake one can't be done with a cheap tester?
lloydatkinson··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
The "content not viewable in your region" images really sets the tone.
lloydatkinson··on Software for One
