llllllllllll··on The Death of the Urdu Script
The analogy to open source projects is spot on

Except that when an open source project dies, its code remains in full -- to study, take ideas from, or even potentially be revived at a later time.

When a language dies though, it's pretty much gone. Even if it's received a lot of attention from field linguists, it's near impossible to fully codify the grammar and document the nuances of any language.

llllllllllll··on TorCoin
Paying people won't affect the people who are doing it for altruistic reasons alone, their price is already met.

In the example, the parents picking up their kids on time beforehand were doing so for altruistic reasons alone. When the choice became framed economically, parents started picking up their kids on time less often.

You say they need to raise the fine, but the point here is that it's not economically feasible to raise the reward for running a Tor node indefinitely. The max amount paided out for running a node may be less of an incentive than the existing prosocial incentive to do so.

llllllllllll··on Who Gets to Graduate?
As someone who did well on the SAT precisely because I knew all those obscure synonyms, this is a good move.

Prior changes to make the test more fair for speakers of dialects other than Standard American English were also good, even if they were "political".

llllllllllll··on What If U.S. Cities Just Stopped Participating in the War on Drugs?
There's quite a bit of evidence that the exact opposite is true, that violence increases with stronger police enforcement, due to the destabilization of established trafficking lines and the resulting struggle to fill the void.

Here's a study done on the Marijuana trade in Denmark:

Mexico is an even better example. Minimum 60,000 dead after Felipe Calderon dramatically increased resistance against the cartels.

llllllllllll··on What is an appropriate level of Basic Income?
I'm currently in India and have a consumption level well below that of the average poor American. I'm suffering no particular adverse consequences.

It doesn't make sense to compare the two. Basics costs are much lower in India and Bulgaria. I live on less than the average poor American too, but I also pay 80$/month to live alone in a large apartment.

I can only assume that the "concrete bad thing" that might happen below 14,500$ a year is some combination of malnutrition, homelessness, illness, etc. The number might be less than that, but it's not much less.

The only claim that GP made was that many people consider 7.25/hr or 14,500/year to be too low to cover for basic costs. Why are you taking such an obtuse and provocative tone?

llllllllllll··on Almost half of homeless men had traumatic brain injury in their lifetime
I won't bother responding to your first reply.

To the second, your linked article cites a study that does not control for hours worked, choice of field, or most importantly being in an equivalent position, which I specified in my comment.

Here's the wiki article on the gender pay gap and a relevant quote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Male%E2%80%93female_income_disp...

However, in 2010, an economist testified to the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee that studies "always find that some portion of the wage gap is unexplained" even after controlling for measurable factors that are assumed to influence earnings. The unexplained portion of the wage gap is attributed by some to gender discrimination.

llllllllllll··on Almost half of homeless men had traumatic brain injury in their lifetime
I think the reality is that women are more able to scrape by via prostitution.

Gender roles definitely favor women pretty heavily when it comes to financial matters.

Every study I've seen shows that women are paid less in than men in equivalent positions. I'm having a hard time reconciling anything in your post with reality.

llllllllllll··on Your Friendly Neighborhood Drug Dealer
I'm pretty sure that jaw clenching happens with pure MDMA. I've experienced it on every roll, with stuff sourced from a variety of highly rated Silk Road vendors.
llllllllllll··on When Diamonds Are Dirt Cheap, Will They Still Dazzle?
Why don't more intelligent people realize that the whole expensive engagement ring tradition stupid and ostentatious? I understand the value in signaling to others that you're married, but no need to spend more than 20$ to do that.

My parents went with simple silver (colored?) bands. I'll do the same or just nothing at all. My girlfriend couldn't care less about a ring and doesn't want a formal wedding either... I'd have a hard time being with anyone who felt the need to constantly show off their status with a shiny rock on their hand.

llllllllllll··on Tamiflu: Millions wasted on flu drug, claims major report
Another huge sin of the US drug war is mixing likely-to-be-abused painkillers like codeine with acetaminophen to lower their "abuse potential" -- but, with junkies not being rational, it leads to abusers destroying their livers.

The same is true of dextromethorphan (DXM), the main active ingredient in cough syrup.

For many naive teenagers, cough syrup is their introduction to recreational drug use because it's available OTC. Unfortunately, most teenagers are also impulsive and can't be bothered to do much research beforehand. Threads like this one below, titled "6,276 mg acetaminophen...am I gonna die?", are unfortunately very common.

llllllllllll··on Japanese Toilets: The Future Called 30 Years Ago
Same situation for me in Cambodia. It wasn't until I ran out of toilet paper one time that I caved in and tried the "bum gun". Now it's my preference for sure, cleaner and quicker too.
llllllllllll··on Japanese Toilets: The Future Called 30 Years Ago
Yeah, grew up in Minneapolis and most everyone removes their shoes, especially during the winter as it would create a complete mess if you didn't.

During the rest of the year, it depends a little bit on the residence. I never cared if someone kept their shoes on in the junky apartments I lived in during college, but if it were my parent's well-kept house for example, I'd consider it rude to keep them on.

llllllllllll··on Some young adults disconnecting with 'dumbphones'
There's a ton of legit reasons to not have a smartphone.

Most of the "arty" types you see probably just can't afford one. As someone who over the years has lost their phone a couple times and dropped it many more times, no way am I going to shell out hundreds of dollars for a new one every time that happens.

I also don't own a smartphone because I already spend enough time at my computer, and doing all the same things on a tiny screen with no mouse/keyboard/etc. would feel like a massively downgraded experience.

For me, the only appealing features of a smart phone are tethering and GPS. I'm fine without them though. I moved to a new city ~6 months ago, and I already know my way around much better than most (especially useful because most of the city is not well documented on Google Maps / OpenStreetMap). Probably would not be the case if I had GPS everywhere.

llllllllllll··on Some young adults disconnecting with 'dumbphones'
I have one too. It fell out of my pocket while biking last week, and then got run over by a Lexus SUV. Popped the battery back in and it was good as new.

The flashlight is handy too, major upgrade from my last dumb phone.

llllllllllll··on Standing Desk Do It Yourself (DIY)
My DIY standing desk is an 18" wooden coffee table with a plastic storage container, the box my speakers came in, and the box my external monitor came in. The storage container and one of the boxes act as a pedestal for my laptop (which I removed the broken screen from a few months ago) and my speakers and the other box hold up the external monitor. A spare t-shirt is placed under the front or back of the base of the monitor depending on whether I want it tilted up or down, and to what degree.

It's hardly stylish but functionally I couldn't ask for more.

Standing is nice precisely because it's slightly uncomfortable to do for longer periods of time. It forces you to stretch, move around, and take periodic breaks from staring into the screen.

You'll appreciate this, an entirely acapella rendition of Corridors of Time

He has a couple albums worth of acapella video game music out. Here's another of my personal favorites:

llllllllllll··on Ukraine protests: Before and after photos from Kiev's battle zone
My friends were eating at Mickey's Diner (in downtown St. Paul, MN) when the protests were broken up by police.

They heard the calls to disperse but wanted to finish eating, so they stayed a few minutes extra figuring that they weren't a part of the protests anyway so they'd be fine. A few minutes later they exited the restaurant and got the full treatment: tear-gassed, tackled, handcuffed, and taken to jail. They saw someone who was running away get hit in the head with a tear gas canister.
