lewilewilewi··on I lost all my savings in a mistaken Ethereum transaction
While this is true, it might be costly (as it has been for Citigroup) https://www.ft.com/content/a50cd095-2811-41ab-b783-b09944691...
lewilewilewi··on Localisation is too hard for Gmail
What about a 'did you mean "in:trash"' if it detects the localised variant?
lewilewilewi··on Harvard, Oxford, Stanford doctors among leaders of global anti-lockdown movement
You can't use Sweden as a counterfactual for the US (or any other country aside from their nearest neighbours) because their culture is so different. Most people in Sweden live by themselves, it's a reasonably socially-distant culture by default, etc. Saying that it is what happens if you don't lockdown or close schools isn't comparing apples with apples.

First amendment - yes, in most cases. Second amendment? Hell no.
lewilewilewi··on Getting my personal data out of Facebook
This bit

>Article 12(1) GDPR requires that the information provided to an individual in response to an access request is in “a concise, transparent, intelligible and easily accessible form, using clear and plain language”. At its most basic, this means that the information Facebook provides in response to a request should be capable of being understood by the average person. Highly technical data in its original form is likely to be meaningless to the average Facebook user and providing such data would be inconsistent with Facebook’s GDPR obligations.

is reflective of the scorn with which Facebook treats their users.

lewilewilewi··on Jerks on the Internet: what my first DDoS taught me
The lesson here appears to be that the balance between feature development and fixing technical debt isn't obvious - these things are measured historically and you only know that you've got it wrong after the fact. In fact, if you experience the exact same codebase and don't suffer the ddos, did you get the balance right after all?
lewilewilewi··on Gravity Payments: Seattle company with a minimum salary of $70K
Why is it comparative? In the article it says that people left because they didn't like that others were getting a larger part rise to take them up to the minimum salary, which seems that envy is a more important driving force (for those people) than everyone getting paid a good living wage.
lewilewilewi··on Gravity Payments: Seattle company with a minimum salary of $70K
The old complaint of corporations that they can't find enough good staff, a shortage of workers etc always amuses me, because the unsaid part of it is 'at the price we're willing to pay'. Offer more money, you'll get the staff you want/need.
lewilewilewi··on A History of Singapore in 10 Dishes
I absolutely love Kaya Toast - I had it every time I stayed in Singapore!
lewilewilewi··on How the US has hidden its empire
Killing Hope (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_Hope) is a write up of all major US efforts at controlling other countries. I don't know what Americans think of it, but it's fascinating as an outsider.

lewilewilewi··on Why Do Rich People Love Endurance Sports? (2017)
The safety aspect is... well, in my experience, the rich like dangerous sports. Think skiing, horse riding/polo, sailing/yachting. The rules of boxing are named after an aristocrat. They're all expensive, they're all fun, and they can all kill you without too much trouble. lewilewilewi··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
Cool, so my measly pension is invested in a pension fund (as it has to be, legally). The pension fund managers then buy some exotics, which gives me exposure to the same exotics. then something bad happens, such as 2008, and I lose my future. Thanks guys, the stringent requirements really worked in my favour there!

lewilewilewi··on What's Wrong with Students?
It's ironic that the author misuses the word 'comprises' in his rant about the quality of English education. Things never comprise of - a group comprises the parts, or it is composed of the parts. The parts compose the whole.
lewilewilewi··on Pseudo-public space in London
It is insidious, as the land is being sold off by public bodies (local councils etc) without any announcement, and then there is no signage to let people know that the land is no longer public. The first that most people know is when they've broken some rule (not law) and are kicked off the land by private security guards.
