I think the worst thing that can happen is my situation which is that I’m in an okay job which I am thankful to have rn but I feel like I’m stagnating and not earning as much I should but at the same time not many jobs for what I’m interested in.
Starting small with a specific market and conquering it and then ramping up the product to go after bigger and bigger segments.
Or is that just impossible in today’s landscape?
Like for example as a swe I have an enough of money I could use to self fund myself. If it goes wrong I just need to work 2-3 more years and I have another 500k.

Money isn’t the end all be all. Id say if someone can make porn and publish it they can surely do something else with that “creative” energy.
Imo people today do that to make fast money and well… I don’t personally know why I should be forced to accept or approve that kind of way of money making. I don’t respect drug dealers, corrupt businessmen, nor YouTube scammers. I also don’t respect people who perpetuate mental harms by producing porn and contributing to these issues. I do respect startup founders that solve actual problems, teachers who help improve failing schools, or scientists who don’t accept corporate funding to paint an inaccurate picture.
I value persistence, virtue, and meritocracy and no amount of social force will make me accept certain behaviors.
Just being honest with my opinion.
And people are free to disagree with my pov as well, and do whatever they want.
I have no idea what came before, what will come, or even if this is all in my head.
Might as well play the game until its over lol. To be a pessimist or complacent is to die, for me at least.
I think groups are fine, but as a former child and later a mentor through orgs like BBBS, I do think having a personal presence goes far beyond just another group I can maybe sign up to join or be admitted to. Maybe someone who is themselves doing something in tech that mixes art + tech.

1. The interior quality was shit. By 10k miles everything was rattling and the quiet nature of the car meant even with bass thumping everything was just annoying af.
2. The car software felt like it got worse. I had bought FSD for $2k back in 2018. I thought it worked fine for that price. As it became more expensive, and pretty much 5x in price, I thought it was a ripoff. Around 2021 it felt like FSD had gotten way worse. More phantom braking, more getting tripped up and literally pulling into another lane for no reason, etc.
3. Going somewhere farther away became a huge PITA. It was fine waiting at a supercharger 20-30 minutes the first like two months. After that it became a hassle and eventually something I would dread. What a collossal waste of time.
I ended up going back to ICE and I probably won't ever get an EV again unless there are substantial improvements or even hot swap battery stations.
Yeah EVs are "cool", but at least for me if I'm being completely honest and not lying to make myself feel better, the allure wore off pretty quick.
What do you guys look for in a day care? Just curious as I don't have kids.

For them, it’s just business. That’s their whole point of existence, to run their business and grow even at their stage. I don’t work for these companies but I do hold positions in them through my 401k.
As an American I don’t really use that many cutting edge tools from Europe on a daily basis. Maybe my Miele vac.
On the other hand almost everyone in the world uses something made by American corporations.
People need to understand that just because you have a little bit of RSUs and a 200k base doesn’t mean you’re God.
You’re an asset like a machine. And you’re expensive to the bottom line.

I quit cold turkey a few years ago and now my vice is maybe I’ll drink a couple of beers or wine a couple times a year on special occasions.
I am much better creatively compared to just thinking I’m creative because weed knocked my IQ down by 20-40 points and anything seems “interesting” and groundbreaking there lol.

Way cheaper. Can’t get so fat and unhealthy. And far healthier since most vegans and vegetarians live long and healthy lives compared to other groups.

Rest assured, I will continue doing my best to ensure my family and I are never affected by any of this, and I don’t really need to feel bad either considering how much others are okay with just letting things degrade almost by a factor of 9-1. It’s also true that 10% of people account for 90% of contributions so I’m glad to be in the 10%.
I’ll keep focused on my business, skills as an SWE, and money management. That’s ultimately what keeps me and my family safe, happy, and open to new and awesome experiences. I wish everyone the best for themselves.

I really don’t understand how you don’t get that being high on certain drugs and being really harmful to other people is comparable to a video game addict who at worst would just stay in their room and smell bad?

Literally picked a couple things I like (pc gaming and rock climbing) which require me to maintain health insurance and a good financial status so I can buy a 4090 and whatever to play some games. I have to be productive to enjoy those things. That’s not even what we are talking about, and I don’t understand why you conflate those with cartels who behead and dismember people and people who just disturb the peace or attack people while on hard drugs.
And yeah I guess I don’t approve seeing people destroy my city with drugs and violence. I’m paying more than half of my annual personal income in taxes, and what I have to do is to avoid certain areas of my city at night because it’s not safe and not a nice sight with people self harming themselves voluntarily and on purpose.
Why the insanely unrelated analogies? I specifically said drugs, like the kind you see when you pass any alley near Civic Center or downtown SF with dozens of people just laying there and drug dealers with backpacks walking around. Is that a sign of a good society? Those people don’t want help and they sure as hell aren’t engaging in anything productive like building software, buildings, or offering any services on Taskrabbit..
yes it’s sad but there’s also a balance and line between what’s acceptable and not for a functioning society. This is a minority % wise of society (don’t want help, aren’t interested in getting clean) and they cause a disproportionate level of destruction. The problem is drugs and people are willing to do whatever it takes across the drug supply chain to keep it operating.
Btw you need to be productive in order to afford rock climbing or skiing or even gaming on a pc…

But the older I get the more I’m on the side of this stuff isn’t necessary. It is detrimental to society and if someone wants to do drugs they should honestly reconsider their life and do something productive.

When there are way nicer and better options out there. And yea I get it not everyone has it well. I certainly didn’t coming from a 3rd world country, but I still found other ways. But that’s not an excuse. Honestly kind of demeaning/stupid when well to do people treat it that way.
Fwiw I develop on a Ubuntu workstation. I build and deploy to mostly Ubuntu or bare bones Linux.
What is an alternative?
Become an entrepreneur. Following the rules that everyone else blindly follows is not satisfactory. I completely empathize with you. Being failed for not following instructions while probably knowing more than your peers and maybe professor.
Use LinkedIn to find founders who work on a startup doing something you find interesting. Cold message them and let them know you want to work for whatever they will pay (don’t devalue yourself from step 1 and offer to do it free - you might get a probationary offer or low per hour rate) and see how you can be useful.
People like us need to channel our energy into building stuff that does solves problems in a new and better way than what everyone else’s doing.
I always thought something was wrong with me for leaving whatever I found better than before and not being rewarded for it because I operate in non traditional ways. Only when I decided to say F it and did that for myself did I start to find happiness. You have no idea how amazing it feels when you find your first customers. I am from a poor family so had to figure it out all myself and I’m still learning everyday. It’s awesome. I hope you find the same outlet for yourself.
