Unfortunately, IME, the effort vs financial reward ratio is completely blown out of the water by general software. I make >3x what the postdocs were making with less experience, less education, and (speaking generally) less intelligence.
Obviously there are industry positions that pay better, but the general trend is you will be compensated far less than you could doing general software development.
These questions test for some mixture of (1) IQ, (2) communication abilities, (3) willingness to put in the time, and (4) ability to learn.
Traditional interviews which discuss candidate experience test for only (2) and knowledge questions test for only (3) and (4).
To be frank, if you don't have the time or ability to review 1-2 classes worth of college material, then that raises some serious red flags.
Also, this doesn't seem like a big deal. Just ignore the spammy emails for a while and close the pull requests.
Also, the article explicitly mentions that this is a breach of contract, so there's very little chance this actually happens. Just more political noise from the same type of people that always generate political noise.
Twitter absolutely safe-harbors the extreme left. I think it's the only tech company I would refuse to work for due to their moral failings.
Honestly, it's weird that an article criticizing the CHOP security debacle would decide to leave out pertinent details that help bolster the critique.
As a side note, there is both/r/seattle and /r/seattlewa. Both of them are seeing heavy traffic from out-of-towners right now, but the general divide is /r/seattle is the left-leaning one and /r/seattlewa is the right-leaning one (at least within the context of Seattle).
Since perma-WFH, I "work" for maybe 65 hours and get at most 15 hours of actual work done.
1.) How likely is this to actually happen? Are there any talks with nations for purchasing land? How many members would actually uproot their entire lives to go live in this experimental nation?
2.) I'm absolutely a libertarian, but even if I have to admit that some of those that care so deeply as to self-select for something like this are likely to have some... oddities.
3.) Libertarian principles have never been very popular with women, so I imagine most of the interested parties are men. If this were to last for a long period of time, I would imagine that most of the unmarried men would compensate for that by finding wives from the neighboring developing nations. I don't have anything against that, but I feel like this new nation would quickly get the reputation of being Thailand 2.0.
For example, the most common political debate right now isn't Biden vs. Trump, it's whether or not Biden is left-wing enough to deserve a vote.
That being said, the people with the megaphones that constantly send emails about politics that somehow jump through five hoops to ensure every issue is directly tied to race should put their actions where their mouth is. If 1000 people give an ultimatum that they'll quit if something isn't done, maybe something will actually be done. If not, then the biggest propagators of political distractions are gone. And then those of us that are confused how politics (of a certain slant) became actively encouraged in the workplace can stop aggressively adding email filters for the latest cause of the week.
Why should the strikers not show solidarity with the non-strikers by stopping the strike? Or show solidarity with the health care workers by enduring difficult times for the common good?
Why do strikes always seem to be surrounded by such emotional rhetoric? To me, that's a warning sign that there's no underlying logic.
Which makes sense, as the quantity is what actually matters to the delivery person.
I was actually in a similar situation, where Capital One offered 90K for Richmond, VA and it seemed better than ~120k offer in the Bay Area. But then I got a Google offer and stopped considering both of the others.
The high-CoL companies really only make sense financially if you're in the upper tiers of pay (and/or on the path to reaching that level of pay).
A negligible number of people are willing to sacrifice tangible functionality for intangible feelings of privacy that almost certainly will never impact them in any meaningful way. DuckDuckGo needs to make large improvements to their search results if they want to capture anyone outside of this niche market.
