lemonspat··on Self-driving vehicles against human drivers: Equal safety is far from enough
Computers might not get distracted, but have many other problems. And I assure you a computer can still focus on the wrong thing and have blind spots.

lemonspat··on Sunsetting Blender Network in 2021
This is sad to see that the professional network is being sunset. I hope someone picks up the torch. Instead of shutting down all the data on the hard drives, perhaps there is relevant data that can be shared?

Over a decade ago, a friend introduced me to Blender and I was stunned such an incredible software was free! I wanted to go into 3d animation and build video games, but my career plans changed. I'm happy with what I do, but sometimes I wish I spent my days drawing.

Thank you to the Blender team for their hard work and inspiring minds!

Edit: I know Blender is not shutting down. I was commenting on the Blender Network

lemonspat··on Amazon Destroys the Intellectual Justifications for Capitalism
It does have bearing. Walmart has twice the revenue, and has a grocery monopoly in “43 metropolitan areas and 160 smaller markets”. Walmart put Main Street out of business in most small towns decades ago

> They can spend that, and only that. They get a set amount of time on all TV stations.

That’s naive. Media is owned by a few folks. There’s nothing to stop Murdoch from broadcasting/publishing the names of only the person that Murdoch wants to win. And you’ll never hear about the little Green Party lady that YOU want to win, and you can’t donate to help her out.

You can cap TV time for funded spots, but the talking heads on radio and TV will just keep mentioning how great Candidate Y is.

lemonspat··on More than 73% of American adults are overweight or obese
> but it is very destructive and unhelpful in the long run.

If the United States ever moves to a public-funded healthcare regime, it will also be more expensive and destructive to care for from a government budget perspective.

lemonspat··on Do You Love Me? [video]
A simple test shows this isn't more realistic. Gravity during the jumps are off, and people walking upstairs is odd. It looks like it was filmed in realtime.

lemonspat··on Magician-turned-mathematician uncovers bias in coin flipping (2004)
> Diaconis himself has trained his thumb to flip a coin and make it come up heads 10 out of 10 times.

I had better dexterity as a child, and after hours I was able to flip a coin to 'heads' about 8/10 of the time. Same position, same muscle reflex, same results. I would proudly show my family my skill

Over time, I lost interest and the skill

lemonspat··on Web Authentication Methods Compared
>> solve a problem that doesn't exist, which is that storing and retrieving user sessions on the server is burdensome, even though it's one of the least expensive computations you can make on a server.

I've never heard anyone say that's the problem, rather the issue is the network latency + dependency of hitting a cache/database for every future request. It's not a problem for everyone's apps, but pretending it's never a problem for anyone is shortsighted. Session cookies are just fine for many/most apps, and JWTs add new problems, so I dont recommend them. YMMV

lemonspat··on Evolving Container Security with Linux User Namespaces
Thanks for offering to answer questions! I have a question (but haven't finished reading it yet, so maybe the answer is in here). The article starts by saying that Titus is your orchestration engine but later says you're moving to Kubernetes. Are you completely moving off of Titus, or running Titus within/parallel to K8?

lemonspat··on Top Retractions of 2020
> Any shame you want to should on the authors of that chapter. Why are you so afraid of scientists being corrected here? We have enough bad science

You should redirect that shame to the authors listed on this page. Why are you so afraid of scientists being corrected here? Scientists are human and get things wrong. Just like a coding bug, bad science needs to be corrected. So I disagree. What's dangerous about pointing out fault with this example?

> 6 In the category of “not retracted but should never have been published,” we’ll offer up this book chapter, which claims that the virus behind the COVID-19 pandemic hitched a ride to Earth on a meteorite.

lemonspat··on Sustained, high-fidelity quantum teleportation
That was a very clear explanation, thank you. So all my grand ideas about how quantum communication might work are now sadly dead

lemonspat··on I Have Resigned from the Google AMP Advisory Committee

lemonspat··on Sustained, high-fidelity quantum teleportation
I think OP is asking, can you entangle, measure, discuss, and then go travel to another galaxy with real time communications?

Edit: or can the communication only happen once and then you need to remeasure over classic communication?

lemonspat··on Sustained, high-fidelity quantum teleportation
that page links to the “Illinois Express Quantum Network”, and is fascinating. They’re trying to build a Q-MAN from three different Q-LANs in metro Chicago as an experiment??! This is cool!
