ljcn··on Arm announces its new premium CPU and GPU designs
3rd party javascript turned off here - page loads quickly, is ad-free, readable, and includes the figures.
ljcn··on H.264 is magic (2016)
It's difficult to describe but I read it more like converting the raw data (a list of results) to a generator. Akin to the "compression" described in this xkcd: https://www.xkcd.com/1155/
ljcn··on Exxon knew that fossil fuels were influencing the climate in 1978
This is obviously not true. How would you stop runaway methane release from permafrost for example?
ljcn··on Exxon knew that fossil fuels were influencing the climate in 1978
"A lot" maybe, but I suspect the majority would do the opposite and deny/understate the problem.

Also the parent comment is more about risk management. The sensible thing to do in the absence of information is precisely to imagine the worst outcomes and act with them in mind. The precautionary principle is a statutory requirement in law in some jurisdictions to help avoid the worst outcomes.

ljcn··on Why play a music CD? No ads, no privacy terrors, no algorithms
Perhaps. I have heard they also master differently for vinyl since it can't provide the same dynamic, frequency, or stereo range as digital. Some listeners find the result more appealing.
ljcn··on A critical step to reduce climate change
> And yet no current or planned EV seems to be offering this.

In the UK, Ovo customers can do vehicle to grid transfers from their Nissan Leaf, with an appropriate charger.

ljcn··on Up to one million species are on the verge of extinction, U.N. panel says
The message you're replying to specifically said not vegan. Your points about farming might be good but the vegan stuff is a straw man.

The best diet for health and the environment[0] is high in whole grains, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, with small amounts of meat and sugar. Making meat a treat (as written above) is absolutely right.

ljcn··on Microsoft, currently the most valuable company, is having a Nadellaissance
To be fair the comment says "I bought it because x, y, z", which is probably true; not "it has gone up because x, y, z", although that might be implied.
ljcn··on The hyper-specialist shops of Berlin
The answer is probably that shop owners would rather work in a shop that satisfies online orders than in a warehouse.
ljcn··on Timex Is Making Watches in America Again
And that's a standard quartz; the specs say -10 to 20 s/month.

Still ~10x more accurate than a mechanical watch, but not ~200x more accurate as thermocompensated ones are (as mentioned in the message you were replying to).

ljcn··on Advances in Weather Prediction
The Climendo app takes an average of 3-5 forecasts and presents a confidence measure.

Not as good as proper confidence from the model ensemble, but better than what you normally get from a single forecaster.

There's a web interface too.. https://climendo.com

ljcn··on Why the Flow of Time Is an Illusion
> I am not a cosmologist, but if all of space reached thermal equilibrium, if space does have any mass (perhaps a tiny amount from the dark energy it contains?), and the entire universe is essentially one uniform mass, wouldn't that mass then collapse upon itself, in a kind of big bounce?

Nor am I, but as long as the universe keeps expanding and everything keeps flying apart the average density will probably continue to decrease and gravity will be too weak to cause a collapse.

Or are you saying dark energy (intrinsic to space itself) would eventually dominate and concentrate?

ljcn··on Changes to Models S and X allow them to travel longer without larger batteries
I heard it is a hangover from the days of using mineral oil.

Modern synthetic oils last much longer.

ljcn··on 5g Detrimental to Insects
I assume it's like phantom in the medical imaging context - a kind of test object.

The OED says: A physical or computer-generated model used to calculate radiation doses, evaluate or enhance imaging techniques, etc.

ljcn··on Lyft vs. Uber: A Tale of Two S-1’s
> I made a few dollars, a working laptop found some home, and i threw less into the trash!

I love this about auctions, it seems to preserve value. Rather than e-waste going for scrap it might go to a collector, upcycler, charity, or specialist recycler.

ljcn··on Idaho sets record low solar price as it starts on shift to 100pct renewables
I don't think your premise is correct. There have indeed been a lot of environmental scares (ozone layer, acid rain, ..., which were fortunately fixed with international effort), but mainstream climate science has if anything been far too conservative. For example, we're at the upper end of climate model ensembles from just ten years ago.[0]

ljcn··on The Death of External Storage: Where's Google?
Ghost Commander and Total Commander are good alternatives. The former is on F-Droid.
ljcn··on Lyft prices IPO at top of range
Good question. Of the top 100 urban areas in the world by population, sorted by density, the San Francisco bay area is number 88 and New York City is number 90.

In addition, Los Angeles is number 87. The only other entry in North America is Toronto-Hamilton (#83).

The top 90 cities (i.e. up to and including New York City) have a combined population of 965 million.

Also note that smallest in the top 100 is 4.3 million, so this probably misses a lot of smaller but more dense cities.

ljcn··on Cycling heaven: The African capital with 'no traffic'
Buses are mentioned in the article.
ljcn··on How expensive do prescription drugs need to be to fund research?
Perhaps the total volume is higher, but this doesn't lead to downwards price pressure since there are many small(ish) buyers.

The opposite is often said for the NHS in the UK - certainly a smaller buyer than the US aggregate, but maybe a larger player than any one of them?

ljcn··on Rotating Black Holes May Serve as Gentle Portals for Hyperspace Travel
Not my area but I think the fuel is the problem, not the power source. Even a fusion-powered drive needs to spit something out the back to accelerate (e.g. ions), so you need to carry many kg of ionizable fuel.

You misunderstood - the user wrote that the improvement probably won't continue due to climate change (which is expected to negatively impact developing countries more than developed).
