lisplist··on IBM cancels 401k matching, replaces with proprietary pension fund RBA
Fair, just giving a point of reference

First 3 years, yes. After 2026 you either get 3% or whatever the 10Y is yielding, whichever is greater
lisplist··on IBM cancels 401k matching, replaces with proprietary pension fund RBA
The fund is based on 10Y treasury bonds which have significantly underperformed the S&P historically. First 3 years, you get a 6% guaranteed return. The remainder, you get only 3% guaranteed. For reference, my HYSA yields 4% a year.

Speculation is that it’s beneficial to IBM because the money will be under their management rather than Fidelity’s. What exactly they’re allowed to do with that money, I’m unsure.

https://www.reddit.com/r/IBM/comments/17lc4jz/is_ibm_replaci... link to the thread. Not sure why the link got replaced
lisplist··on I live in my car: Parking lots open for those who can afford a car but not rent
Tbf I don’t mind renting as a concept. The problem I had was ever increasing rents and walls so thin you can hear your neighbor snoring. If we didn’t build buildings with such terrible noise insulation and had better rent control, it wouldn’t be so bad.

They don’t require verification unless that’s changed very recently
lisplist··on Yazi: Fast terminal file manager based on async I/O
To add to this: I had lots of problems with Emacs terminal emulators until I switched to VTerm. Most things work like you’d expect in VTerm.
lisplist··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
Lol this would make home price inflation even worse. Great if you have a mortgage, terrible for FTHB. Kinda like Prop 13 in California.
lisplist··on Shrinkflation, SanDisk Style
Tangent, but I think the practice of shrinkflation should be made illegal altogether (although not sure how you would enforce it). If you need to increase prices, fine, but it's a complete waste of packaging materials to just give less of something for the same price in the same package, not to mention the environmental harm.

lisplist··on Ask HN: Given AI advancements, is a master’s degree in CS worthless?
Thank you all for your responses!

I realize I’m being a bit hyperbolic and it’s really hard to predict where things will be in a decade, but I’m pretty early in my career and am just concerned what my prospects will look like as this stuff evolves.

It feels like I’ve got two paths:

A) Keep learning and hope it’s enough to keep up

B) Quit now and focus on learning skills that are difficult to automate in order to get a head start on the transition away from dev work

lisplist··on Ask HN: Given AI advancements, is a master’s degree in CS worthless?
This has definitely been on my mind. A Master’s might help you stand out a little more when everyone is fighting for roles in the downturn.
lisplist··on Ask HN: Given AI advancements, is a master’s degree in CS worthless?
This is a big concern of mine. Maybe all the dev jobs don’t go away, but our wages are suppressed enough that I might as well do something else.
lisplist··on Ask HN: Given AI advancements, is a master’s degree in CS worthless?
My motivation is learning useful, relevant skills that

A) Are intellectual fulfilling

B) Help me remain employable in the current rapidly changing world of tech

I brought up HVAC repair because it’s a skill that is at least currently difficult to automate and pays reasonably well if you own your own business.

lisplist··on Atlassian products have been down for 4 days
Could it be related to this? https://mobile.twitter.com/Gi7w0rm/status/151278985519709389...

Further down they mention Atlassian is affected. Unsure what to make of it
