lfuller··on USDA ignoring the science on low-carb diets
In my experience that’s the primary positive point of carb-restrictive diets.

In general I find it extremely hard to restrict calories under a standard North American diet due to craving carb-heavy foods and feeling a constant base level of hunger. When on keto I tend to only feel hunger around dinner time and have no issues at all with portion control throughout the rest of the day.

I think the real advantage of low carb diets is regulating hunger and making it easier to properly manage carb intake - at least in my case.

lfuller··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
To be clear that was a black-market additive in unregulated cannabis vape cartridges, nothing to do with nicotine vapes and definitely not relevant to a company as regulated as Juul.

This would be like saying Coors Light is dangerous because your cousin's moonshine had methanol in it.

lfuller··on Web3 is centralized and inefficient
If a company didn't care about security or other "abstract cybersecurity concerns" and instead only cared about selling something to their users, why would they use something like blockchain which is entirely based on abstract technical and cybersecurity concepts instead of existing web technologies which are more efficient and easier to use?
lfuller··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
How would this work? Parts of Canada, parts of Mexico, Panama, Colombia, mainland Ecuador, Peru, parts of Brazil, and a bunch of islands are all on Eastern Time. Even if the US changed their own definition of EST it wouldn't change other countries' observations of EST.
lfuller··on One in three young people say they felt happier during lockdown
This study was from the first lockdown period in June / July 2020, which I expect not to be strongly correlated with the way people feel now.

In my experience and from talking with friends and family, it wasn't the initial lockdown that took a toll on their mental health - it was the sustained lockdowns over a two year period.

The first lockdown was stressful and there was a lot of uncertainty, but it was also novel and exciting in a way with a sense of the entire world coming together to overcome something. After three or four lockdowns that no longer held.

lfuller··on Ketogenic Diets and Chronic Disease: Benefits vs. Risks
The author also maintains a blog called "Veggie Quest" which promotes vegan living, hence the anti-meat slant to the paper.
lfuller··on Ketogenic Diets and Chronic Disease: Benefits vs. Risks
Keto was originally developed as an anti-epilepsy diet until it was picked up as a weight loss diet - it's not claimed to be any kind of historical diet. I believe you're thinking of the paleo ("paleolithic") diet.
lfuller··on Crypto Wash Trading
"Selling" crypto from one wallet to another wallet that you own to create the appearance of high trade volume and increase the apparent value of the asset.
lfuller··on SpaceX installed 29 Raptor engines on a Super Heavy rocket last night
If you truly believe that you can make a car that is significantly better than the current state of the art AND turn it into a viable business at scale, then what are you waiting for? You’ll be a billionaire.
lfuller··on Apple TV 4K Gets A12 Bionic
They did redesign the remote. It uses a click wheel instead of a touch pad, and they included a dedicated back button.
lfuller··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2021)

lfuller··on Robinhood sued by family of stock trader who killed himself
I don’t believe being “liable for users’ misfortune” is the issue here. While Robinhood showed the user being down hundreds of thousands of dollars, this was actually a UI issue and the user actually had a profit.

lfuller··on SpaceX will attempt to recover Super Heavy rocket by catching with launch tower
It's my understanding that the purpose of landing at the launch tower like this is to reduce refurbishment time rather than to lower weight from the legs - their stated goal is being able to re-launch in under an hour after landing. Having a second landing lower would add similar delay to simply landing at a pad.
lfuller··on Pfizer submits Covid vaccine to FDA for approval, to distribute in December
One question I have about mRNA vaccines that I haven't been able to find the answer to through my own searching: how is the mRNA delivered to the cell?

All the articles I read say that the mRNA is "taken up by the cell", but what is the mechanism? Do cells naturally just absorb free-floating mRNA? Or is a modified virus used to inject the mRNA?

lfuller··on Pfizer submits Covid vaccine to FDA for approval, to distribute in December
Is that not a common side effect of all vaccines? I can't think of a time when I haven't had to take Advil for a couple days after getting the flu shot due to body aches.
lfuller··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
That's when playing backwards-compatible games (PS4 games on PS5, and Xbox / 360 / One games on Xbox Series X) as Microsoft spent more time optimizing their console to play old games. PS5 loads next-gen titles significantly faster than the Xbox Series X due to the 2.5x faster SSD.
lfuller··on Netflix is now doing per-shot encoding for UHD content
The per-scene dynamic metadata of Dolby Vision is what makes the most difference in my opinion, not the theoretical max nits / bits. I can see a pretty dramatic difference on my LG C9 OLED when watching HDR10 vs DV.
lfuller··on SpaceX Starlink average speedtest is 42.3Mbps down / 9.7 Mbps up
To be fair, the network is currently only at ~5% capacity and average speeds can be expected to increase as the constellation is fleshed out and direct laser linkages are brought online.
lfuller··on Show HN: Tiny CLI to save AWS costs in dev environments when you're sleeping
docker-compose and kubernetes
lfuller··on SpaceX test flight of Starship SN-5 [video]
This doesn’t take into account that the methane used in fuelling can be extracted from the atmosphere and that much of the fuel / oxidizer mixture actually is removed from Earth entirely.
lfuller··on Show HN: Trail Router – generate running routes that prefer greenery and nature
This is actually a wonderful product - thanks for making it! I've looked for a website that did this for a long time, and this works surprisingly well. It actually produced a route that is very similar to one I found myself.
lfuller··on Ultraviolet Irradiation of Blood: “The Cure That Time Forgot”? (2018)

In the video linked you can see that he clearly mentioned "disinfectant" then suggested injecting it. There's no other way to spin that.

lfuller··on Book Review: The Body Keeps the Score
While what you're saying is correct, you're describing CPTSD (complex post traumatic stress disorder) rather than PTSD, which typically results from a single traumatic event.
lfuller··on Radio Attack Lets Hackers Steal Cars with Just $20 Worth of Gear
Apparently Apple does something similar to this in order to unlock Macbooks with an Apple Watch. I don't have a link right off the bat, but I remember watching an interview with Craig Federighi where he explains that the Apple Watch uses precise timers to ensure that users are actually near their computers to avoid relay attacks.
lfuller··on ‘I must fundamentally change and grow up’: Uber CEO Travis Kalanick’s apology
From what I've seen, Uber is far more convenient than taxis. When I call a taxi I have to wait anywhere from 20 - 40 minutes only to ride in a usually dirty vehicle for inflated prices by an aggressive driver. Never mind the typical "our VISA machine isn't working" bit.

I've literally never waited more than 5 minutes for an Uber and it's usually closer to 2 - 3. They're fast, clean, fare splitting is a non-issue, and the drivers are almost always friendly. It really is on a different level than taxis in my experience.

lfuller··on VR
I own an Oculus Rift and find that you only really get sweaty with very physically active games (AudioShield, Space Pirate Trainer, etc.). When it starts getting sweaty I'll usually just go do something else for a few minutes until it dries.
lfuller··on Pebble CEO explains why he sold to Fitbit
I've found that the battery life issue has been largely overblown, especially with the Apple Watch Series 2. On most days (all features enabled, moderate app usage, no GPS usage) I still have between 65% - 75% of battery life remaining.

Even if the battery life wasn't that good, is it really that hard to take your watch off before bed and set it on a magnetic charger? I've worn watches my whole life and have never slept with them on.

lfuller··on Why cyclists should be able to roll through stop signs, ride through red lights
The Idaho Stop doesn't apply to red lights - only stop signs. Its intended use is on smaller streets with low traffic.
lfuller··on Why cyclists should be able to roll through stop signs, ride through red lights
> I appreciate your point, I just think it's rather like saying a speed limit isn't a target. While it's true and the spirit in which the rules are intended, the reality is that most drivers will assume driving the limit is reasonable unless and until it very obviously is not.

I disagree with this counterpoint. In "Idaho Stops" the law is extremely clear - a red light is treated as a full stop, and a stop sign is treated as a yield. As yield and stop are both well understood on American roads this law would be clear to cyclist and driver alike.

Following your line of reasoning, yield signs should be replaced with stop signs as the harm caused by drivers blowing through them outweighs the benefits. Do you agree with this?
