likecarter··on Tailscale's new macOS home
I feel like you don’t use tailscale. Because I use it every day - and I get confused when I can’t find it.
likecarter··on AI is killing B2B SaaS
Yes, but the market is punishing the former right now.
likecarter··on P-Hacking in Startups
Author: 5% chance it could be same or worse

Parent: 5% chance it could be same

likecarter··on Apple Investors Already Hate the New iPhone 15
I assume we can all do the arithmetic. In the market, stocks will move based on price increases, since cost inputs are assumed to not move, or rarely move - COVID being an exception to the rule.
likecarter··on Apple Investors Already Hate the New iPhone 15
My sweet summer child. Price increases are margin increasing events.
likecarter··on Microsoft lost its keys, and the government got hacked
Okta has been hacked a couple times now...
likecarter··on The Bitcoin whitepaper is hidden in every copy of macOS
It’s satire.
likecarter··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
The rest of the world doesn’t have elected DA’s.
likecarter··on Block: Inflated user metrics and “frictionless” fraud facilitation
Putting out a low-quality report?
likecarter··on Block: Inflated user metrics and “frictionless” fraud facilitation
It just ruins their reputation as a reliable short-seller. It's short-sighted. They had good reports until now.
likecarter··on Block: Inflated user metrics and “frictionless” fraud facilitation
Wells Fargo took advantage of black people and minorities, I wouldn't call them the criminal demographic. They were also the victims.
likecarter··on Block: Inflated user metrics and “frictionless” fraud facilitation
Did anyone read the report? The summary is quite short. Seems like a nothing-burger.
likecarter··on Bank run on Silicon Valley Bank
Well then customers won't get any interest. And therefore you will have no customers. And therefore no deposits.
likecarter··on $22B project to provide 8% of UK energy via undersea cable from North Africa
On the money. Nuclear is too expensive and fragile, especially in this political environment. Also much more susceptible to sabotage in the event of a war, which is becoming a more relevant reality.
likecarter··on Reliability: It’s not great
Yeah, reading the post made it seem like they followed “best practices” without really thinking things through. KISS.
likecarter··on Climatic and environmental aspects of Mongol withdrawal from Hungary (2016)
Is all of Europe now Western Europe? News to me.
likecarter··on South Korea’s online security dead end
That's why both sides get experts.

Your reasoning is extremely reductive – I can't tell if you're just trying to win an argument here. You could say people will be misleading about anything. Your doctor, the police, the DMV clerk. At some point, you have to recognize you live in a society, and society is built on some level of trust and fairness.

likecarter··on South Korea’s online security dead end
In court, you bring in experts (usually professors from reputable universities) to state best practices. Judges don't act as experts in a trial.
likecarter··on “The more reliant we are on others, the less resilient we are as a nation”
Besides preventing conflict, globalization was supposed to increase democracy in the world. Increasing trade relations with China was in part to make them more democratic, as the theory was the more prosperous a nation is, the more democratic they become. I think we got it backwards.

Now we know it doesn’t work, and this historic reason for globalization is moot.

likecarter··on Problems with disk encryption in AWS
Stealing disks does happen, especially on-premise, which is where these policies originated.

Also, sometimes there are mistakes with decommissioning old drives, and you wouldn’t want your data discovered in a landfill somewhere.

likecarter··on Launch HN: Kalshi (YC W19) – A regulated exchange for trading on events
Ah, I see. That’s unfortunate. 3 years definitely requires a lot of resources.

They’ll have a monopoly for a bit then. Would ‘t be surprised if Robinhood dips their toes in.

likecarter··on Launch HN: Kalshi (YC W19) – A regulated exchange for trading on events
I'm a big user of https://predictit.org/. But they are getting shutdown soon, so this is great.

One thing I'd suggest: add pictures to the events. Makes it much easier for me to navigate and identify markets. I.e. a Biden picture next to a Biden event.

likecarter··on Digging 10 miles underground could yield enough geothermal energy to power Earth
We have plenty of active volcanoes and the earth doesn’t freeze. The earth is very big.
likecarter··on Twitter in chaos as employees accept Musk’s invitation to quit their jobs
This tells me you’ve never worked 80 hour weeks.
likecarter··on Can a universal basic income help address homelessness?
I agree - the problem is varied, and the solution needs to be nuanced.
likecarter··on Sequoia on SBF: A Future Trillionaire
Even funnier is that Sam is Bronze 2 in LOL. (Very low for those that don't play LOL).
likecarter··on FTX faces potential hack, sees mysterious outflows totaling more than $600M
Crypto is life-changing in the sense that you will probably lose all your money as (1) a complete speculation or (2) in a hack or (3) due to fraud.
likecarter··on Eli Lilly stock fell by $20B because of a fake tweet about free insulin
No, it's because our government negotiates on behalf of all Canadians. And we are a very big healthcare market (even with a small population) since we all participate in the health care system – since it's public.
likecarter··on Snapchat for Web
Chromium is open source and is adopted by Microsoft via Edge. So if Google stops working on it, I'm sure MS will take up development. I think one standard is better for developers, but maybe not for diversity.
likecarter··on Sri Lanka is having a textbook currency crisis, triggered by policy mistakes
Even then, not a good idea for them, hence very few rich countries do it (unless they are very small).

Controlling interest rates is incredibly important, especially in times of crisis. If you were pegged to the USD right now (which is skyrocketing relative to most other currencies), you would be in trouble.
