lgkk··on ELI5: What, really, is an NFT?
At the risk of downvotes… and you did say ELI5…

An NFT is a scam. Designed to extract money from gullible and uninformed people’s pockets.

It was designed to be like a digital pass that entitles you as the owner of a digital asset. It could be something as simple as “oh that’s cool let me right click and save image as” or “only someone with this NFT can access this website that leads to a discord server where all the scammers I mean cool kids hang out”

lgkk··on Japan's 18-year-olds at record-low 1.06 million
I agree with Tucker Carlson from what he said on all in podcast about Japan.

Yes the population decline is alarming but does slowing growth really matter when you have a strong culture?

I don’t believe the solution to their problem is importing random people who share nothing in common with their culture.

The Japanese should be able to maintain their culture and I am sure they will bounce back. They owe it to nobody to radically change their culture to appease some number crunchers.

And I say this as an immigrant to US. I’ve been to Japan and it’s just quite amazing.

lgkk··on Asking your customers what they want doesn't work
I meant the part about the 99% failure.

Every failed entrepreneurs I’ve met fit this category. They try to find validation, but it never works out that way. At least from what I have seen.

lgkk··on Asking your customers what they want doesn't work
From experience customers never know what they want.

There is a reason you, as an entrepreneur, are passionate about building something that’s hopefully better at solving the problem.

I really hate the advice of don’t build something before validating. That has literally never worked for me. That’s like asking a leading question and shooting yourself in the foot at the same time.

You should have some conviction why you’re doing something. Don’t one of those people who tries to do something in an industry they have zero clue about (99% chance of failure). If you know what you’re doing you should have a 60% plus chance of success.

It’s so easy to sell something that people just get at first glance because it’s actually good at solving their problem, because you had faced that same problem and decided to do something about it.

On mobile, iOS specifically in safari, your drop downs are hard to use. I’m not able to dismiss the keyboard. Is that an issue on my end?

lgkk··on What are farm animals thinking?
It’s not allegedly it’s true at factory farms.

Pulverized at birth.

And no that’s not a brutal death metal song name it’s real life.

lgkk··on What are farm animals thinking?
I’m against industrial farming because of the horrific conditions.

Also stuff drinking the milk of another animal, something that’s reserved for its child, is kind of horrible. All those cows are lined up and pumped and then what? Probably killed. At least to me it is fuckin brutal.

The only thing you can legitimately call me out on is that I don’t go to the doctor or engage much in modern medicine. Seeing monkeys with their brains exposed or puppies and cats suffering “for science” is also wack to me. When it’s my time I’ll go. Hopefully not too much pain.

lgkk··on All I want for Christmas is 1TW of solar deployed annually
Honestly and I’m sure I’ll get some flack for this.

I’m not so sure we need to be that alarmed. First of all, I’m all about renewable energy I don’t like burning fossil fuels. I think planes and gas cars and cargo ships are awful emitters of nasty gases.

However, we can’t even accurately model the global weather system. We keep changing the scientific definitions every decade. Off topic but first the universe was 13b years now it’s way more. Or this kind of fat is bad but flip flop some time later that it is good. The ozone hole was huge, then it turns out it’s patched. Sometimes arctic ice is melting so fast we will all be underwater in 2040. Other times it is somehow way more than expected.

I’m in California and the wildfires probably release a shit ton of bad juju into the air. Some volcano erupts and just spews black smoke into the air.

Our planet has literally been killed by asteroids. And life bounced back. There were no humans then sure, but what I’m trying to say is that nothing is really that certain. I’m a software engineer I literally hack systems to make them work together. We have insane test coverage and shit still goes wack sometimes. It gets patched and we move on, and our tech is definitely far better and powerful than a month, a year, or a decade ago.

Humans will figure it out. We aren’t going to die out. We shouldn’t kill progress because of doomerism fueled by paranoia.

lgkk··on What are farm animals thinking?
This is why I try to be as vegan as possible. Obviously not always possible. But I try. At home I don’t eat meat or use animal products.

Outside if my friends want to go Korean or something it almost always has eggs or beef broth but what can I do? Sucks but I get the tofu options.

lgkk··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas !!!!!!

I'm taking a break today and playing call of duty all day long. Tomorrow I will go for a hike or a walk, and then 26th is back to the business/grind.

I hope y'all take a good time to rest.

I'm thankful for the folks who are working over the break. Thankful for the gas station attendants, the police officers, healthcare professionals, on-call engineers and customer support, and so many others to whom I am eternally thankful for making our society.

lgkk··on Ask HN: What's the fastest programming language with a large standard library?
this. go has the best perf:dx:deployment ratio.
lgkk··on San Francisco’s rent prices have never returned to pre-2020 levels
Yeah for sure. I mean those areas are pretty far from each other (from SJ), but I get your point.

Personally I find the peninsula to be the best in terms of opportunities/quality of life/cost.

lgkk··on San Francisco’s rent prices have never returned to pre-2020 levels
I think it might be right, because while most of us tech folks on HN would be living in nicely kept old-school buildings or in new construction, most of SF is quite poor and might be living in areas like Mission or Excelsior and Bayview, basically SE of the city.

I've seen "low" rents there, but you get to live in a rough looking neighborhood and its not very clean or safe.

To be fair, if you're making 170-240k base you can easily afford 3-4k per month rent to live in a nicer building. People who are in relationships can stretch this even further, not to mention the RSUs/options.

Also, people live all the way down to SJ and then up the east bay. Rents in SJ are like 2500/mo for a single bedroom in a newer building, but its not that great of an area tbh. In mid-peninsula its comparable to SF rents because it is really nice, safe, and you get a lot more families. There are no homeless and barely any crime there, and SF is just 20-30 min away.

lgkk··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
It’s a cli program and pretty easy to make.

Every 20 minutes that I’m logged into my mac, it literally “say Recalibrate Vision” yes it’s corny but I like it.

A good reminder to rest my eyes for a few seconds by looking way at something distant, and back to coding.

lgkk··on LinkedIn shelved plan to migrate to Microsoft Azure cloud
How do you move that much data over to another cloud provider?

Without losing data or disrupting the customer?

Or do the databases just stay in the data center and not migrate.

lgkk··on Santa Cruz plans high-rise living as a fix for sky-high housing costs
Why not just build south of SJ and east?

Idk why all these people always pick the worst places to build and act surprised nobody wants more building there. Why not pick a reasonable place to begin with like somewhere that IS NOT developed.

It’s like people who want to turn Hawaii into a freakin resort mall.

Just don’t. Let SC be a cute beach town. Go Airbnb there.

People need to be reasonable and build somewhere that’s undeveloped. This is about as insane as proposing to build a high rise in sunset district. Why? Just go live elsewhere.

And I say this as someone who doesn’t own property. Save money and if you really want to own a house buy something in a up and coming area.

People literally did this throughout history. They moved to new places and developed those. Way easier today you’re not gonna travel in a caravan and suffer illnesses or get raided.

Let’s try to protect the environment and not ruin the few nice idyllic places we have left. Or better yet repeal prop 13.

lgkk··on Zero downtime Postgres upgrades
You could honestly just do in memory SQLite and use that lol idk that’s what I did because I wanted to quickly be able to handle thousands of simultaneous scheduling tasks.

Took like two hours and it works fine. Customers are happy. Event logs persist to s3 in case I need to replay (hasn’t happened once yet).

lgkk··on Should I build this app?
One way to find out. Build it! It sounds like a cool project.

lgkk··on Ask HN: Can we do better than Git for version control?
I’ve worked with git since 2016. I guess I must not be a power user because beyond using like six got commands I’ve never had any issues or felt like man my workflow is interrupted.

What features do you think need to be improved? From a purely UX pov I think git is probably the best software I’ve used. It just works.

lgkk··on Tyrannosaur's Stomach Contents Have Been Found
Interesting.

I hope we can clone and make dinosaurs and other extinct creatures again.

It would be fascinating to visit a park where we could see these creatures in as natural of a habitat as we can provide them today.

Aliens are coming. And they are bringing the 70s back.
lgkk··on Ask HN: What's your favorite UI library?
mui. Has everything I need. Easy to customize. Works.

At this point I just do whatever is best for solving my customers problems. Really could care less what hipster shenanigans are going on under the hood. Just want something that’s easy and done.

lgkk··on Ask HN: What charity have you recently donated to?
St Jude’s. I feel like children having to suffer like that is beyond awful. It seems like a good charity so I donate them.

Big brother big sisters. I’m a big brother. I love this organization does.

Animal shelters. Just random local ones. It would be dope if the govt gave a tax break up to $250 a year or something on pet food per year. Everyone who isn’t allergic and open to it should have a pet. They really make my day brighter, in a different way than family or friends.

lgkk··on Please help me with my Database choice
Yeah. And firestore is real-time so you could do some cool stuff with that. Try their sdk out it’s really easy.
lgkk··on Please help me with my Database choice
Use firebase firestore.

Use firebase auth.

Ship your app (checks watch) by tonight.

Good luck! Sounds like a cool app.

lgkk··on Tesla Model Y 2nd in new vehicle registrations in the US, overtaking Toyota RAV4
Same. I sold my 2018 P3D 2 years ago because of that exact reason.

I don't want to support someone who is a questionable human from a morals/virtue pov, regardless of how "smart" they are.

lgkk··on Spotify CFO cashes in £7.2M in shares after value surges on news of job cuts
400k TC, 200k base. That's pretty average for most experienced engineers.
