limomium··on Is Dark Mode Such a Good Idea?
My environment isn't "badly lit". I just don't want bright, flickering light blasted into my eyes at my expense.

I even block natural light using sunglasses when I go outside!

Once upon a time I stared at the Sun for a solid 20 seconds without blinking. I couldn't read text for a month, the letters disappeared from under my center vision. Why in God's name would I want to routinely stare at a bright screen?

limomium··on Is Dark Mode Such a Good Idea?
Here's an aspect of this I never see mentioned: DARK MODE SAVES BATTERY on mobile devices.

The screen uses energy to emit light. The less light it has to emit, the less energy it needs. The longer your battery lasts.

limomium··on Starting Many Things
All the unfinished work begins to come together as a coherent whole, at some point. Concepts join, ideas merge, good parts stay and not so good parts fall off. Everything you've ever started is leading up to something. It'll come. You can't see it yet because it's something new. Something magnificent. Something worth all that effort. And when it does come, you will know. You will feel. And you will regret nothing.
limomium··on Avoiding the Global Lobotomy
I disagree - that just leads to learning to distract oneself. The most effective method in my experience is to do nothing instead of the thing you want to stop doing. Literally, stop the thing you're doing, do not transition into doing anything else, and then do nothing. For a good while. Give it an hour or two.

This is based on the theory that the REASON you keep checking your phone, HN, etc. is that you are compulsively anxious about "missing out" on information, so your brain seeks it at every opportunity, and the Internet and its services have an unending supply. The antidote is to PROVE to yourself that the compulsion is illusory, and nothing bad happens if you resist it.

Over time, you can extend the time between these checks longer and longer, and begin to notice that it's OK to miss even MOST online content, really only occasionally and with INTENT stop to consume the stuff you ACTUALLY care about. Unfriend Facebook contacts that have nothing real to say. Unsubscribe from everything that doesn't truly interest you. Set your phone on 'Do Not Disturb' outside business hours.

YOU decide what content and when you want to consume. Never browse feeds nor recommendation engines. They are intentionally tuned to be as addictive as possible, to keep you hooked, to serve you more ads.

limomium··on Stop Taking Regular Notes; Use a Zettelkasten Instead
I will most certainly not hand something as vital to me as my notes to some unrealiable cloud provider that advertises "no commitments" and provides no guarantees for persistence!

A colleague fell for this kind of thing and lost everything when the service went bust.

limomium··on Doordash and Pizza Arbitrage
How about public transport? It makes a substantial difference that I can pull up the route suggestion and station timetable from my pocket always-on always-connected supercomputer to know to the minute when I need to start tieing my shoes to get where I'm going. You're basically arguing that adding telepathic conscioussness to a service provides less than zero value.
limomium··on We are not mostly empty space
That's also the difference between raster and vector modeling of virtual geometry. There is an area on a graph where one literally takes less space on a computer's memory than the other, for representing essentially the same information.

But there are other trade-offs.

limomium··on 4D Toys: how objects bounce and roll in 4D – paper accepted to SIGGRAPH 2020
So what about subatomic particle scale? Would it look like particles spontaneously appearing and disappearing? Quantum tunneling through obstacles? (they actually went around in another dimension)
limomium··on The Quiet Revolution of Animal Crossing
Actually your simple reduction doesn't hold, which is the very reason I stopped playing Animal Crossing: If you perform NO input, the game STILL responds. i.e. If you don't play, the game still simulates its world. Weeds grow, town inhabitants move out, etc.

It's basically an addiction-based dark pattern. The game punishes you for not playing. I play games on MY TIME, and I won't make myself slave to one.

limomium··on Why Sex? Biologists Find New Explanations
Why would you evolve the necessary organs to sexually reproduce with your self, with no one else around?
limomium··on A Genealogy of the Idea of Universal Basic Income
Far too low for what, exactly? Buying real estate, cars, expensive clothing, huge TVs and investments?

If you suddenly lose a well-paying job, food and housing still cost the same for everyone, which you can afford on UBI, by design.

You'll have to give up the expensive lifestyle afforded by the lost job, of course. Maybe move to cheaper housing. So what?

limomium··on A Genealogy of the Idea of Universal Basic Income
Yes. And the "universal" part makes it UNCONDITIONAL on receive, which is the important part. It removes the necessity for a government institution to decide per individual how much they are eligible for. Much money is saved. Since the government already has an institution for checking taxes, the conditionality is merely moved to the end - they check not whether you get UBI, but just how much taxes you owe.
limomium··on Coronavirus-afflicted global economy is almost certainly in recession
Eh? People will harvest food to not starve. You don't even have to pay them.
limomium··on E Ink smart screen puts a newspaper on your wall
Well, I don't know. A decent tablet goes for $300. I could see myself paying +33% for significantly increased battery life. On mobile devices, the screen eats most of the battery charge, therefore also contributing most to the battery's degredation over years. An e-ink tablet could potentially last much longer.
limomium··on Industry spent millions selling recycling, to sell more plastic
There would also be less food waste if the stores just, you know, gave away the products about to spoil to people who, you know, aren't rich enough to be picky about their bananas.
limomium··on Industry spent millions selling recycling, to sell more plastic
The funny thing is, aluminum is even more toxic than plastic is, so they fix one mistake with another :)
limomium··on U.S. retailers plan to stop paying rent to offset virus closures
Not sure about US, but in EU citizen accounts are insured up to EUR 100k. So it doesn't matter if banks fail.
limomium··on GTA V – The Wormy Fountain
Your water simulation example isn't impressive. It doesn't splash nor wave. It's just a simple rippling, refracting surface.
limomium··on The American Frontier Continues to Shape Us (2018)

limomium··on Explaining copyright broke the YouTube copyright system
But we are not talking about the DMCA system. We are talking about YouTube's own system that is not DMCA and for which they are not required to provide due process.

limomium··on Samsung accidentally sends 'Find My Mobile' notifications to Galaxy phones
A Nokia with Android One certainly has less bloatware than most cheap phones, but you WILL still get pestered by Google Assistant incessantly. There's no way to turn it off. No matter how many settings you disable, it will always pop up when it thinks you've said 'ok google', and sometimes sporadically.
limomium··on Spore Prototypes (2008)
I've long wanted a whole game around that. Proper procedural stuff floating around.
limomium··on EU: Call to introduce common charger for all mobile phones
How do old devices without Internet connection recognize new IDs registered after their manufacture?

Clearly, there's no ID, but rather some kind of protocol for negotiating voltage levels.

limomium··on A game theorist breaks down the effects of inequality
Spending anything on anything you don't really need is irrational by definition!
limomium··on A game theorist breaks down the effects of inequality
Aren't you describing a dictatorship? In communism, the state owns things, but the state can be the people; i.e. democratic communism. Isn't communism just the absence of private property? (that is, everything is public property)
limomium··on How to Get Vaccinated Without Parental Consent
Every major outbreak that the news media exploded about in the past decades - bird flu, swine flu, etc. Every one I got, had a little fever for a few days, and then continued my life as if nothing happened. So why would I get vaccinated?

One argument in favor that I hear is 'herd immunity'; getting vaccinated to protect those who can't get vaccinated and are otherwise at great risk to their health.
