lev99··on China is angered by Apple's iPhone event mentioning Taiwan
The Republic of China was in control of Taiwan when they lost the Chinese Civil War to The Communist Party of China.

When the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan they did not have to file for asylum or apply for a Visa. Taiwan was part of China. The Communist Party is declaring when they won the civil war they gained control over all of China, including Taiwan.

This is the narrative for Taiwan not having sovereignty, and not necessary my own views.

lev99··on What Most Remote Companies Don’t Tell You About Remote Work
> But the routine was actually better for me. Though I hate commuting, having a regular sleep/work schedule, responsibilities, and stability seems to have made me a better human being.

I work remotely and have a regular sleep/work schedule and regular work responsibilities. If your prioritize these things, and choose the company you work with carefully, you can have a work/life balance while working from home.

lev99··on Amazon's Bezos Launches $2B Fund to Help the Homeless
Increasing home prices in Seattle, where the median rent is $2,400 [0]. By bringing in people from out of state with high salaries Amazon is making the housing market in Seattle much more expensive as more people compete for a mostly static stock of housing. Zoning laws, mandatory parking, improved public transportation, affordable housing regulations, and new development could all improve the current situation so local and state governments play a role, but it would be naive to assume the largest private employer in the region didn't play a role in creating the current situation either.

Surely game scores are posted in a highschool bulletin, or a team could have a twitter/facebook/Instagram account to announce scores/highlights.
lev99··on A rogue Romanian economist legally gamed the lottery
Your EV numbers are high.

If the EV was really significantly above 1.0 (say 1.5) then everyone would buy a lot of lotto tickets. It would be simple arbitrage. In reality all of those people buying extra tickets (because of the high perceived EV) would mean a higher chance of splitting the pot. Splitting the pot would reduce the real return by 1/2 for every person that purchased a ticket.

While that sounds really cool, it would also be a very expensive vehicle. Paying two strong men and renting a uhaul is usually how I handle moving big heavy things for the occasional time I need to.

lev99··on Clayton Christensen: Half of U.S. colleges will be bankrupt in 10 to 15 years
> The big question is, given a particular student, will they do better with a college education?

Maybe, it's really hard to measure. I suspect a good not great college is a very good way to improve a particular person's life, but not the absolute optimal use of four years and about $30,000.

While this question is really important for individuals to ask, I don't think this question is going to destroy institutions of higher learning. I think a lot of people will still take the relatively safe path of completing a four year degree.

> They won't be replaced by a disruptor, they will just no longer be able to crank out mediocre educational product to people who now realize that a Bachelor of Something Or Other from Podunk U isn't actually a ticket to the middle class.

A lot of people say this, but a College Education has an excellent ROI when you look at median earnings of college graduates vs median earnings of high school graduates.

Some majors such as accounting and engineering offer even better ROIs. Some entire industries, such as Education, are almost entirely blocked to someone without a college degree. Lifelong earning numbers are correlation and not causation. We've all meet great engineers that did not complete college. Still, as long as college graduates are out earning high school graduates by significant amounts colleges will not have to worry about attracting new students.

lev99··on Inside the Trump Administration’s Secret War on Weed
The Trump Administration has taken one of the most liberal positions on cannabis of any Republican president ever.

His stated positions on supporting states with medical laws, and his complete absence of federal raids on people following state cannabis laws, is very good for a republican president.

lev99··on Inside the Trump Administration’s Secret War on Weed
The article describes the desire for a media campaign against cannabis more than a war.

It's okay if the goverment makes statements about cannabis in a negative light. DOT talks about the dangers of driving. CDC talks about the dangers of vaping. The truth is cannabis isn't 100% harmless, and it's probably a good thing if our society has someone looking into the risks of this large social change we made.

lev99··on Stop Don't blindly take that coding challenge
> Employers already have most of the power in this relationship

I feel like it's the exact opposite.

I once was at a team where a coworker left. He was one of two developers working on a subsystem. The subsystem was highly valued by the company because it would result in faster payments and less labor in processing payments. Even though they replaced him with another developer the project still took 1.75x longer to complete compared to the previous pace.

When a developer replaces a company they continue to pay the same green money. When a company replaces a developer it can take months or years to retrain him with institutional knowledge. The asymmetry gives developers more power in the relationship.

lev99··on Clicker Diet: Tracking Diet with Tally Counter
I think it's probably better to train yourself to accurately estimate the calories in food than it is to assign food to clicks for two reasons. One, it's easier to measure calories in vs calories out if you use the same units for both. Two, adjusting the unit you are measuring (clicks vs calories) doesn't solve the problem of bad estimates. My calorie estimates are rarely off by the same percentage, often times my estimates on certain food will be off by 50% whole other food is spot on. 50% could be a choicing a few clicks less on certain high calorie foods causing your counting to be inaccurate.

I did not feel like shit when cold turkey stopping a 4 year daily habit of MJ.

I know it's highly anecdotal, but I'm very thankful I spent those four years smoking cannabis instead of drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or taking prescription pills.

lev99··on Just Read the Book Already
Dune and A Song of Ice & Fire use very different narrative techniques.

In Dune most of the narration follows a protagonist that navigates the world. In A Song of Ice & Fire there is not a single protagonist. There are multiple characters that are elevated to the same level of importance. Covering world events from each point of view requires more pages. Having multiple characters that are the same level of importance is one of the hallmarks of the series. When starting to read the series a person is usually told that they will not be able to predict who will die. This is a key element of the story telling process.

A Song of Ice and Fire has more named minor characters and a wider range of named minor characters. In my opinion this makes the world more rich and represents a deep understanding of the entire society. Dune deals primarily (99% or more) with aristocrats and their servants/warriors. A Song of Ice and Fire will talk about everyone from Kings to poor fisherman.

lev99··on Just Read the Book Already
My reading habits suspended during college for skim culture, and rebounded every break from school and fully recovered after graduation.
lev99··on More Americans report near-constant cannabis use
It's a Brave New World (by Aldous Huxley) reference. It's worth reading if you haven't.

EDIT: In the book Huxley imagines a new society. One of the hallmarks of the society is there is no pain or suffering. This is accomplished in part by Soma, a fictional drug perhaps best described as a no negative side effect tranquilizer or opiate.

EDIT EDIT: The society also removes almost all major sources of pain. A person is chemically engineered (was written before the discovery of DNA) to be happy with their job and position in life since conception. There are no parents. There is sex but no romantic love. In avoiding pain almost all the happiness in the society is superficial, coming from sex, drugs and movies. They might be happy, in the most shallow meaning of the word, but there is clearly no joy.

> Caffeine pills & powder are far more dangerous. It is very easy to overdose on them, and death is not out of the question. It still isn't common.

Caffeine pills usually come in 200mg. Caffeine has an LD50 of about 200mg/kg of body mass. In US units a 150lb person would have to consume 68 caffeine pills to reach LD50 levels.

lev99··on My dad’s resume and skills from 1980
Maybe, it really would require a lot of research to determine if one of the two purposed situations are correct.

I wrote my comment to inspire people to look at jobs they normally wouldn't, because I believe applying for a wide range of jobs is a good strategy for learning about the labor market.

lev99··on My dad’s resume and skills from 1980
Hiring and firing come at a nonzero cost, just like whiteboard interviews.

If ten people apply for a position and their resumes all look good the company needs some way to determine who to hire.
