lgsilver··on Ask HN: Is it necessary to be a CS major be successful in the tech sector?
You don't need a CS degree to be successful but it'll be a lot easier to get in the door.

Most top-tier tech companies (google, fb, twitter, etc.) won't even interview a non-cs candidate for an engineering or product role unless they have incredible (like, you built instagram) evidence of their talent.

It's also a lot harder to skip the degree and still learn what you need. I did, and it's taken me 10+ years of constant curiosity (and tons of nights and weekends) to be on par with my peers who have degrees.

That all said. You gain other skills with a liberal arts or science degree that CS majors don't get. I'm a much better communicator and manager than many of my engineering colleagues, and that has allowed me to outpace them in terms of career growth.

Seriously? the information isn't that personal if it's publicly listed on AirBnB...
lgsilver··on Story Worth – privately collect and share family stories
I've used StoryWorth. It's a great service and definitely not a social network. Your family members respond to questions via email with stories and the service stores them. Then they're safely stored. Great for older family members who don't really understand anything besides email.
lgsilver··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2014)

lgsilver··on Ask HN: My 56-year-old father is a developer having a tough time finding a job
Luis, We're recruiting for mongo experts—and happen to use django too for other parts of our system. We're an early stage co based in SF & NYC. -- Lindsay (lindsay (at) socialight.io)
lgsilver··on Picture Pitcher – Making Your Pictures Greater Than Greater
Great work on this. I've been looking for a way to add more pictures to my pictures for a while now, and this is awesome. A couple thoughts.

1.) Would it be possible to lessen the picturfication of pictures? I've found that some of my pictures are overly exciting, and I'd really like to remove the energy and interestingness in them 2.) You mention a mini fridge in your video. It might be a worthwhile to consider purchasing an extremely cheap full-sized fridge instead. It'll hold more PBR's and can be used to store magazines when unplugged 3.) Will the wolves and sombreros used in the pictures be native / culturally appropriate to the habitat in which they're depicted? I'm concerned that my pictures might display wolves and sombreros that don't accurately represent their cultural heritage or ecological surroundings.

You've probably already answered these in an FAQ somewhere. Just thought I'd ask.

lgsilver··on Ask HN: Does anybody actually use MongoDB anymore?
We use it for transient data caching and adhoc analysis. In combination with good indexing it's relatively fast for our queries.

Hey Marcus, Not yet, but we're adding FB pages (and other platforms, now). Send me an email (lindsay@socialight.io) and I'll let you know when we add them. Should be in the next few days. -- Lindsay

Hi Stronglikedan, not for the current version, but there will be in the coming days. In the mean time, I'd be happy to send you screen shots if you'd like, just send me an email: lindsay@socialight.io.
lgsilver··on Show HN: Socialight.io, Google Analytics for social media
Great question. We've actually built an exports/reporting api, but need to make sure it clears the platforms' TOS. We'll make it available as soon as possible! And, Thanks for checking it out :).
lgsilver··on Ask HN: How much should a bootstrapped startup ask for an acquihire?
You'll be hard-pressed to find an acquiring company that would be willing to pay $1-1.5m / engineer for a bootstrapped co :). But sure.
lgsilver··on Ask HN: How much should a bootstrapped startup ask for an acquihire?
Though I think this is a good response, the first part is not correct. The point of an acqui-hire is to acquire talent at an amount that rewards the team for their previous efforts. In a true acqui-hire the acquirer values the product at $0.

No investor would accept less than their principle back, and so an venture-funded acqui-hire is always going to take into account previous rounds of investments.

All this said, a $10m acquisition of a vc-funded co with 10 employees will probably include at least 25%-30% return to investors depending on preference, or else they won't accept.

I would expect to see a 1/3 to 1/2 price discount on a bootstrapped startup, or even more depending on how short a time you've been working on the product.

lgsilver··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2014)
Chute (YC12) is hiring!

lgsilver··on Show HN: Angles.js - Chart.js charts in Angular
Erik, Awesome. I used Chart.js because it's come up a lot lately and is well documented, but Flot and the other more mature chart libs are probably better for most charting projects (read, allow dynamic data updates). Will try your wrapper today. - Lindsay
lgsilver··on Show HN: Angles.js - Chart.js charts in Angular
Awesome. I just whipped it up today to help with some dashboards at work. Will probably make it more full-featured. Let me know if you have suggestions.
lgsilver··on Ask HN: Is Facebook secretly keeping accounts open?
FB's data structures are hugely messy and decentralized. There's so much information that even FB can't reliably delete all of it for an individual user. Instead, they erase or hash the IDs that represent you in the system, insuring that the links between your data and the front-end are broken.

The jobs that do this are scheduled, and every time you log in you create new IDs and nodes in the cache, which means they have to rerun the processes that erase the data. The delays are probably related to that.

lgsilver··on Show HN: My seven minute workout timer evening project
Hi everyone. I made some updates today based on your awesome feedback:

1.) You can now change the length of the workout 2.) Sounds now work (as well as they can) in IOS 3.) Changed duration of the breaks to 10 seconds no matter how long the workout 4.) Added a sound-effect to tell you to switch on exercises that need it 5.) Made some UI tweaks to improve the look

Thanks for making my week.

lgsilver··on Show HN: My seven minute workout timer evening project
Thanks again to everyone. I'm going to keep the webapp completely open and free as long as anyone is using it, and I'll definitely open up the code once I clean it a bit. If anyone would like to port it to IOS, I'd be happy to chat. lgsilver (at) gmail.com -- Lindsay

You guys rock. Thanks for the comments. Setting workout lengths is actually already built-in, just have to add it to the UI (after work).
lgsilver··on LayerVault Sends DMCA Takedown Letter re Flat-UI
Who are LayerVault's lawyers? Seems like bad legal advice to me...
lgsilver··on YC W13 Applicants
If your company description is, "we're the (insert startup name one) for (insert startup name two)", please please reconsider. There are sooo many cool business ideas that don't involve Facebook, twitter, or (inset startup name three's idea here) ideas.
lgsilver··on Ask HN: $3000 to incorporate. Is it a good deal?
A lot of the value of incorporating is "getting to know" your legal team. Wilson Sonsini in SV and SF will often defer or waive fees for a very small chunk of equity on ideas that they like, and other legal teams are open to similar arrangements.

The benefit of extending your network is huge here. A good legal team can be a gateway to capital, while a missfiled c-corp can scare away investors.

Aside from the oft-repeated, "don't do it until you absolutely have to", I would suggest that you to do some research on law firms that are specifically working with startups in your industry and area.

You may be surprised that many will set up your c-corp for just the cost of fees if they believe that your idea and future with them is strong.

lgsilver··on Ask HN: Using Technical Recruiters to Hire Engineers
Calbear, Thanks. This article was awesome! Elaine had great ideas about hiring at the start, and her (or her fictitious dev's) experiences are exactly in line with my own. Just hoped that maybe there was something else besides LinkedIn out there...
lgsilver··on Ask HN: Using Technical Recruiters to Hire Engineers
Yeah, that's the feeling I've gotten. There seem to be a group of recruiters, and a group of serial contractors, that cycle around SV. In this market, it's almost just a matter of manpower and positive outreach. I guess that's what dev advocates are...
lgsilver··on Ask HN: Using Technical Recruiters to Hire Engineers
Mchannon, really great advice. Thanks. We've looked at this as an option, especially for longer-term hires. Any recs on strong undersung CS programs?
