lewdev··on Remote work won, don't let anyone gaslight you to believe otherwise
I think the negatives apply to new/inexperienced workers and it's unfortunate that it wasn't addressed in the article, but this affects the smaller population of the entire workforce and will be one of those things that will be improved on over time. I imagine there being new processes to get new workers on-boarded and adjusted to remote work and that could be having them temporarily in the office.

I also started my career in a cubicle farm with a lot of other software engineers which was great for my growth, but I think that could be replaced with adjustments to the process of ramping up juniors. Perhaps colleges or training programs will incorporate training to deal with the lack of seniors or assign juniors with seniors to work together in a mentorship with guidelines.

lewdev··on Canadian man stuck in triangle of e-commerce fraud
Two bad things:

* There is clear fraud going on and the authorities are doing nothing about it.

* The authorities mistakenly attacked the victim and not owning up to it.

I don't get it. These things are all still possible to do. It's just the less preferred thing to do.

lewdev··on Ask HN: How do I code offline for a week?
I think eszed had a good point. I do appreciate the philosophy of taking in what you are doing in the situation rather than turning it into a code-fest. I have attempted that and failed. It just felt like forcing a situation that didn't work. Just take things as they come.

I also think that answers like this are one of many. Let people put in their 2 cents. I think it's great to have a variety of answers that approach the question differently.

lewdev··on I applied to 250 jobs and timed how long each one took
That's good to hear because I stopped writing them because I started to feel like it discouraged companies from looking further.

I believe people in the hiring process are looking to work efficiently and a cover letter is just more stuff to read. They want to just read your resume because that's what will get passed around and what matters. Anything in your cover letter is mostly things they want to know in the interview.

lewdev··on China Bans iPhone Use for Government Officials at Work
Destroy the West? More like copy it. It's a classic Chinese can't create original stuff so they copied Top Gun.
lewdev··on China Bans iPhone Use for Government Officials at Work
Isn't it more difficult to hack Apple devices than Android? Also, would Apple allow the US government to plant spyware on their devices sold in China? I also would more likely believe that China wants to monitor their own party members and thus, force them to use Android devices.
lewdev··on China Bans iPhone Use for Government Officials at Work
But are the mirrored for the same reasons? If I'm not mistaken Isn't Tiktok famously misusing private data of its users? Which I believe was the reason for the US ban.

lewdev··on Companies Requiring Full-Time In-Office Are Struggling to Recruit New Employees
Given how beneficial it is to employees and it's ubiquity, quality workers are reasonable to expect this flexibility when looking for their next company to join.

This news is what I was hoping for.

lewdev··on Ask HN: Why does Firefox have such a low market share anyways?
I think it's because Firefox was behind on supporting the browser features that Chrome did, so some pages just didn't work on Firefox. I see that problem happening much less often now, but if I had to recommend a browser to any user, I'd tell them to get Chrome just to avoid any incompatibility issues.

I like Firefox mainly because I fear that at some point Chrome will not support ublock origin and its ad blocking features. Also, ublock origin can be installed on the mobile version of Firefox, whereas it can't be installed on the mobile version of Chrome.

lewdev··on News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier (2013)
> Tyler Cowen once remarked we’d be better off reading far more history than about current events.

Makes me wonder if there's a market for news that's only based on events that happened 3-6 months ago, so that we have some conclusiveness and perhaps something actionable or relevance to what happened.

lewdev··on In every country people think others are less happy than they themselves say (2017)
so I guess you didn't read the first part of his comment where he said "Not reading reports..."
lewdev··on Ask HN: How are you a good dad to your kids?
* Read everyday. It's hard in the beginning because they lose interest easily, but consistency is key. * Always keep things interesting for them. This is hard because there will definitely be activities you want to do but the kids will find boring or too difficult. * When they get older, at least 5 years old, start a sport. I've been taking my kids to judo. It takes a ton of time for me, but I know it will do them good if they keep at it. I grew up practicing judo, so that helps. * We've watched many anime series together. Definitely watch "Avatar the Last Airbender" and "One Piece." * I'm a gamer, so we've played a lot of games together: Minecraft (of course), Mario 3D World (on Switch), Castle Crashers, Minecraft Dungeons, and other co-op beat-em-ups.

I honestly don't know if it's the most valuable things to do because my kids are still young. I have 4 now, but I believe always finding time to spend with them and have things to talk about is most important no matter what it is.

I always liked this advice: Don't give the things you've never had, teach them the things you didn't know when you were young.

lewdev··on Writing: Good career move, terrible career (2018)
I agree, I dislike the use of "exploit" in this context because it sounds like enthusiastic people are mindlessly accepting these poor paying jobs. I like to believe that they know exactly what they're getting into, why it pays less, and they are taking the job for other reasons such as the ones you've named: prestige and glamour.
lewdev··on AI Will Create More Developers, Not Less
The "loom" in this case is kind of a loom that helps people create other tools. Creating tools is generally not an automated task and with AI it will be easier.

lewdev··on US Police raids home; sues homeowner over CCTV footage of raid
It's real tough conjuring a false warrant, miscounting money, breaking into a home with guns, terrorizing a home, disconnecting a security system, and eyeballing a lemon pound cake.

It's more plausible that they never thought they'd get caught.

lewdev··on OpenAI should be called ClosedAI
I think the word "open" meant a lot of good things when I started learning computer science. It meant that people shared knowledge in this complex world of technology. It helped lift everyone in tech. OpenAI just puts that on it's head and moves on.

When OpenAI came along, I felt like this was all going in the right direction and that it would do what I felt was the right way about it. I'm disappointed and I think they should change their name. I know it will fall on deaf ears, but since you're asking "So what?" that's my answer.

lewdev··on Ask HN: Why are 5 comments/day “posting too fast”, what precisely is “too fast”?
He mentioned that he didn't add his email address to his account which could be why his account is limited, to which he said he was not willing to give up because he's had "enough spam already." Just use a fake one.

I'm starting to see the absurdity of this post.

lewdev··on Hackers are reportedly getting laid off by organized crime groups
I tried have it written like a "mafia boss" and "gangster" to "hackers" but ChatGPT did not like that.

Prompt: Write a layoff letter to my penetration tester employees in a heavy Italian accent.

Dear [Employee Name],

It is with a heavy heart that I gotta tell ya that we gotta let you go. It's nothing personal, it's just business, capisce?

I wanna say, youse guys have been great at what you do. You really know how to get into those systems and find all the weak spots. But, unfortunately, things ain't looking too good for our organization right now, and we gotta cut back on some expenses.

I wanna let you know that we appreciate all the hard work you've done for us, and we're gonna make sure youse guys get a decent severance package. We also wanna help you out in finding new job opportunities, so if there's anything we can do to help, just let us know.

Again, I wanna emphasize that it's nothing personal. Youse guys are some of the best in the business, but we gotta do what we gotta do to keep the organization running.

Take care, and good luck with your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

lewdev··on Play Counter Strike 1.6, with full multiplayer, in the browser
Sorry to make this an "old-off" but I played Action Quake, a Quake II mod that was how you described your CS experience. An interesting feature on Action Quake that never made it to its modern counterparts was being able to jump into an enemy to perform a kick attack. It's also my first experience with friendly fire. I had a blast playing online with Action Quake. That was probably the time I realized mouse + keyboard was far superior to keyboard-only.
lewdev··on “Fun disabled by administrator” (2015)
Nah, I'm just imagining the stickler teachers being like, "A game? Fun? In school? That must NOT be allowed!" And being satisfied when it's removed.
lewdev··on “Fun disabled by administrator” (2015)
I recall a teacher creating an RPG-like learning system that tracks numbers that help them "level up" by "gaining xp" through activities that help in their weak areas.

Sorry to be lazy to not look it up, but I thought it was an interesting take on gamifying learning.

lewdev··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
Also trained in judo for many years. But I'm pretty sure you won't injure multiple areas in one "grappling" incident and if you break a rib, you would normally sit out the rest of the day.

When you're training injury does happen but not in more than one area of your body unless you were literally being beaten to a pulp.

So yes, I'm 100% sure it was a malicious intent if they're claiming that he died during "bicycle training" which oddly included grappling.
