limaoscarjuliet··on A faster way to copy SQLite databases between computers
In case someone is looking for a proper way of making db copy in PostgreSQL and not SQLLite, pg_basebackup is the proper way: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/app-pgbasebackup.htm...
limaoscarjuliet··on Japan unveils first solar super-panel
In my experience, no matter how many panels you install, Solar can cover power consumption 30-40% of its max capacity. Winter, night, bad weather will eat the rest. To go beyond the 30-40% you will need energy store or alternative sources.

This is still great but not a 100% solution.

limaoscarjuliet··on How to bike across the country
I did the same, the opposite direction. If you are interested, there is a whole community of people that do this called Crazy Guy on a Bike.

My Trip: https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=1&doc_id=10372&v=2E

limaoscarjuliet··on Pakistan's 22 GW Solar Shock: How a Fragile State Went Full Clean Energy
Also "Battery storage is the next act [...]". There is no way they went "Full Clean Energy" without battery storage.

Sounds more like op-ed piece than actual facts.

limaoscarjuliet··on Wikipedia is struggling with voracious AI bot crawlers
Fair enough!
limaoscarjuliet··on Wikipedia is struggling with voracious AI bot crawlers
BTW, I do not know why you are getting downvoted, this is a real concern that someone needs to tackle one day.
limaoscarjuliet··on Wikipedia is struggling with voracious AI bot crawlers
That was always my feeling - however big Wikipedia is, however many requests it handles, it is not big enough to warrant burning so many millions every year. Alas, I never studied the subject, as overall I feel Wikipedia is good force in the Universe.

So perhaps price comes with the greatness?

limaoscarjuliet··on Excitable cells
With WPW you MUST NOT take beta blockers (AFAIR), it may kill you.

I had just plain vanilla Afib and got ablation 2 years ago - best thing ever, cured instantly.

limaoscarjuliet··on Google to buy Wiz for $32B
It means if you were a shareholder of Wiz, you will have cash in your checking/savings account within few days and you will no longer have the shares.
limaoscarjuliet··on Tianjin robot incident raises alarm over public safety and robotics
So it begins.

(Sorry, could not stop myself :-)

limaoscarjuliet··on Understanding gRPC, OpenAPI and REST and when to use them in API design
There are uses where gRPC shines. Streaming is one of them - you can transparently send a stream of messages in one "connection". For simple CRUD service, REST is more than enough indeed.
limaoscarjuliet··on An autumn bike adventure down the US portion of the Eastern Divide Trail
There is also RAAM, but across the country https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_Across_America
limaoscarjuliet··on Web page annoyances that I don't inflict on you
The bar screws up printing usually.
limaoscarjuliet··on Ask HN: Where to Work After 40?
Up to a point and then you start feeling getting older. I started noticing while approaching 50. I can no longer push as much as I used to. I need to take breaks. Etc.
limaoscarjuliet··on The science of routing print orders
Same thought here. With a lot of production sites this approach makes sense, but with few it does look like overkill.
limaoscarjuliet··on Highest-resolution images ever captured of the sun’s surface
Downloading the big ones is so slow even over a semi-decent connection, it feels like getting certain lowres images in 1995 over a modem :-) What a blast from the past!

limaoscarjuliet··on OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are struggling to build more advanced AI
Scaling laws are not dead. The number of people predicting death of Moore's law doubles every two years.

limaoscarjuliet··on An embarrassingly simple approach to recover unlearned knowledge for LLMs
It's like asking baby to unlearn something "bad" it learned. Pretty much guaranteed the knowledge will be reinforced rather than forgotten.

Whenever I hear about AI craze, I remind myself of the 3D printers craze from 10-15 years ago. "Death blow to factories", "We will print our own cars", "We will print our own food". I imagine LLM AI will follow the same fate - yes, but not really.

limaoscarjuliet··on Bail Bond Insurers Are Lobbying to Keep People in Jail
Can't the charitable groups that post bonds re-work themselves as bail bonds companies? Or work together to create one and work through it?

Yes, the regulation is broken, but perhaps there is a way out...

limaoscarjuliet··on Nearly all of the Google images results for "baby peacock" are AI generated
A lot of comments amount to: "Internet is dead". AI is crap for sure but far from making Internet dead or useless. Consider: - emails, - bills and payments, - banking, - searching for and buying stuff (assuming you already know what you want that is), - calls/chats - whatsapp, messenger, etc. - youtube (for learning), - social stuff - however bad.

AI? This shall pass too. Internet will find its way.

limaoscarjuliet··on Shedding light on alcohol's long shadow
I'm one of the lucky ones that do not tolerate alcohol at all. Give me 2 beers and I will be hangover next day. Congrats on stopping!
limaoscarjuliet··on Show HN: Bringing multithreading to Python's async event loop
You are correct, async-io is cooperative. This seems an attempt to enhance these async-io cooperative threads work more like goroutines in golang. Golang can start threads if it "thinks" the workload needs more CPU.
limaoscarjuliet··on A rigid but foldable indoor airship aerial system for cave exploration
Friend of mine is in business of storing natural gas in salt caverns (https://www.eia.gov/naturalgas/storage/basics/). They do scan these by dropping a sonar in a drilled shaft, but this approach has limitations. Using a moving scanning airship might be helpful.
limaoscarjuliet··on AI agents invade observability: snake oil or the future of SRE?
This paper explains why this is (and likely will be for some time) the case: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10676-024-09775-5
limaoscarjuliet··on Synthetic diamonds are now purer, more beautiful, and cheaper than mined
But but but.... the mined ones have SOUL!

Diamonds are such a racket! Forever!

limaoscarjuliet··on Sqlc: Compile SQL to type-safe code
PostgreSQL lets you write queries straight in C. It is not bad. Definitely easier than straight libpq: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/ecpg.html

Example C code (requires ECPG pre-compilation step):

EXEC SQL BEGIN DECLARE SECTION; int v1; VARCHAR v2; EXEC SQL END DECLARE SECTION;

...

EXEC SQL DECLARE foo CURSOR FOR SELECT a, b FROM test;

...

do { ... EXEC SQL FETCH NEXT FROM foo INTO :v1, :v2; ... } while (...);

limaoscarjuliet··on Deals with the devil aren't what they used to be
Reading the description I immediately knew what will be under the links. Nice reference!
limaoscarjuliet··on Don't rely on IF NOT EXISTS for concurrent index creation in PostgreSQL
Concurrent index creation or re-indexing is not all magic. It does scan the table multiple times and might lead to deadlocks if the table is heavily modified.

Furthermore, failed concurrent index or re-index will leave invalid cursors behind that are not usable but incur the update costs. Of course, they consume the disk space.

Use with caution.

limaoscarjuliet··on Warsaw came close to never being rebuilt (2015)
You mean this one? Nope, still a cluster.

limaoscarjuliet··on At the Mountains of Madness
Been there, done that. In my case, I symlinked myself out of this mess rather than modify ELF.
