Why you don't just... log on Zoom on the correct time and leave it running while you do actual work on another screen/monitor/window?
Eventually they will get to their senses and stop being late.
The main two that helps me with that are to ride my bicycle at least twice per week and to play Jazz jam sessions on a pub nearby.
also... wife + kids + regular family time... all that helps a lot! =)
The deliver guy comes... push the ring... you answer it on your phone and unlocks the box from it.
LOL
I'm a script junkie... So it may be really useful for me to learn about this! =)
For the starter... It only needs one single component to work , my computer!
Puppet/Salt you need a master server (with HA, load balancing, etc...) and a client running on every machine.
This by it self already add an order of magnitude more complexity than using Ansible.
And for Chef... Oh boy... you need a master server, a client running on every node plus a client running on your computer! (really... for me this by itself is already more than enough reason for me to plain refuse working with Chef).
Now... putting this details aside, the way that I use Ansible allows me to use the dynamic inventory feature (so... I don't store actual infra state on the automation) and to create playbooks that act as DevOps helpers if you may...
So... let's say that I need to setup a MongoDB Replicaset... I just call the `playbooks/provision-mongodb-replicaset.yml` playbook with the needed parameters and... the playbook takes care of everything. From the EC2 provisioning till the Hard disks partitioning (up to the RAID setup) going over OS settings, security roles, apps installations, etc..., till it goes, install MongoDB and create the replicaset for me.
All this with a single command from my computer without the need of anything else! =P
(and I have this `provisions-` and `update-` playbooks for everything that we run on my current job + for the things that I set up when freelancing... Including AWS only stuff like VPCs, or OpenVPN + VPC + Peering + etc...)
It's far far far better than anything else... (specially Chef... It's light years ahead of Chef!)
Yeah... I have tmux, all my infras are on Ansible, etc, etc, etc... But there are times where I need to log to several boxes at once and when the time comes this tool is invaluable!
This is solved already... Capitalism makes it work across time.
(What is discovered now will with most certainty be available specie-wide in a couple of decades... and it's accelerating).
"Mastigar" => To chew in pt-br
(Personally... I think this tech is amazing and I can't wait for it to be available worldwide!)
I simply DON'T work for companies that don't let me use a proper *nix based OS on my work computer.
I'm being a MUCH happier human being since I started to use this policy on the early 2000's! =)
Highly recomend it! :)
On my phone everything goes well, but on other computers or on my iPad's Zagg keyboard... It's a mess.
Which component on AWS doesn't have a OpenSource counter-part that you, having the time, knowledge (;P) and time for it, could not implement on your own infrastructure?
Really... It's an honest question from some one that works as Senior AWS architect on a full time job.
The main advantage of it tho, is not the tiling window managing facilities... But the run-or-raise plugin.
It allows you to run (start) or raise (go to the window) of any application with an assigned shortcut.
Mine are: Mod+e - Emacs Mod+u - Browser (Conkeror) Mod+y - Browser (Chromium) Mod+k - Konsole Mod+. - Keepass Mod+x - Pidgin chat window Mod+i - Skype chat window
The choice of shortcuts may seen arbitrary, but I'm a Dvorak user and all the keys are easily accessible.
With this setup, from my editor I'm a Mod+u / Ctrl+g g to a search on google, and from there I'm a Mod+k from my terminal (from where I run tmux... ;P) and a Mod+e from Emacs.
I'm also using a dropdown terminal with another tmux where I have access, from any where on my system just pressing F1, to my MTA (mutt), file manager (mc), IRC (irssi), Music player (cmus) and a root shell.
Honestly... With this setup there is definetly no going back... Every thing on the tips of my fingers... Some shortcut away.
I almost feel part of the machine! :)
If HBO doesn't provide their content, on-demand, on my country, it's not my problem.
Same goes to Walking Dead... Here in Brazil Netflix has it only till season 3... On popcorn time I can watch the last episode, with subtitles, only 2 or 3 days after it's aired.
I'm really willing to pay for content as far as it's available on my country!
The only place where I worked on the last 8 years that I couldn't work remotely is not the kind of place that I would work anymore.
For me these days, if a company doesn't have some remote policy in place (I mean... not full remote, nor once per week, but the option to, sporadically, work from home on a sick day or to be able to do some coding/admin stuff on the road) it automatically flares a red flag as a place that would not be a magical place where I could do the best that I can.
If the place doesn't have the remote-some-times flexibility it's probably a place with bad management practices and an out-dated culture.
Same thing regarding talent pool... Why on earth do you need to smell the emanating creative fumes of your employees every day from across the hall? :P
