lfowles··on FBI is warning people against using public phone-charging stations
Or is she....
lfowles··on Time to end the speed limit in US airspace?
It also only carried 2...
lfowles··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
If it only takes one course it shouldn't take long for them to get up to speed. Gauge their ability to learn rather than what they have learned.
lfowles··on What all is involved in simulating an economy for a game that involves trading?
The author is active on here, that's probably why :)
lfowles··on Civilization 7 Is in Development
Europe Universalis is the one that made me actually want to learn history more. Civ was just a game with some historical names attached to units and buildings in comparison.
lfowles··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
I think the tell is mostly that gums bleed after flossing if they haven't been flossed in a while.
lfowles··on Ask HN: Strategies for working with engineers that are too smart?
It sounds like fun, but would you choose to do that in a work setting?
lfowles··on FAA NOTAM System Outage
> gently _saying_ there's a problem with a small sound clip of "bat" instead of an angry Chirp

Those do exist! At least one smoke detector in my house has voice (primarily to differentiate between smoke and CO alarms)

lfowles··on Ask HN: How to move from traditional tech into game dev?
Am I mistaken in remembering it was prototyped in PICO-8?
lfowles··on State of the Sanderson 2022
A while back I realized I bought a series I didn't really like after the first book, but forgot about. Audible exchanged each book for a credit no questions asked (even the first one that I did listen to!) That plus the constant credit deals and audiobooks for $5 or less... I don't see how they do it.
lfowles··on Disney+ demands users’ age and gender so it can “deliver targeted advertising”
No such luck. The Hulu no-ad tier still has ads for a select few shoes.
lfowles··on Factorio for Nintendo Switch is now available
Probably from larger save files than you'd feasibly be building on the Switch alone.
lfowles··on Remote work may have fueled a baby boom among U.S. women
Yep! We purposefully live within 30 minutes of both sets of parents, but due to covid and their own careers the arrangement didn't help us out as much as we had anticipated.
lfowles··on Facts about State Machines
Programming is state machines all the way down, it's just the convenience of expression that makes a difference.
lfowles··on CPSC warns consumers to stop using male-to-male extension cords sold on Amazon
I remember one summer camp I went to as a kid where the showers were "spicy". Much in the same way a 9 volt battery feels on your tongue. In hindsight... what the hell???
lfowles··on CPSC warns consumers to stop using male-to-male extension cords sold on Amazon
Rehang your christmas lights...
lfowles··on Automated testing in Bevy
This surely isn't what was meant in previous conversation, but Unreal Engine 5 added MassEntity which is uh... an Entity Fragment Processor approach. (Because Components are already an object that exists, it probably would have been an extra special kind of confusing if it adopted typical ECS naming.)

lfowles··on Walmart Sells Fake 30TB Hard Drive That's Two Small SD Cards
Even with their Amazon Basics brand, I have a stick blender with a "TUREO" button rather than a "TURBO" button!
lfowles··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
With a little instruction anyone can drive a manual poorly :)
lfowles··on Smart thermostats inadvertently strain electric power grids
78 at my thermostat means some rooms in the upper floor might be 84+!
lfowles··on Nearly a third of new subscribers to news publications cancel in the first 24hrs
This is a service provided by the card companies. For instance here's Visa's: https://developer.visa.com/capabilities/vau
lfowles··on FTC takes action against CafePress for data breach cover up
Now I'm even more confused, heh. From the previous page:

> If you are a single-member LLC that is disregarded as an entity separate from its owner, enter the owner’s SSN (or EIN, if the owner has one). *Do not enter the disregarded entity’s EIN*

Edit: I suppose the distinction is that you should have an EIN for your name

lfowles··on Increased Subscription Pricing for IDEs, .NET Tools, and the All Products Pack
Surely they've already been getting raises of some sort for the past 7 years! This is just the product catching up.
lfowles··on FTC takes action against CafePress for data breach cover up
I think the W9 form says to use SSN in case of a disregarded entity (such as a single member LLC).
lfowles··on Energy crunch concerns lead Japan’s government to call for reduced AC use
One note I remember from my research, variable speed systems are tightly coupled to the thermostat so you may not be able to use an easily automated thermostat. My thermostat shows humidity (Mitsubishi MHK2), but as far as I can tell that doesn't factor into when/how hard the AC runs.
lfowles··on Energy crunch concerns lead Japan’s government to call for reduced AC use
Seems about accurate, but the variable speed systems are a big QoL upgrade regardless. Just being able to have AC on lower speeds has helped a lot with humidity even when the house doesn't necessarily need cooling. We upgraded last summer from a 3 ton unit to a 3.5 ton unit (max size our ducts would support). It's still struggling to hold 75 when over 100 outside and some upper rooms hit 80, but that's more down to our ducts and layout of the house. The lower humidity and constant (yet inaudibly low) air flow makes it feel much more comfortable at 75 than with the old system.
lfowles··on Tell HN: Job interview canceled due to looming recession
> You can pay for it working at Starbucks

Ah, so housing included in tuition huh? :D (/s)

lfowles··on Ask HN: What to do about ‘Good at programming Bad at Leetcode’
It's something I consider every couple of years. But unfortunately I see a lot of similarities in the hiring process for much smaller interesting companies hiring remotely that seem to be cargo culting BigCo hiring practices. BigCo from my example were just the only ones to be open enough about what will occur during interviews. Is it something fulfilling? Probably not, but I have 5 years of practically unpaid work to get caught up on.
lfowles··on Ask HN: What to do about ‘Good at programming Bad at Leetcode’
Glad that worked out for you. After a day of watching my now 1.5 year old the brain fog sets in. I tried grinding Leetcode for a while but the pace of progress was glacial and nowhere near the recommended pace for BigCo interviews. I'm glad I went back to doing my own thing even though nothing has come of it yet. Doing Leetcode felt like memorizing party tricks that wouldn't even guarantee a job at the end.
lfowles··on Extreme include discipline for C++ code
Sure, but you can also forward declare references!
