linehedonist··on Weathering Software Winter (2022)
I don’t think such a middle ground is really realistic. There are plenty of apps that are just thin wrappers around their backend calls and are no more capable of working offline than I am of going without food or water. But if a program is capable of being fully functional offline for 30 days, then what does it really need to call home for, other than as a confirmation of payment?
linehedonist··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
I live in Westchester County NY, quite possibly the living breathing heart of Reform Judaism in the US (outside the UES anyway). Plenty of genuine supporters of Israel here, even among the Gentiles. I try hard to avoid the topic even with friends. I don’t really want to hear a defense or denial of genocide.
linehedonist··on From engineer to manager: A practical guide to your first months in leadership
The nature of a 'teaching professor' job can vary a lot, but the positions are often very precarious and unstable, as I can attest from personal experience.
linehedonist··on Trans-Taiga Road (2004)
Note that all this information is 20 years old and is badly outdated. Many of the facilities mentioned (eg the Nouchimi Outfitters gas station) no longer exist. https://www.facebook.com/TabascoADV/photos/a.696618650541057...
linehedonist··on Landlines are dying out. But to some, they're a lifeline
Woodside, Malibu, lots of places.
linehedonist··on Landlines are dying out. But to some, they're a lifeline
You’re not throwaway8526! … or are you?

Admittedly Atherton is like the very definition of a top 1% part of CA

linehedonist··on Landlines are dying out. But to some, they're a lifeline
What’s a “top 1% part of California”?
linehedonist··on Boston built a ton of lab buildings. Now many are empty
Somebody in real life was just saying something similar about Boston’s appeal as a mini nyc. I was genuinely pretty surprised — I think of Boston as pretty different from New York (much, much smaller, lots whiter, more educated; in my head Chicago or even Philly are closer to nyc-lite), but I can imagine a bunch of new englanders do move to Boston to get an urban experience.
linehedonist··on New Aztec Codices Discovered: The Codices of San Andrés Tetepilco
Sure, underlying conditions were different and partially explain the different colonizing strategies. Doesn’t change the fact that there were key differences that manifest themselves in evidence like these newly discovered codices.
linehedonist··on New Aztec Codices Discovered: The Codices of San Andrés Tetepilco
Yeah Spanish colonialism was very different from English colonialism. The Spanish attempted to coopt and convert the local population, not displace and kill them. That’s not to say it wasn’t a nasty process but to this day there are millions of people in Mexico who speak Nahuatl (the Aztec language) as their first and primary language.
linehedonist··on If You Don't Change the UI, Nobody Notices (2009)
I really like the new IntelliJ UI. It’s a blatant rip-off of VS Code but I like VS code so I’m fine with it. Removes a bunch of lesser-used features from the main view and feels a lot cleaner.

linehedonist··on The Reddits
Reddit has had a lot of trouble with revenue, as I understand it. Not an inspiring field to move into.
linehedonist··on The Reddits
Though presumably he can have both sincere and cynical motivations for such blog posts.
linehedonist··on The Reddits
Definitely
linehedonist··on The Reddits
Plastic, Metafilter, memepool, others too I’m sure.
linehedonist··on Paris preserves its mixed society by pouring billions into public housing
That number seems impossible on its face. Healthcare spending presumably consists of salaries and overhead, and I can’t imagine overhead is 92% of all spending.
linehedonist··on Study: Dark matter does not exist and the universe is 27B years old
It’s too bad the piece doesn’t have any reactions from other physicists. Is this a pretty speculative idea in the field or closer to the mainstream?
linehedonist··on Airbnb is banning indoor security cameras
You empty the trash from your hotel room? Really?

linehedonist··on The Suicide PhD Candidate Huixiang Chen (2019)
Academia is a club of purportedly professional peers, with a strong social norm of supporting one another. If you bring a lawsuit against your advisor you might be able to get them fired, but you will kiss any chance of a career goodbye.

That said, I’d be curious to know of any examples of students bringing lawsuits against their advisors, and what the legal and professional outcomes were for student and advisor.

linehedonist··on The Suicide PhD Candidate Huixiang Chen (2019)
I think this is bad advice. Bringing a lawyer to the academy is a fundamentally adversarial move, and barring exceptional circumstances will not go well (some female academics denied tenure in the 80s did do well from lawsuits on gender discrimination grounds).
linehedonist··on The Suicide PhD Candidate Huixiang Chen (2019)
Doesn’t matter. He resigned in disgrace, will never work in academia again. Honestly I’m now curious what he’s been up to the last two years.
linehedonist··on Uber must pay wheelchair user $35,000, provide accessible rides
Cost is way too high. A few taxis and drivers won’t cut it.
linehedonist··on More doctors are charging fees to respond to patient messages
Pretty dismissive of your wife’s patients. To your “welcome to parenthood” I might reply “welcome to being a pediatrician.”
linehedonist··on New 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 chip
My glorious employer doesn’t pay for the Office suite, so I occasionally use Numbers for some very lightweight spreadsheet work on the work laptop.
linehedonist··on New 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 chip
Americans really do not have to go back and forth with metric a lot. Life in the glorious USA is lived unapologetically in imperial units.
linehedonist··on Ask HN: How can I learn about performance optimization?
