lightbulbjim··on A visual comparison of macOS Catalina and Big Sur
I agree with the idea that the content should be emphasised. Unfortunately the extreme UI padding goes in the opposite direction for me.

The fat toolbar in Safari is a good example. I care about the web content but now I have to give up part of my window real estate to the meta concern of the browser controls.

This used to bug me about Gnome 3 and it's sad to see macOS heading in the same direction.

Active cooling.
lightbulbjim··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
Yeah, you kinda have to drink the whole koolaid before it clicks. It’s great when it does though.

It only clicked for me when I started using NixOS (on my primary laptop in my case) rather than just Nix.

> "Proper" makes sense until it doesn't.

Yeah, sometimes it helps to learn the rules before breaking them.

lightbulbjim··on On Liberating My Smartwatch from Cloud Services
Cool, but you could also just use software such as GoldenCheetah or rubiTrack.
lightbulbjim··on On Liberating My Smartwatch from Cloud Services
You might like GoldenCheetah.
lightbulbjim··on Wireless Is a Trap
You might be able to get around this by using the laptop microphone instead of the one on the AirPods. Option + click the volume icon in the menubar during a call and choose the MacBook microphone. Audio should switch to A2DP and sound much better.

This works for me on two different bluetooth headsets, but I've never tried AirPods so YMMV.

lightbulbjim··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Hmm. If this had a ~14" display in roughly the current chassis size then it would be an instant buy for me. Now I'm not sure - is the 14" still happening? Or should I go for this one?
lightbulbjim··on If a MacBook Pro runs hot or shows high kernel CPU, try charging it on the right
Aluminium is a much better heat conductor than steel.
lightbulbjim··on DisplayPort and 4K
Yeah, maybe it's the OS version. I'm running Catalina and I see the scaling options from that screenshot for my external non-Apple monitor.
lightbulbjim··on DisplayPort and 4K
Not true. I get the same scaling options on my 4K monitor as I do on my Retina display.
lightbulbjim··on iOS 13's Music App Sucks
Try foobar2000 on iOS. It should do what you’re after.
lightbulbjim··on Local Linux User Tries FreeBSD
I would say it's more slanted towards desktop use than server use.

Generally you want to automate server management with some sort of config management. While possible with Slackware, it's easier with a Debian or Red Hat style system.

For a desktop Slackware is pretty nice. It's easy to understand and gets out of your way. I used it for over a decade until, one day, I realised I was tired of recompiling slackbuilds after each low level dependency upgrade.

Give OpenRCT2 a try.
lightbulbjim··on From Mac to Linux – the setup I've grown to love
Gnome has an “enable Emacs key bindings” option which will enable readline shortcuts. Can’t remember whether it’s in settings or the tweak tool.
lightbulbjim··on From Mac to Linux – the setup I've grown to love
Isn’t Ctrl+UpArrow the default Mission Control shortcut?

I too prefer the MacOS copy/paste shortcuts, but I find that MacOS and Mac apps mix up Ctrl/Cmd just like other systems.

lightbulbjim··on Microsoft explains the lack of Registry backups in Windows 10

lightbulbjim··on Mac Pro: Fooled You
Nah.

My 13" MacBook Pro is 13.3" at 2560x1600 or 227 PPI.

My 24" 4K monitor is 24" at 3840x2160 or 184 PPI.

Your 32" 4K monitor is 138 PPI, so only 60% of the density of MacBook displays.

lightbulbjim··on A Tiling Desktop Environment
This echoes my experience. After over a decade of dwm I switched to Gnome a few months ago and can’t see myself going back. I love the performance and window management aspects of dwm but I really like the cohesive desktop I get with Gnome.
lightbulbjim··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
I much prefer the touchpad. It's so nice being able to click the top part easily.

lightbulbjim··on TomTom ditches map updates for some sat-navs
Yeah, I'm not sure why it's such a common complaint that phone service is required for navigation. There are plenty of apps available which let you download whole countries/regions for very cheap, and can do all of their routing offline.
