Information systems project manager for most of the French ISP and telecommunications operators since 1997. Arguably one of the worst PHP, Bash and Perl script authors in the world.

liotier··on What happens when ambassadors are summoned by the host country?
French Jew here. Antisemitism exists in France, like everywhere in Europe - we have some history about that going back at least a millennium. But Israel's propaganda interpretation of what antisemitism is and how much of it exists is laughably exaggerated... And it is used as a pretext by the far right to discriminate against Muslims.
liotier··on A new database on police use of force and misconduct in California
Sousveillance - the first step to taking power to account.
liotier··on Eleven Music
Polemics about generative AI might indeed benefit from separately addressing art and entertainment. Generative AI in art is worth debating, but entertainment is not even a question: entertainment is a proven market for mass-produced slop, where artless works just fine and art is marginally valued.
liotier··on A dive into open chat protocols
> In any case, though, it's clear that moderation needs to be baked into the protocol at a lower level than it currently is.

Lesson learned and relearned across all social and communication software... Moderation cannot be grafted on later: it is core, it makes or breaks the social experience.

HN, Bluesky and Reddit, for example, got it right, each in their own way for their own use case, and I believe it one of the main reasons of their success.

We are slow to wake up, but the hectic mood in the French arms industry is unprecedented and buying American is nowadays considered a stopgap - temporary evil.

Also, European defense firms are getting more competitive, by the simple virtue of larger orders enabling more investment.

liotier··on Yes in My Bamako Yard
In 2016, I visited a call center in Bamako - it was powered by an Asterisk VOIP system... And that is what I expected the article to cover...

Anyway, yes... Think America is the land of infinite suburban sprawl ? Meh - Africa is where it's at, with the obvious severe negative impact on urban development, mass transportation etc. Similar challenges as the USA, but a tenth of the resources.

liotier··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
> leave the change from l'addition

Yes, that is the basic tip if you expect to come back to that restaurant and get an upgraded welcome.

But even with no tip, being a regular counts - tip or no tip, you are good business and worth cultivating.

liotier··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
France here - no tip is the norm, tip is for service above & beyond... But, contrary to the USA, everyone gets a proper living wage !
liotier··on Friction and Not Being Touched
Now that's friction !
liotier··on Vector Tiles are deployed on OpenStreetMap.org
> I'm quite happy that these tiles cut down on the clutter in the original OSM tiles. It made it very hard for me to actually use them for navigation

The Openstreetmap.org tiles are a demo and a contributor quality assurance tool - they are not meant for end-user applications, hence the rather over-the-top selection of map objects.

If it solves your problem, why would you care about what other people do with it ? Free software isn't charity, just a way to find allies - usage by other people is a side effect which doesn't cost anything to the project and is entirely irrelevant apart as some input for the user-to-ally pipeline.
liotier··on Open Source Maintenance Fee
> Users and companies can force you to continue to work on your project. Otherwise they'll fork it, make it worse, blame you for bugs they introduced in the fork, say that the original project wasn't that good, etc.

How is it bad ? How does it force you to do anything ? It doesn't even interfere with your thing, which will keep scratching the itch your built it to scratch.

That is the whole beauty of free software: no one has any leverage on your project - any cooperation is voluntary !

I've heard so much "you should do this", "you should conform to this standard", "why don't you help me make this thing the way I want it ?", "your thing keeps me from making money with it" etc. Well buddy, I'm grateful for your opinion, and now I'll go do the thing with the people with whom I found shared goals.

liotier··on Open Source Maintenance Fee
Scratch your own itch. Anyone thinks you are making a mighty nice itch-scratching machine and wants to make it better ? Welcome, let's cooperate !

Others who want you to scratch their personal itch ? Offer professional services or maybe ignore them if you have anything better to do !

You may like your itch scratching device as it is - that it has a pile of CVE to its name doesn't bother you while you sip your tea, scratch your back and listen to the wind in the leaves...

liotier··on EU commissioner shocked by dangers of some goods sold by Shein and Temu
... And that is why, in the case of illicit products, current French legislation heaps responsibility on the platform is they fail to efficiently prevent sales by their hosted traders.
liotier··on EU commissioner shocked by dangers of some goods sold by Shein and Temu
> A regulator can tell temu/shein/amazon/etc to take down the seller, or even the brand and the next day two new ones prop up selling the product from the same factory.

If that game remains afoot for too long, the buck stops at the distributor - who can't hide from the EU behind ever-shifting randomly generated brands.

It took Trump for the Europeans to realize that De Gaulle was right.

The consequences of the European Union realizing the were the USA's protectorate are not going to please the USA though... Buy ITAR-free, buy European !

liotier··on Show HN: I built this to talk Danish to my girlfriend – works with any language
Same in French. When my colleagues tell me about "le repository Git", I love to answer about "le repositoire git" - sounds mightily quaint but that French word is actually the one through which the Latin repositorium percolated to English.
liotier··on Phrase origin: Why do we "call" functions?
I just connected the dots... The identifier digits in the Dewey Decimal classification are called "call numbers" !
liotier··on Why are there no good dinosaur films?
> that sequel tease at the end ?

Raaaah - I refuse to believe this scene exists. It doesn't exist in my own cut of The Matrix. And captive humans are biological computers, not silly batteries !

liotier··on Seine reopens to Paris swimmers after century-long ban
> and every summer, young people, possibly a little drunk, jump into the water as a dare from bridges near Notre-Dame

After ending high school exams in 1993, we jumped into the Seine from Pont de Neuilly. I suppose this sort of antics have been going on since times immemorial and without counting bacteria beforehand... But I'm glad the river has cleaned up !

My first impression upon hitting the water: 1 - it is actually water (I expected mud !), 2 - wow, there is actually current and the shore goes by rather fast... No problems of any sort.

Anyway, it is fun - do it, and have a spotter to check for ships !

liotier··on Ask HN: How did Soham Parekh get so many jobs?
> eighteen hour waking days leave a lot of boredom time, no matter how many hobbies you have

Lol - you don't have enough hobbies.

liotier··on OpenFLOW – Quickly make beautiful infrastructure diagrams local to your machine
Reading the title, I expected cute network diagrams from aggregated OpenFlow telemetry !
liotier··on I built something that changed my friend group's social fabric
> The expectation is that we're always connected and respond quickly

As someone who twenty years ago published his XMPP presence to his web page (http://serendipity.ruwenzori.net/index.php/2006/02/27/jabber...) among other oversharing excesses, I have now swung opposite: online presence indicator is the first functionality I disable when I join any sort of forum and my tablet is almost always silent... Asynchronous interrupts least and unbroken concentration is most valuable, so asynchronous mostly - with exceptions for eligible professional contacts and sentimentally close people.

liotier··on Microsoft's big lie: Your computer is fine, and you don't need to buy a new one
Soon available: lots of nice used hardware to run Linux on cheaply.
liotier··on A Visual Guide to Genome Editors
I naïvely expected some sort of IDE, and jokingly thought about compilation spitting out a vial of CRISPR & payload for the desired sequence... The instantaneïty of computer programming has seriously warped our expectations.
liotier··on Start your own Internet Resiliency Club
Mesh networks are the foundation - they are essential to disaster resilience. Then what services to run over them ?

Real time chat: wild unsecure simplicity proven to run anywhere (IRC), bells & whistles with contemporary security (Matrix), some mesh native that almost no one knows ? What about post-disaster onboarding of actual users ?

Store & forward messaging: SMTP & friends may work nicely, but with actually distributed servers - in each local disaster POP. Also needs timeout and retry parameters to keeping stuff in queues practically forever.

Forums: anything better than ol' NNTP ? Other protocols merely adopted intermittent indirect connectivity - NNTP was born in it !

Is anything more sophisticated or more interactive realistic for actual disaster ?

An onboarding kit with clients for each major OS (à la AOL CDROM !) might be handy too, for snearkernet distribution over USB dongles.

liotier··on BorgBackup 2 has no server-side append-only anymore
Those were only about 10 TB - home scale, and over SSH across 2 to 10 ms. I was coming from rdiff-backup, which satisfyingly saturated disk writes, whereas I didn't even understand what bottleneck restic was hitting.
liotier··on Launch HN: Vassar Robotics (YC X25) – $219 robot arm that learns new skills
> Maybe a modular design ?

Pardon my naïve imagination but, would stackable joints work - with same connector as the extremity tooling ? The joint would be a standard piece and more degrees of freedom would just mean stacking additional joints. I suppose this has already thought about...

liotier··on BorgBackup 2 has no server-side append-only anymore
Same here: my selection boiled down to Borg vs. Restic. I started with Restic because my friends used it and, while it was perfectly satisfactory functionally, found it unbearably slow with large backups. Changed to Borg and I've been happy everafter !
liotier··on KDE for Windows 10 Exiles – Upgrade your software, not your computer
My 87 years-old dad has no idea what OS he runs and migrating a laptop to KDE gave him a stable system with none of the confusing commercial offers, uncontrolled upgrades and forced account creations.
