lewaldman··on Spritz – read 500 words per minute without any training
Ok... but almost all that you said is a UX Issue...

Imagine an UI with a circle and the spritz box above. You put your thumb in the middle, push right it starts to show the words forward, push farther from midle => faster. Push it left => slower. Left after middle, rewinding text.

You could even use up, down to go back entiry frases or paragraphs.

Regarding linearity, you could use color/color fading to wrap phrases, or show two to four words per time moving just the red letter according to speed.

Personally... I think it's an amazing Idea! :)

False dichotomy? :P
lewaldman··on How to Burn Out Programming
IMHO the main cause of burnout are managers.

A manager must act as a shield for the people under them and not as a whip from the upper managemnt (Like a lot of them do, my current one included).

I'm brazilian...

You can't, and should not, ever; spoke about corruption on a media were a south american/african could read you. US got corruption? We got it worst! Much much much worst. Worst in a level were the King of Soccer (Pelé) can say on national television that the money that would be stealed during the construction of the stadiums for the world cup would came back as tourists money.

And, beside that... we have universal health care. (It's not fancy nor without big lines of people or up to 5 hours waiting to a doctor but it exists, and works. Specially for serious illnes like cancer, HIV or Hepatitis).

lewaldman··on Lock Picking – A Basic Guide
It stay stuck on the outer frame because in the process to drill the holes on the lock frame, the alignment of them is never 100% accurate.

The torque is not variable, the order that you press the pins is.

lewaldman··on Lock Picking – A Basic Guide
One thing that I did when I was learning it, was to prepare a set of training locks.

I bought two locks, diassembled then and reassembled leaving aside a number of pins out.

So I had a lock with only one pin, one with two, one with 4 and one with all the 5 pins.

It helped a lot because you learn to feel when the pin stucks on the open position and also to learn about how much pressure you need to put on the tensor. Too much and it will prevent the pins to go down. Too little and the pins will not stuck on the outer frame.

Ahh, and ofcourse, see the lock diassembled over my desk, and reassemble it gave a lot more insight on how it works than to just watch some animations.

lewaldman··on Emacs users are like Terry Pratchett’s Igors
Former VIm user... Current Emacs user.

IMHO, Evil Mode makes to use emacs doable OTOH, the fact that there are so much extensions and possibilities under the hood makes to use emacs mandatory! :P

lewaldman··on Uruguay legalises production and sale of cannabis
I really believe that the solution to the crack problem would be to provide, for free, crack to crack addicts on controled environment, with controled doses, with a medical staff ready to act in case an emergency, and with the added option to get treatment.

I know it will sound a little bit... hmmm... not-what-a-good-guy-would-say but, with this kind of policy in 10 years most of addicts would be dead, dying or getting treatment.

It's a darwin-aware policy that would remove the main problems with crack: Drug traffic and crazy killer zombies on the streets.

lewaldman··on Ask HN: Open Source alternatives to Disqus?
> Of course it is up to me to use disqus, but, as i mentioned, 99% of people wouldn't know what is happening.

Not intending to sound ofensive nor harsh but 99% of people don't really care with what is happening.

And... as an experienced sysadmin (+15 years), I really disagree that get a VPS+Nginx+Apache+WP+MySQL+OAuth+Akismet running, and them, maintening it long term is as trivial as some Github/Tumblr pages (or a static site generator) with a pasted JS in the bottom of the theme file.

edit: added WP to the list of things to setup.

lewaldman··on Debugging Python Like a Boss
Here is my setup:

- I have a ~/.python/sitecustomize.py file with the following:

# Start debug on Exception

import bdb import sys

def info(type, value, tb):

   if hasattr(sys, 'ps1') \
         or not sys.stdin.isatty() \
         or not sys.stdout.isatty() \
         or not sys.stderr.isatty() \
         or issubclass(type, bdb.BdbQuit) \
         or issubclass(type, SyntaxError):
      # we are in interactive mode or we don't have a tty-like
      # device, so we call the default hook
      sys.__excepthook__(type, value, tb)
   else:
      import traceback, ipdb
      # we are NOT in interactive mode, print the exception...
      traceback.print_exception(type, value, tb)
      print
      # ...then start the debugger in post-mortem mode.
      ipdb.pm()
sys.excepthook = info

It will start ipdb automatically in case of any exception on command line called scripts.

- I use the awesome pdb emacs package for debug interactivelly during bigger bug hunts (Also for dev too... It's very a nice tool)

- Buutt... I still find the "print dance" to be my first-to-use quick tool.

edit: Fixed pasted code

lewaldman··on Why open-office layouts are bad for employees, bosses, and productivity
I heartdly disagree... And Joel also :P

"Here's the simple algebra. Let's say (as the evidence seems to suggest) that if we interrupt a programmer, even for a minute, we're really blowing away 15 minutes of productivity. For this example, lets put two programmers, Jeff and Mutt, in open cubicles next to each other in a standard Dilbert veal-fattening farm. Mutt can't remember the name of the Unicode version of the strcpy function. He could look it up, which takes 30 seconds, or he could ask Jeff, which takes 15 seconds. Since he's sitting right next to Jeff, he asks Jeff. Jeff gets distracted and loses 15 minutes of productivity (to save Mutt 15 seconds).

Now let's move them into separate offices with walls and doors. Now when Mutt can't remember the name of that function, he could look it up, which still takes 30 seconds, or he could ask Jeff, which now takes 45 seconds and involves standing up (not an easy task given the average physical fitness of programmers!). So he looks it up. So now Mutt loses 30 seconds of productivity, but we save 15 minutes for Jeff. Ahhh!"

lewaldman··on Why I Will Never Go Back to the United States
> 60% of Israeli Jews are from Arab countries, or their parents and grandparents were, and they are very similar in appearance to Arabs

Sorry, but you are wrong regarding the impossibility of do a "race" profiling. I'm a Jew and lived for 6 year in Israel. You can spot in a fraction of a second an arab jew from an arab muslin, from an arab christian.

They can look alike phisicaly, but the behavior, cloths, accents, body expression, etc... Are completely diferent.
