lev99··on Women and the slowing global population
> Basically, some people think men should have a right to abdicate responsibility for a pregnancy at least up to a certain point.

Are there any specific plans for this that are not harmful to the child or society?

lev99··on Women and the slowing global population
In an agricultural society children are an asset. In an industrial or service based economy children are a sacrifice. This has always been my view on why birthrates are declining.
lev99··on Women and the slowing global population
What specific right do you want to give men after the point of conception?
lev99··on Women and the slowing global population
I wish more people held this view. It surely leads to an increased investment in education.
lev99··on Good sleep, good learning, good life (2012)
There are other ways to get an extra 2-3 hrs a day that are not bad for your health. Some ideas.

* Acquire a shorter commute by moving somewhere closer to work, shifting your working hours to avoid rush hour, or working from home.

* Bike to work, to combine commuting and exercise time.

* Hire help with daily chores like lawn work, house cleaning, laundry, and cooking.

* Eat lunch at your desk

lev99··on How Exercise Might “Clean” the Alzheimer's Brain
No matter what disease you are worried about, it seems like you need to follow the same advice in your day to day life: eat better, smoke less, drink less, exercise more, sleep appropriately.
lev99··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Demonoid, a private torrent tracker.

It had a wide range of quality files and the enforced ratio kept seeders around.

lev99··on Air pollution linked to “huge” reduction in intelligence
The argument for public transportation is not dead wrong nor impeding progress. Expanding bus systems is something communities can do today in order to reduce their carbon footprint and their traffic levels.
lev99··on Air pollution linked to “huge” reduction in intelligence
How will pollution be solved by de-urbanization?

Urban citizens have better access to low carbon transportation (Walking, Biking, Mass Transit).

Urban citizens are easier to reach in many last mile problems. Power lines can be shared by more users. Less network cable needs to be laid per user. Fewer miles of water pipes are required.

Apartments common in urban areas are more fuel efficient for heating/cooling than stand alone houses commonly seen in suburbs and rural areas.

lev99··on Brave New World Revisited, Revisited
I think BNW's mechanism of control is much more relevant than 1984's. In BNW the mechanism for control is the carrot, not the stick. In the west we are definitely using the carrot.
lev99··on New York Times app autoplays video ads on articles even with paid subscription
The people that can afford to pay and do not is a less valuable population than the people that can afford to pay and do.

Edit: valuable from an advertisement point of view.

lev99··on The Reason We Haven’t Directly Detected Dark Matter
It's an observation that fits our theoretical models when dark matter is assumed.

It's indirect proof. The indirect proof is so overwhelming strong that any rational person will concluded with reasonable certainty that dark matter is real.

Directly detecting a dark matter particle will give us more data than "dark matter is real".

lev99··on Globally, Almost Four Out of Ten Music Consumers Are Pirates
I don't draw such a strong lines between physical and virtual items.

Even in the case where you buy a song, you don't have limitless rights to it. It would be illegal, for example, to buy a CD and use a song from that CD in a television commercial. You don't own the song, you are purchasing the right to replay the song in some situations. DRM purchases and streaming services are remarkably similar deals.

lev99··on Globally, Almost Four Out of Ten Music Consumers Are Pirates
Why do you feel a strong desire for ownership?

I enjoy going to art museums and experiencing visual art, but I never experienced the inclination to purchase any of it. Music to me is a lot like that.

lev99··on As Chinese investment pours into the EU, the Europeans are beginning to worry
Europe has a long history of warfare that seemed to have halted around the NATO. I think the presence of a strong military alliance and the presence of peace have a high probability of being connected.
lev99··on As Chinese investment pours into the EU, the Europeans are beginning to worry
Most of the bases were well welcomed during the cold war. NATO has probably done just as much to insure peace inside it's countries as the EU has.

Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen talks a lot about how whitewashed, and classist history text books are, and why that is the case.

A summary of the book is that history textbooks have a tendency to avoid showing anything negative done by great American historical figures because they are held up as heroes for people in imitate. There is a narrative of constant progress that is told in the textbooks that does not match with actual history. History textbooks avoid talking about class struggles altogether, because if they did they would be labeled as Marxist. There is a general avoidance of discussing immoral foreign policy. The book backs up these claims by citing many popular textbooks and how they cover, or don't cover, historical events.

(The following summary of the book is my own understanding of the book's opinions and not necessarily my own. I haven't studied history enough to hold my own opinion.)

lev99··on The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate Amazon and Apple
The bad actors could be brought to trial in a United States court, which is a level of deterrent not included in offshore manufacturing. If a US manufacturer was found selling tampered chips then the company itself could be held liable. This would create a general pressure to increase onsight security.

There are other benefits to us based manufacturing, but you only brought up the crime aspect so I will leave the other benefits unsaid.

lev99··on Scientists are looking for ways to put the simulation hypothesis to the test
It's impossible to prove, but empirical evidence could improve the theory.
lev99··on Scientists are looking for ways to put the simulation hypothesis to the test
Everyone is not making that assumption. Asking if photona behaves more predictably while not one is watching doesn't assume there is light in the parent universe. Similarly the article opens up the question that the root universe might have infinite computing power! That would be a very different universe indeed.

I've meet people living in their office for a period of weeks/months. It might technically be against zoning laws, but it happens frequently.

lev99··on When Blockbuster Video Tried Burning Game Cartridges on Demand
High profile / high demand games actually were a bigger problem than your stating. However this solves other problems.

Reduced floor space usage. Better breath of inventory. Better customer service, you'll always have every title in stock.

lev99··on Apple says it’s tracking your calls and emails to ‘prevent fraud’
This sounds like something they should be doing. If someone used a tool or service I provided to commit fraud I would take it as a personal failing.

Privacy and security are the reasons I moved from Android to iOS four years ago. After reading the details this sounds like such a minor collection of data that it doesn't bother me.

lev99··on Germany launches world's first hydrogen-powered train
Just compare hydrogen cars with electric cars and you'll see why people prefer electric. CA has 33 hydrogen refueling stations, so many people in CA could get by with one.
lev99··on Every Weekend Should Be a 3-Day Weekend (2015)
If someone is overworked their productivity decreases. If you start cutting hours their productivity will increase up to a point, when they become underworked.

What's the right amount of worked? You cannot keep cutting hours and expect productivity to go up indefinitely.

In addition, the right number of hours probably has some variability among the population. I'm very much against a one sized fits all amount work environment.
