liendolucas··on Reflections on 1,000 Days of Math
I think the question to be asked about this post should be: "How many things can you solve by yourself outside the platform you are currently using?".

I have the feeling (though I could be wrong) that you might very well sort out the exercises and problems that are presented in the platform, but what about tackling for example Project Euler? How far can you go with the knowledge that you acquired from this platform after 3 years of daily usage?

Please note that I'm not trying to diminish the value of the mentioned platform but I believe that tackling problems that force you to hit your head on the wall and/or figuring out things by yourself with maybe some books, makes you learn in a completely different and richer way.

liendolucas··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
This is the most accurate definition of Samsung products I ever read.
liendolucas··on I said no and Apple said yes
I don't know what you consider "actually new" hardware. The machine I use to work has 16 Gb of RAM. Ryzen 7 and an AMD GPU. For me that's a pretty decent and recent hardware.

If you meant the lastest of the latest GPU, processor, chipset and so you you might better off with Linux.

But the fact that the computer that was given to me was boxed from factory and bought after two weeks after started is a sign of recent hardware. I haven't tried it but two other person where I work have high end brand new ThinkPads and I'm confident FreeBSD can be run on those well too.

liendolucas··on I said no and Apple said yes
Of course it works and is beautiful hardware and all that.

But don't fool yourself. You're subverted to Apple's rules the same as Microsoft users are to Windows.

I prefer to fight a little bit on an update on a unix system on something that is not working 100% to give up choices. When you use Windows, MacOS, Android you do not have choices. Choices are dictated from above, like it or not.

As for me every time I have to interact with something that is not BSD or Linux I suffer miserably.

liendolucas··on I said no and Apple said yes
Running FreeBSD on a Lenovo Thinkbook 16 G7 ARP that was bought brand new less than a year ago. Everything except the wifi works flawlessly (daily driver for working).

And the wifi is easily fixable either buying a non expensive dongle or waiting for the next release.

Also running bhyve as daily driver with Ubuntu for development purposes. Everything works without issues, perfectly.

liendolucas··on I said no and Apple said yes
FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD are your friends too!
liendolucas··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
Why not just paint the original chips with some special ink that says VOID IF TAMPERED over the RAM chips and the board? Pretty much like other hardware manufacturers do with seals or stickers, wouldn't this solve the issue?
liendolucas··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Can someone explain why is this important or relevant and is not just Altman once again trying to get people "impressed"?

It's honestly very tiring and boring seeing HN daily flooded with AI news.

liendolucas··on I set a trap for a book-marketing scammer (2025)
> Authors are desperate because books aren’t selling, traditional marketing isn’t working, and publishers are offering less support per title. We’re feeling pretty helpless about our career trajectories, watching sales numbers decline while wondering what we’re doing wrong.

What's wrong? There's nothing wrong. Just people addicted to FaceBook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Netflix, YouTube, etc.

liendolucas··on A Friendly Introduction to Racket
I think you clearly exposed one of the things that I couldn't never describe why I wasn't dragged into Racket/scheme. It's not only annoying is hard to remember all these differences.

Obviously the more you use the language these go away but still at least to me it doesn't seem to be a coherent syntax.

liendolucas··on The Art and Beauty of Blade Runner (2015)
Of the sci-fi genre for me it will always be #1. The whole thing is just perfect, there's no other movie that comes close to the world that is envisioned in Blade Runner.
liendolucas··on Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for scraping, while Meta does it without consequence
One of the reasons big companies still get away on things like these is because fines are pocket change to them and top level executives ever face a real prison sentence at all.

They have already done the legal work and the math in advance, and because the numbers are on their side they get away with it.

Is as simple as that.

liendolucas··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
HE wants to get rid of forms, and make the rest of the world enjoy the burden of requesting access to open source code through a beloved form. Hope that's clear now.
liendolucas··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
Don't be evil, right?

This is how a multibillion company that benefited infinitely from open source pays back.

liendolucas··on I used to be excited about new tech, but I rarely am anymore
The last technology that truly excited me was the ebook. I truly believe is one of the greatest gadgets ever invented. It's just fantastic the disconnection you get with it, the quality of the screen, how long battery lasts and obviously how many books you can carry in a small package.
liendolucas··on The Amazon tax
Offtopic: Amazon has removed the option to not store your credit card details when checking out items. There used to be a checkbox that allowed you to choose not to save your credit card details for future purchases.

It's gone and confirmed and acknowledged by their support which made me take a screenshot of the popup where the card details are entered to confirm it. They in turned wanted to give me a 15€ gift card for the inconvenience and told them that I wasn't there asking for a gift card or discount and refused it.

So every single time you purchase with your credit card if you do not want your details to be saved, you have to MANUALLY go to your personal settings and remove the added card from your last purchase. Fucking amazing.

On top of that listings are overflowed with chinese brands and/or items that have no correlation to what I'm looking for.

Can someone suggest better alternatives here in Europe?

liendolucas··on Incident with Github.com
There is no single product Microsoft hasn't touched and ruined. People should leave all Microsoft products en masse. I'm glad I'm no longer on Github.

What I find a bit weird is why so many people rely on it. Today we have tons of VPS providers where anyone can host their on git repo and CI/CD pipeline.

What is preventing so many people to effectively have a custom setup?

liendolucas··on The Mysterious Syndrome Destroying Endurance Athletes
Interestingly the same that can happen to the mind. I can't recall the source of the article but it mentioned a mathematician working so hard on a problem for a long time that at some point he could no longer use his brain power to continue doing moderately difficult level math.

I don't particularly find surprising that someone pushing so hard can end up this way, we aren't limitless in our abilities after all.

liendolucas··on The AI Situation in Software Development
Are you being forced to use AI? I'm not.

But if the person that is above me forces me to use the latest craze tool to do *my* job then that is no longer a place for me to stay.

liendolucas··on The AI Situation in Software Development
And yes, there is also another sane and rewarding option: write everything just by youserlf without any assistance. Let's not forget about that one, shall we?
liendolucas··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
I have witnessed first hand this and must say is a disaster, the person that came up with a fix to an issue that I didn't understand tried everything to convince me that the automated fix works.

Indeed the fix did work, but when I asked him to explain me the problem and the fix he started to use the prompt to get answers.

At that point I just let it go, the only thing that I mentioned later on is that I'm ok with pushing that to prod if that was ordered to me but I'm not responsible for it.

I prefer to keep the bug live until I fully understand the problem, reproduce it, come up with a solution and maybe just maybe perform a check against what a computer generated.

Please note that the bug came from a real human code base but being complex and not familiar with that part of the code (moreover the code was handed to us without any type of support/documentation) rendered me in a weak position where I couldn't come up with a solution so far.

How can someone trust so much a computer generated hotfix without fully understanding a problem is what still baffles me.

Still resisting to use any aided coding, no LLM is not going to steal the capacity to use my brain. The day I'm forced to used these tools, the day I quit.

liendolucas··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
> it will kill them in the long run...

Now, that's something I would love to see in my lifetime.

liendolucas··on LinkedIn CringeBot 3000
LinkedIn content is trash to be honest. If I were to put effort into a good post I would ever write it there, no matter how many eyeballs could I attract. The post could be good, but because I have been fed trash on LinkedIn for such a long time, I wouldn't spend a second trying to figure out if what someone wrote is worth reading.

At least for me HN provides me with high quality posts, hence me coming back here for new sources of information. Not saying that all posts on HN are top quality but most of the time the situation is exactly the opposite to LinkedIn. So there's a lot of value to build up your own thing and put work on it.

liendolucas··on LinkedIn CringeBot 3000
Why are you putting content on such platforms? Honestly.

Do you realize that you are giving content for free to an already enshittified and closed platform?

Open a blog where everyone can read freely without to have an account in one of the worst platforms out there.

Or is it to be popular that you post there?

liendolucas··on Worms: The Future of Yesterday's Worms Today
My journey was: gorilla.bas -> scorched earth -> worms armageddon -> worms world party. Endless hours playing with my siblings.

The best matches were the ones that we only allowed grenades, bazookas, mortars and other few basic short range weapons.

liendolucas··on Europe's fires are just the start
I'm a firm believer that sooner or later we will be extinct by extreme heat and suffocation.

Two weeks ago here in Umbria, Italy the heat was extreme. It was 40°C without a breeze of air, it literally felt like braathing hot air. One morning while I was walking I couldn't believe the amount of dry leaves on the street, by pictures people would have guessed that it was autumn.

I have a really good tolerance to high temperatures but this time I got home very dizzy.

Hope is not too late to revert the current situation, but realistically year after year temperatures have been raising steadly.

liendolucas··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
No. Books are not to be massacred that way, if you need take notes you can still write that down on a piece of paper and leave in the relevant page inside the book. If you need to write that much have a notebook and put your book notes there, no need to destroy a book.
liendolucas··on Building a real-time AI tutor for 5-year-olds
What on earth are you talking about???

I didn't get a single coherent idea from any sentence/paragraph.

Shame on me? Shame on you for not being concise, synthetic and to the point.

liendolucas··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
I don't really get it. High profile people working for Apple leave for OpenAI, obviously for money. Is it worth it though? You already have a good job, enough money and work for an iconic company.

I mean people in these positions taking these decisions, wouldn't have actually benefited way much more if staying at Apple and actually disclosed OpenAI attempts to steal IP and technology?
