level87··on Animal-free egg protein startup Onego Bio is closer to cracking the egg market
I'm pleased to hear that something like this is being developed, anything that will help stop or reduce the unnecessary mistreatment of animals.
level87··on Ask HN: SWEs – Are y'all worried about your jobs?
I already have a trade; I was a furniture maker for 10+ years before changing careers to a more financially stable option...round and round I go.
level87··on Ask HN: Handling offers of free help on side projects
no licence, just a private repo at the moment...
level87··on Ask HN: SWEs – Are y'all worried about your jobs?
As a junior having only started two years ago, I am worried. I am very behind on what I need to know to be valuable beyond creating CRUD apps.

It feels like I need to either have an idea and build it myself or change careers. Perhaps this is overly pessimistic, but the rate at which everything is changing is alarming.

level87··on Zed, a collaborative code editor, is now open source
I love helix, everything just works
level87··on Ask HN: What are your favorite tools?
helix editor
level87··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
Looking forward to reading I Am Pilgrim, thank you.
level87··on Ask HN: What games could you spend a lifetime playing?
Just discovered this, very addictive, thank you for posting!

Are there other similar games?

level87··on Ask HN: Extracting insights from personal knowledge database?
I've found the same thing. Systems like these feel like a one way street that consume time and information and don't give much in return.
level87··on Ask HN: Examples of well designed statistics websites?
https://yougov.co.uk/ is great
level87··on Ask HN: What's the state of the job market in the UK?
My experience is the same, no responses or very late rejections many months after sending the application. Friends are also finding it very difficult.
level87··on Ask HN: Have you done a coding bootcamp?
I completed a boot-camp around two years ago. It was part of the UK Government's apprenticeship scheme. During the course, I interviewed and landed a junior position at an agency. This meant I was paid for my time on the course and was offered a year-long contract. The apprenticeship also required that I complete two written documents along with interviews about my work.

On the whole, it's been a very positive journey.

- The boot-camp spanned three months, it expected all participants to undertake a several months of self-study and interview for a position on the programme

- It was fast paced and covered a lot

- The hands-on experience from the apprenticeship has been priceless

- That said, I'm currently on the hunt for a new position and am finding it quite tough to nail down interviews. I've come to realise that I require and also want a deeper foundational knowledge, rather than just knowing how to employ frameworks like Express/React to build CRUD apps

The boot-camp is called Founders and Coders[0]. I would thoroughly recommended it.

level87··on Reflecting on my failure to build a billion-dollar company (2019)
> "I built Gumroad the weekend I thought up the idea, and launched it early Monday morning on Hacker News."

Being able to build something like this over a weekend is amazing to me.

level87··on Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Technical Info
I used to use his site a lot, never noticed the spoke horizontal rules, very nice.
level87··on Ask HN: Have You Ever Tried to Invert a Binary Tree?
What resources did you use to study?
level87··on Ask HN: Could you share your portfolio site here?
https://cem.al/ - Mine is simple but not helping a lot in terms of getting jobs/interviews
level87··on Lazygit: Simple terminal UI for Git commands
I've been using this a for while now as a replacement for fugitive, since moving from Neovim to Helix. Overall it's great, but I do wish there were some better tutorials for it thou.
level87··on Ask HN: How to become a coder who can design?
I was a designer before learning to code, honestly much like coding, your best bet is to practice; follow some tutorials to get used to the programs, but ultimately creating something you care about will help you improve.

There are no half measures or a specific road-map, there are certain things you need technically but being a creative field you need to find your own way, just got to work at it.

level87··on Ask HN: Are You a Failure?
I did something similar. I spent my 20's and early 30's working as a furniture maker, I loved parts of it but financially it was difficult. When I was younger I spent whole summers coding for fun, all the friends I had at that time are now working at Google and Facebook while I am just getting started again.

I love making things and solving problems, and the medium isn't as important as I once thought. I wish I had realised this earlier and perhaps I would be further along in my career and financially more successful, but life doesn't work like that I guess. I feel like I've done things in reverse as I often read about software engineers romanticising woodwork.

level87··on Vimium – A browser extension that provides Vim-style keyboard controls
I've tried qutebrowser, but always get frustrated with the lack of plugins like adblock.
level87··on Show HN: Hyper minimalist habit tracker for Chrome
Love this, was looking for something similar this morning.
level87··on Show HN: Speki – Flashcards in Terminal
This is great, I find the Anki interface has too much going on and feels quite outdated, will definitely try this instead.
level87··on Ask HN: What's Your Biggest Regret?
I wish I had continued programming after high school, instead I pursued a career as a furniture maker, scraped a living for 10 years, it formed my entire personality which in retrospect was really unhealthy. I also realised too late that everyone around me was being propped up by their rich parents/partners.

Recently changed careers and now happily programming and on my path to being a bit more financially secure. I can now design and make things I want in my spare time, without having to worry about where the money is coming from.

The comment someone made about everyone losing ten years somewhere really resonated with me.

level87··on Ask HN: Coding music playlist to increase code throughput
I like to listen to soundscapes by Endel

They have a bunch of free 45 minute long tracks on YouTube.

level87··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Looks great! has a real teenage engineering aesthetic about it.

Do you have any photographs of the real thing?
