lisplist··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
From an ego perspective, the artisan craft of programming basically being dead at this point makes me sad, having spent so much of my life getting good at it (or at least trying to).

From technological enthusiast perspective - if you can't find an endless stream of uses for this technology, I really don't know what to tell you anymore. I gave credence to AI naysayers for a while, but at this point I feel like its akin to denying gravity exists.

Who are we to gatekeep software development? So many people have gained the ability to interact with computers in ways they never dreamed of before! For me, I've never felt so engaged in software development, even if I'm no longer writing it line by line.

Like you say, there are a lot of negative externalities to this technology, but its something we're going to have to solve rather than dismissing it outright. The industrial revolution caused all sorts of problems! But you can't argue we're worse off because of it.

Unfortunately this is just the entry price for LLMs. With the exception of the Qwen 27B models, I personally haven’t found a ton of use cases for models less than 200B. With the right setup, fine tuning, etc, you can make small models do cool things, but hard to please everyone given the insane hardware costs at the moment and the comparably cheap API costs.

The market is often either wrong or distorted by existing government policies. For some things, subsidies need to be involved to create a new industry where there isn't one. For others, subsidies are a waste of money leading to graft and excess. If I were the one with the credit card, I'd be betting big on hydroponics/vertical farms, medium to high density housing, and high speed rail.

Despite plenty of demand, high density housing still isn't getting built nearly as fast as it should. High building costs, zoning laws, and the ability to just suburban sprawl to infinity mostly prevents this.

Pretty much all vertical farming startups have gone bankrupt. There are endless benefits to vertical farms, but we don't do it because existing farms are cheap in comparison to the necessary investment to make this viable.

We don't build high speed rail because it's a multi-decade long project involving massive logistics, training programs, lots of land rights issues, and the fact that for short to medium distance trips people would probably still prefer to drive since once you get to your target destination, there's still no way to get around without a vehicle.

Thanks, will have to check that out! Also use Strava, so maybe I should just refer to the heatmaps

We spend billions every year in gas subsidies. We spend billions every year in food subsidies. For energy independence and the carbon reduction alone, this is a worthwhile investment even if the upfront costs are substantial.

I know lots of people struggling to get by and I can assure you their situation doesn't improve their mental health.

Maybe slightly unrelated, but I've done a lot of road trips throughout the US, and there is so much land that is used unproductively, it's really incredible. Land that could be used for energy, food, or housing, just sitting empty or with abandoned structures.

Imagine if we just paid people to coat their properties in solar panels - throw them on your roof, lawn, wherever you have the space. We could drive energy prices down to nothing. We could pay people to install ADUs. The resources are there, but the imagination and commitment are not.

Instead, I'm looking at a $40k+ solar install for my very small house and a breakeven on investment in maybe 10 years for a house I probably won't live in by then.

I switched to DDG about a year ago and it works fine for me. For some queries, Google still surfaces better results, but DDG is good enough that I don't really miss it.

The only Google service I haven't been able to replace is YouTube - no real alternative. I still use Google Maps as well, but could probably switch to Apple maps without missing much. For hiking trails, Apple Maps has often been superior. I briefly tried OpenStreetMaps years ago, but the lack of traffic data and the fact that it gave me bad directions made it untenable.

There’s some pretty nice stuff you can get. Vacation packages as well. Just takes forever to earn enough to do anything useful with.
lisplist··on Why Germany Is Rich but Germans Are Poor and Angry
Tbf there are some (mostly rich) people that believe wealth inequality isn’t a problem as long as the standard of living keeps going up for everyone. But that falls apart once you consider monopolization generally leads to rent seeking and not better services

lisplist··on IBM cancels 401k matching, replaces with proprietary pension fund RBA
They used to wait until end of year to match funds until recently they switched to monthly matching. So if you left before end of year, your match didn’t pay out iirc. Now they’re getting rid of 401k matching entirely so suppose it’s a moot point.
lisplist··on IBM cancels 401k matching, replaces with proprietary pension fund RBA
Legally, I believe this is a pension fund. Still, they have to be pocketing the difference somewhere because why else would they make such a controversial decision that also increases administrative overhead?

First 3 years, yes. After 2026 you either get 3% or whatever the 10Y is yielding, whichever is greater
lisplist··on IBM cancels 401k matching, replaces with proprietary pension fund RBA
The fund is based on 10Y treasury bonds which have significantly underperformed the S&P historically. First 3 years, you get a 6% guaranteed return. The remainder, you get only 3% guaranteed. For reference, my HYSA yields 4% a year.

Speculation is that it’s beneficial to IBM because the money will be under their management rather than Fidelity’s. What exactly they’re allowed to do with that money, I’m unsure.

lisplist··on I live in my car: Parking lots open for those who can afford a car but not rent
Tbf I don’t mind renting as a concept. The problem I had was ever increasing rents and walls so thin you can hear your neighbor snoring. If we didn’t build buildings with such terrible noise insulation and had better rent control, it wouldn’t be so bad.
