legolas2412··on A Worsening Culture War
The top 1% by income pay more, the top 1% by wealth, probably not
legolas2412··on Indian government blocks access to forty-three mobile apps
One, i for one would not welcome having an ethno-centric authoritarian state spying on me. I certainly wouldn't be happy if say the Nazis Germany or the stasi were spying in india. Your response is very similar to "I've got nothing to hide" argument for government spying.

Second, just because lalamove didn't do anything ontoward for you, doesn't mean that chinese companies don't spy on anyone. Maybe you should look at the rich history of china's industrial espionage, or how US and Soviet Russia spied on each other during the cold war.

Third, this is part of a economic and trade war against china. Maybe you should read about how an authoritarian state works, and how subjugated people get treated by oppressors. Go look at tibet, taiwan, Hong Kong, uyghur, ww2 poland etc etc.

I'll add a final point. I have found most such arguments made by people who hate the current indian government, which is indeed a bad one. But people are so hell bent on opposing the government that they even speak positives of entities that are against india, like china. Food for thought for you, what would your reaction be if it was the indian government doing similar things of industrial espionage, economic war, and spying. Would you say that modi was welcome to see that you ordered furniture from ikea?

The truth is that somehow we are conditioned to believe that only income deserves taxation. We have under-taxed wealth so much that there needs to be some equalization.

Trying to understand logic. What is a model, and how does it differ from theory?

For specific example, what is a model of ZFC? Is it just another theory, one which includes ZFC and few more axioms? Why not call it a derived theory or a subset theory?

legolas2412··on Honda claims it will launch the first Level 3 autonomous production car in March

legolas2412··on Ok Google: please publish your DKIM secret keys
Sure, you raise very important points. I just found it weird that NYPost was happy just releasing the emails and not the DKIM, and when one was validated, it received literally no coverage. I thought it might catch steam after the election, but the literal silence is surprising to me.

I am not insinuating any wrongdoing from anyone, just bringing it to your attention, as you claimed to not know about it.

legolas2412··on Ok Google: please publish your DKIM secret keys
I saw this news (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/cybersecurity-expert...) a few days before the election. There is also a github repo.

I am not sure why the DKIM for all emails were not released, or why this did not catch more media coverage by other news organizations I consider more reliable (like NYT).

legolas2412··on Honda claims it will launch the first Level 3 autonomous production car in March
The problem is many of the "self-driving cars" are basically automatic braking and lane keeping assists. Add in a bit of marketing, and suddenly it is an AGI that would herald new wave of automation
legolas2412··on Honda claims it will launch the first Level 3 autonomous production car in March
From this article (https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2020/11/11/honda-...): "Most importantly, they allow you to take all attention off the road — you can do e-mail or read a book, and do not have to watch the road. When traffic opens up again, they alert you and you start driving. "

It looks like they have level 4 and are calling it level 3?

legolas2412··on Proponent of using IQ tests to screen immigrants named to senior NIST post
H1b is a temporary visa.

USA does not have high skilled immigrant friendly policies at all. Out of roughly 500k green cards, only 15k are for high skilled immigration. Most (450k) are for family immigration, 50k for diversity visas (random lotteries for citizens of non-big countries), and 8k investor visas (visas for sale basically).

legolas2412··on Covid vaccine: First ‘milestone’ vaccine offers 90% protection
I am sure I misunderstood something, but what does that 80% mean, and how does it differ from "the data we currently have shows that one shot of this vaccine is not likely to convey a decent amount of protection."?

legolas2412··on Twitter has applied warning labels to 37% of Trump's tweets since polls closed
Russian interfered via hacking emails, leaking them, polarizing voters by advertisement (only worth 100k$ though), and maybe even leaking a fake steele dossier.

But no american has been even indicted of collusion with russia, from what I understand. So trump campaign did not work with russia, even if russia put in efforts that helped trump

legolas2412··on Facebook Shuts Down ‘Stop the Steal’ Group
You seem to be implying that the divide is not rural or urban, but whites vs blacks, or rural whites vs everyone else.

Seems to be away from the topic right? There is half the country supporting a candidate like trump because they are disgruntled of the other candidates. That was the point, and you don't get to wash your hands off the fact that the country is divided.

legolas2412··on Facebook Shuts Down ‘Stop the Steal’ Group
griffoa was arguing that people have lost trust in the system. Whether is it organically arosen from disagreement with the opposite side, or disinformation from political propaganda is a separate topic. It does not change the fact that america is a divided country where the rural half has lost trust in the urban half of the country.
legolas2412··on US govt ups minimum H-1B tech salaries to $208,000 a year
> we should encourage immigration through our higher-education system (and we have been doing so for decades)

Having gone through the numbers just yesterday, I was very surprised. So, here's the correction for you. No, america does not encourage immigration through education and subsequent employment. Out of roughly 550k green cards per year, only around 15k are for educated immigrants coming through employment categories (eb1,2,3).

For comparison, there are around 50k diversity visas given in lotteries, and 8k investors visas given out to anyone willing to buy a green card.

legolas2412··on The self-driving car is a red herring
You call them realists, I call them misleading marketers.

The term to use is driverless. Gives the correct idea of what users imagine. All thsi "self-driving" or FSD is just driver assistance given more capability with no regards to safety.

legolas2412··on Yann LeCun on GPT-3
And that is why i dislike the term "self-driving".

It makes people think "driverless", which "full self-driving" is not.

legolas2412··on I am an Uighur who faced China’s concentration camps
It's even more bizzare if you look at the original claim.

"China isn't committing a genocide like the Nazis, because they could just shoot everyone. But, the Nazis didn't do it either, so the Nazis weren't committing genocide like those damn Nazis either"

Bizzare argument.

I believe they should be treated as a common utility, because this is what they are because of network effects.

In that case, I think they would be under obligation to not silence people like this.

legolas2412··on Twitter and Facebook's action over Joe Biden article reignites bias claims
Maybe you are part of the group suppressing speech of the oppressed? How can there be censorship and everyone be happy?
legolas2412··on Twitter and Facebook's action over Joe Biden article reignites bias claims
If the censorship is always on the right side of history, then we would definitely know instances of "thanks a lot for the censorship".
legolas2412··on Twitter and Facebook's action over Joe Biden article reignites bias claims
> As other have mentioned, I think however plausible that conception of speech was then, it's utterly ignorant of the problems we're facing today

I think it is the exact opposite. Maybe I have read too many dystopian novels like fahrenheit 451, or 1984, or read too much about Chinese govt's control of its population, but I feel that modern technology has allowed too much censorship power in hands of not just the govt, but a few corporations. And it is extremely important that we do not compromise on free speech now.
