lexhaynes··on Fighting Depression by Staying Awake
The patient underwent this therapy under the guidance of a doctor. Any increase in suicidal thoughts would have been caught.

This is a much riskier therapy to try on your own, true.

lexhaynes··on Let's Colonize Titan
Paranoid delusions?
lexhaynes··on Let's Colonize Titan
Sweden is not the whole world.
lexhaynes··on Let's Colonize Titan
No it wouldn't. Not at all.
lexhaynes··on Italian or British? Writer solves riddle of spaghetti bolognese
"Spaghetti in the the style of Bologna", as opposed to what can perhaps be interpreted in the English phrasing as "bolognese spaghetti"
lexhaynes··on Female monkeys use wile to rally troops
It might be pithy but nature is full of counter-examples.

Come on, now!

lexhaynes··on The psychology of stress and burnout
Hello! I'm currently on the "couple of years and a failed job" track... any advice?
lexhaynes··on Soylent halts sales of its powder as customers keep getting sick
Can you elaborate on these rumors?
lexhaynes··on Soylent halts sales of its powder as customers keep getting sick
He seems to have obsessive compulsive tendencies so severe that he can't eat food (e.g. "Kitchens are dirty") combined with some narcissism...
lexhaynes··on Ask HN: How do you organise/integrate all the information in your life?
I do a combo of a little notebook I always carry around and iPhone Notes. Simple!
lexhaynes··on [dead]
Wouldn't you notice the blood...?
lexhaynes··on Ask HN: What is your favorite internet rabbit hole?
I'm very interested in health and fitness and often lose hours at Mark's Daily Apple (primal lifestyle and health blog): http://www.marksdailyapple.com/tag/dear-mark/

The Getting Stronger blog is another wonderful health and fitness blog which focuses on training the mind to thrive in difficult conditions, though it has really amazing insights on diet and training as well: http://gettingstronger.org/about-this-blog/

lexhaynes··on Extreme side-effects of antidepressants
Please intervene. Get her some real counseling! Get her to a psychiatrist! And when she is able, get her exercising and taking probiotics. Good luck.
lexhaynes··on A Harmony in Living: Happy families are indeed all alike (2011)
XXY (Klinefelter's) and X (Turner's syndrome) are both very real chromosomal intersex conditions, though perhaps intersex isn't the PC word.
lexhaynes··on Show HN: Tomato – Pomodoro Timer
There's no "science" about it. The pomodoro technique is just a technique, nothing more, to help people manage their time.
lexhaynes··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)
To be fair, young girls are heavily socialized to play with dolls, to play "mommy and baby" games, to push around toy baby carriages... in essence the "average" girl has been trained for motherhood her whole life.
lexhaynes··on ‘Five Second Rule’ for Food on Floor Is Untrue, Study Finds
I noticed this as well when I started taking probiotics, eating unpasteurized cheeses, and having sauerkraut or kimchi every other day or so.

I'll get a sniffle for a day and then that'I'll be the end of it. I haven't been sick in a year.

lexhaynes··on Music theory for nerds
I think the "dismissive" tone is entirely sarcastic, and really helps to de-emphasize the very intimidating complexity of music theory. I've always been curious about music theory, but have really failed to get anywhere close to learning it because of how formidable the field is. This article made that complexity feel a little less untouchable for someone who was not trained in music, and the sarcastically "dismissive" tone helped a lot.
lexhaynes··on Existential Depression in Gifted Children and Adults (2009) [pdf]
They likely meant pregnant before the end of high school, as pregnancy in adulthood is actually an indication of success!
lexhaynes··on What goes wrong in the brain chemistry of a gambling addict?
I would have liked to know more about those "certain genetic vulnerabilities". Detailing THOSE would have made this article much more interesting. I'm disinclined to read the writer's book because of how rehashed her theory is.
lexhaynes··on Gmail Will Now Support CSS Media Queries
Wow. Finally!
lexhaynes··on Advice I Wish I'd Been Told (1999)
That deep attention to what you are doing sounds like "flow" -- Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's concept of optimal experience. See his talk here: http://www.ted.com/talks/mihaly_csikszentmihalyi_on_flow?lan...
lexhaynes··on How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat
When you say you don't eat sugar, what does that mean? Do you eat fruit? Bread? Things that metabolize to sugar -- potatoes, squash, tomatoes, grapes, watermelon, barbecue sauce etc. Do you ever indulge in chocolate cake? What about wine or beer?

I just find the term "sugar" to be extremely vague when 50% of foods metabolize to sugar...

lexhaynes··on ITT Technical Institutes Shuts Down
I completely believe in the value of education for its own sake, but why does a liberal arts education need to be 4 years long? Couldn't we have a system where a student spends one intensive year focusing on liberal arts, and the rest of the time at university can be devoted to job training?
lexhaynes··on How to Tell a Mother Her Child Is Dead
One hundred people! That's an epidemic.
lexhaynes··on Most olive oils sold in the United States are adulterated or deceptively labeled
What does that mean, out of curiosity? Do you mean vegetarian protein which is harder to absorb?
lexhaynes··on Most olive oils sold in the United States are adulterated or deceptively labeled
Olive trees tend to thrive in hot, arid places like Italy, Greece, and Spain in the summer.
lexhaynes··on [dead]
Why is this on HN?
lexhaynes··on Ask dang: How many HN comments per day do you read?
I often read the comments first, and then read the article. I love comments sections in general (Gawker, Gothamist, NYT come to mind in terms of decent commenters), but I've never learned as much as in the HN comments section.

I probably read ~500 comments a day on HN.
