Automate Your Dating Life with 100 Lines of Python

This is the most Hackernews post title I've ever seen.

I bet this guy is still single.

This is good as a technical exercise, but poor as an actual solution to a problem.

Matching with potential partners is about showing interest.

If you're matching with many people, you likely won't be able to divide all your time between them at once.

If you're matching with people and not messaging them, it's similar to blowing them off or not showing enough interest.

This will have a negative impact on your dating life.

For anyone looking for love, I would recommend quality over quantity.

Just my 2 cents, and based on nothing more than my own experiences.

When tinder had a webapp, not sure if they still have it, I've made a Chrome extension to swipe right.

I used to leave my personal laptop on with the thing enabled when I left for work in the morning. Got me plenty of matches, but not that many dates, since you need to engage in conversation very soon after the match, or the lady is going to lose interest.

Don't you get banned if you automatically swipe right everything?

I'm sure they've changed this multiple times. My understanding is they used to basically put you in a 'loser' bracket where you wouldn't get as good of matches (or just get matches with other people doing the same thing). You wouldn't get banned, but you also wouldn't get the best matches.

EDIT: Note this is on Tinder. Don't know if Hinge is any different...

The Hinge API doesn't explicitly track your "desirability" bucket, but JSwipe (Tinder for Jews) does. I was curious how their API compared, and there's a field which records the percentage of users who liked your profile.

After doing this for a week, it does seem like the quality of my suggestions decreased, but they returned to normal if I limited the number of automated swipes.

TL;DR: automating up to ~20 swipes per day is the sweet spot to maintain match quality.

Seems like you could work around that by swiping right at random.

In which case you probably don't care about quality matches and begs the question why are you dating?

Do you really need the answer?

It starts with f..

fear of loneliness?

...for unlawful carnal knowledge.

Hinge in particular isn’t giving me especially good matches anyway. And if I don’t swipe right, it keeps giving me the same people over and over again. I think it might be “designed to be deleted” by being too annoying to use.

They may use Elo (or something similar) for ranking desirability. Swiping randomly would still lower your desirability score in that case.

Tinder used to use the Elo algo (from chess) but apparently they don't use it anymore (I think they prob still use something like this)

Isn't elo pretty bad for subjective/multidimensional matters?

I remember I checked Hinge API a few years ago and the exposed their users last name. Wonder if this has been fixed by now.

Hinge has unlimited swipes...
