livingparadox··on After GitHub CEO backs Black Lives Matter, workers demand an end to ICE contract
Well, libertarians are not running things. So the government will not be leaving you alone of its own accord.
livingparadox··on Bye, Amazon
It stands for "Social Justice Warriors".

This originally meant someone standing up for minorities and the disadvantaged, but the term has been twisted into a derogatory insult for anyone who disagrees with conservatives on social issues.

livingparadox··on China holds drill to shut down 'harmful' websites
Youtube/facebook won't throw you in jail for creating a competitor. The government will usually take exception to you trying to start your own government on their land.
livingparadox··on China holds drill to shut down 'harmful' websites
Well, the difference is still there. You can switch to a different social network without too much difficulty (you miss out on that platform, but that's as far as the cost goes); You can't just declare yourself as part of a different country without actually up and moving there, changing your job, getting the new place, and rebuilding most of your connections, and potentially learn a new language depending on where you move.
livingparadox··on Out of all major energy sources, nuclear is the safest
Do you have a source for your claims?
livingparadox··on Our Copyfish extension was stolen and adware-infested
There's a good flag to make "Read data from all websites" more reasonable.

chrome://flags/#extension-active-script-permission

It requires a "deliberate, explicit user action" to run the extension on the page each time even if it asks for that permission. And if you really do want an extension enabled 24/7 (such as vimium), then you can select a check box in the extensions page which allows the extension to run without specifically enabling it each time.

livingparadox··on Windows Subsystem for Linux is out of beta
You can definitely write to the windows file system from WSL, so long as you don't need admin privileges to do it. I use it at work and 99% of the files I edit are in a windows controlled drive.
livingparadox··on Sperm Count Dropping in Western World
Why is social pressure necessarily feminine and violence necessarily masculine?
livingparadox··on Ask HN: How often do you experience self-control issues?
Hard to say currently, as my phone broke about a month ago and I intentionally didn't order a new one until just recently.

I'm also just bad at quantifying anything as a whole. I generally have trouble getting distracted whenever important things aren't attention-grabbing and shiny things are few clicks or taps away...

livingparadox··on Ask HN: How often do you experience self-control issues?
I experience self control issues on a fairly regular basis.

Computer, phone, daydreams, etc. I'm just recently keeping bad sleep habits at bay (usually, still occasionally let the lure of the shiny keep me up).

On a solution-level, I've found that exercise + proper rest tends to have the greatest singular impact on my self control. My willpower tends to scale with my energy-levels. In addition, adding little obstacles between you and the distraction (noprocrast setting on hackers news, forestry app for phone, etc) can often give me just enough time to pull myself back to important things.

livingparadox··on Soti – A $1B firm built in a basement
Does it matter if the house in seattle is cooler if you're never going to be able to buy it?
livingparadox··on What the brain's wiring looks like
That very much depends on whether the complexity increases intelligence/comprehension or whether it is merely increased complexity.
livingparadox··on Pattern Matching with TypeScript
I had to reread it a few times to parse it. Its result of "adding" the uppercase of 1 that should be 11, not the uppercase itself.

In other words, the result of "makeUppercase" should be a string, not a number.

livingparadox··on Why We Chose Typescript
TypeScript is, strictly, a superset of javascript. You probably could "jump directly to TypeScript" but you would not be able to "skip learning JavaScript" as TypeScript is based off the concepts in JS.

That being said, I don't see why you couldn't learn them concurrently; you can learn the basics of TypeScript and then simply rewrite any relevant JS example code into TypeScript to learn JS code in a TS context.

Edit: I should also point out that integrating with any JS libraries may require you to install the '@types/' package alongside it to maintain type-safety. For example, if you're using jQuery, you can install the '@types/jquery' package which will expose all the type information for the jquery package.

livingparadox··on Thoughts on Insurance
If you read the very next paragraph, you'll note that they meant that nobody can now know the total costs beforehand. I.e., the total costs often include events that they are unable to reliable predict in advance, so they are unable to give you a reliable or accurate estimate of costs until its all done (which is when billing occurs)
livingparadox··on Jeff Bezos tweet seeking philanthropic ideas draws 42,000 replies
Well, its not like building tiny homes are going to make most people who would normally purchase a normal/large size home switch to a tiny home. It would probably net increase the amount of construction work because you've now expanded the available market (lower income people can now purchase a home).
livingparadox··on Ask HN: How was your experience with AWS Lambda in production?
Does webpack work for node.js code? I was under the impression that webpack was specifically for front end code.
livingparadox··on It’s Complicated: Unraveling the mystery of why people act as they do
I've heard that its intended to be the ASCII code for "*" which represents a wildcard (i.e., anything).

Is that what you had in mind or do you have different interpretations?

livingparadox··on Rent a Minority
I disagree. Its referring to a very specific kind of white man who tends to flock to these things like moths to a flame and very much does try to reframe things to make white men look like the real victims.

I say this as a white man who calls out racism regardless of whether its directed at minorities or the cis white man.

livingparadox··on Rent a Minority
HN isn't just silicon valley folks
livingparadox··on Is Arduino no longer open-source?
The answer to your parent comment's question is "no", but their question was the inverse of the post's title.

So, this actually is an exception to Betteridge's law; the answer to the question is "yes, arduino is no longer open source".

livingparadox··on FreeWallet.org scam – millions stolen
At least one person in the thread has claimed that part of their transaction has actually gone through, finally.
livingparadox··on Fractal planting patterns yield optimal harvests, without central control
Its actually that planting "in synchrony" reduced pests. Balancing that with limited water supplies resulted in the fractal pattern, which created close to an optimal yield.
livingparadox··on Verelox Wiped by Ex-Admin
Then you still have two users with a complete password set, from which you can either reconstruct the third permutation or generate a new set.
livingparadox··on Verelox Wiped by Ex-Admin
If they're being added to a folder, you can remove your own permissions from the folder. At least if you have write access.

If they're sharing them individually with you... Then clearly they're not paying attention

livingparadox··on Ask HN: What are we doing about Facebook, Google, and the closed internet?
You might be interested in its spiritual successor neocities, then

livingparadox··on WebAssembly 101: A developer’s first steps
Why do you want to do that? afict, this shouldn't be increasing the attack surface any more than almost any new language feature. Its spec-ed to run in the same VM as JS is currently.
livingparadox··on Cheap Recurring Payments with Stripe and AWS Lambda
Some banks will even send the check on your behalf.

I use Simple bank and they can automatically mail out checks on your behalf, if you set it up.

livingparadox··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
Its a joke. Based on the trope of people having a poor relationship with their in-laws.
