Something about me does not want to trust a webmail host who has an ad running on their front page reading "date rape appreciation station." This appalling lack of professionalism makes the entire service suspect to me.

edit: I would like to thank all the misogynists in this thread voting this down. Thanks for keeping tech a welcoming place for women and victims of assault!

legodt··on The Middle Class Can't Afford to Live in Cities Anymore
But what happens when very few of those professionals can afford to live in the big ones?

I don't know where you live or how hypothetically fucked you are, but it isn't too late to give a little of your time to get involved in local politics and fight back! No guilting or judgement, just trying to keep a positive mood as a lot of times these "escape plans" don't work out for various reasons
legodt··on The Middle Class Can't Afford to Live in Cities Anymore
But a lot of those professions can't afford rent inside the city and are forced into unwieldly commutes and lose out on the benefits of being in a city
legodt··on The Middle Class Can't Afford to Live in Cities Anymore
Anything in fashion, design, media, etc. Fields that have global distribution for creative work at large scale is what I'm familiar with and unless you are willing to work for a smaller company (I.e. not large consultancy or high profile work), you have to be in a major urban center.
legodt··on In 2017, I’m going to stop watching the news
In the US and Europe now is a very dangerous time to give up on news. Cables news should be dropped, but I'm seeing in the comments here a few people ardently against all news. Considering that a white nationalist backed candidate is in-office with full party support starting this year, ignoring the news is a luxury only affordable to the rich white male class. Everybody else is affected.
legodt··on The Middle Class Can't Afford to Live in Cities Anymore
Yes, but those cities don't have the same job markets. Not everybody is a coder or an engineer with skills in high demand in non-metropolitan areas
legodt··on The Middle Class Can't Afford to Live in Cities Anymore
Where are we supposed to work then?
legodt··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
Yes, but all of my nice audio equipment isn't going to magically convert to Bluetooth.
legodt··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
No, it may not be the end-all, but it certainly is almost all of it
legodt··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
Bad comparison, memory cards are a clear need (gotta have more storage space) and are not responses to poor design decisions (gotta counteract a port I use every day being taken away).
legodt··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
Why are people so desperate to defend this clearly user hostile move? A dongle is a poor user experience and continues to degrade user experience over time. The fact that there was a market demand for a "cool" keychain shows how unnecessary the removal of the jack was. Believe it or not, people enjoy using things without unnecessary accessories that you have to keep track of and swap around

>iTunes is slowly degrading

That is incredibly generous considering the past decade of itunes, especially for Windows users. So much bad code, legacy cruft, and inconsistent UI decisions

legodt··on Why are browsers so slow?
The issue appears to have resolved itself with a fresh install. I could not replicate the behavior in the nightly, and when I reinstalled the main release it did not manifest again either. Sorry to not be a better help, I'm trying to wrap my head around it...
legodt··on An Open Letter to the Democratic National Committee from a Rural Democrat
I agree with most of the bulleted points on your list (automation, not free trade killed most jobs), but for transgendered Americans, using the bathroom is far from a luxury. It's a constant threat, it's fear of being beaten to a pulp or murdered. Calling the ability to safely use a public restroom without threat of violence is extremely privileged on your part and it costs a lot less to protect these people than fix those HUGE problems you listed. There is no good reason to ignore helping these people just because there are larger, systemic problems to address, kind of a false dichotomy you set up there. I don't want to throw around an accusation that you are being cryptotransphobic with this, but please do re-examine your privilige and ask yourself why you are conflating basic safety for transgendered people and "urban elitism," ESPECIALLY because trans members of our society are most likely on the fringes or in the lower class.

There is also another way to look at this that doesn't involve social justice and privilege examination. The problems you listed require ACTIVE solutions. Big, active solutions. The kind of solutions the Democratic party, and this really pains me to say, is too much of a clusterfuck right now to deal with given their internal struggles and, yknow, the entirely red government. Now, this red government on local levels as been aggressively targeting LGBTQ communities and trying to dehumanize them and strip them of their rights and safeties. The republicans are taking first swing at this, so all the Dems have to do is create REACTIVE solutions, which is a helluva lot faster and easier to do. Trans people under attack in public? REACT with legislation to protect them and fight to repeal legislation meant to attack them. These are solutions that the party is able to do, so it is what they are publicizing and what is being covered and discussed. Now that Republicans control all of government, there really isn't much for the left to do at all on the federal level, so the most they can fight for during the next four years is protecting civil liberties under an openly homophobic and LGBTQ hostile government.

legodt··on An Open Letter to the Democratic National Committee from a Rural Democrat
You say that like the two platforms can't co-exist. I agree with what you are saying overall, the American democratic party has abandoned a lot of people, but with the transgender bathroom issue, that came up because these people were under attack and threat of violence just for existing publically. This is why the issue felt so large and was such a rush priority since empowered socially regressive states were rushing legislation to allow discrimination and implicitly support attacks on these groups. I just want to state this for clarity and posterity, not detract from your overall point which I very much agree with.
legodt··on An Open Letter to the Democratic National Committee from a Rural Democrat
Naw my guy, the failures of the American left are rooted in its inability to be a party of the working class. Every lost election sees the policy of the Democrats moving further and further to the right, leading to a platform that masquerades as progressive but actually alienates and abandons working class Americans because it isn't actually committed to them. Bernie was the first step (although many argue he didn't go far enough), but since the us Democratic party is held by the same corporate reins as the Republican party, he wasn't given a fair chance. If you look at other developed countries, even America with its most blue government is still to the right of center on economics.
legodt··on Silicon Valley's prosperity paradox: 76000 millionaires can't fix local poverty
Charity is most definitely a tool to reinforce the status quo. It's not that charity is bad, but it is less good. Here is a fantastic article on the topic: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2015/08/peter-singer-charity-effe...

Fellow commentors, please know that this is a common phrase used to denigrate black people receiving government assistance.

Sure, I'd be more than happy to try breaking this down, I'm going to try a nightly build now as other users have suggested and see how it feels
legodt··on Why are browsers so slow?
My Firefox instance has recently picked up the nasty habit of every time I move to a different tab, the web area is white save for a spinning grey loading icon in the center for a good half second. I've never seen anything like this before recently and it's a real bummer on speed

legodt··on Tim Cook assures employees that Apple is committed to the Mac
"Cook cites the far better performance of desktop computers, including screen sizes, memory, storage and more variety in I/O"

A bold statement considering that the only I/O on the current iMac is 4x USB, 2x thunderbolt, Ethernet, SD card, and a 1/8 jack- a collection of ports bested by all but the most anemic computers

Edit: fixed port thanks to HillaryBriss. I was actually too generous in my original listing of ports

legodt··on Insurance Policies on Slaves: New York Life’s Complicated Past
How about a country where a president is elected after a long campaign of denigrating immigrants, women, and people of color? A country where a movement needs to exist that states that black lives matter. A country where people will defend a cop who kills unarmed black people and is cleared of all wrong doing. A country that discriminates against hiring, providing housing opportunities for, and passing legislation to protect groups of people that start out behind because decades of racism has kept them out of job centers, meaningful employment, and economic stability.

Visit the south some time, talk to some black people that aren't as wealthy as you are, please just go out and get some perspective. I've always liked cornel west's (if you haven't heard of him, do yourself a favor and look him up! He's a brilliant thinker and a lot of fun to read) reading that leaving the conversation on race alone is counterproductive neoliberal thinking and that you need to step back and look at all factors, including class, emplyoment, the penal system, war etc. What you will find is that a lot of these oppressive factors tie back to race, have histories in discrimination, or have magnified consequences for people of color. This does not discount that there are a lot of white people struggling with the same circumstances, but it helps frame and contextualize how these issues play into race.

America is the land where you can fly a flag of slavery and excuse yourself under the false guise of "heritage," but in the national conversation when people want to talk about how this heritage is inherently tied to hate, racists get up in arms.

Sorry this was a huge ramble, key takeaways are

1. Get outside your filter bubble

2. Read prominent black voices in philosohpy

3. Never stop learning

For example, if you want to read further than cornel west, maybe check out some lectures from Bell hooks and learn how these issues of class and race tie into gender and identity. It's a big world out there, take it all in!

Although their views may be seen as rephrensible from my perspective I still see their value as contributors to this site considering most topics that they are contributing to discussion on won't bring up these issues
legodt··on Facebook’s internal rules of deletion
I never called for censoring groups, I was just outlining the problems faced here. If you read back up to parent, what I'm trying to get at is saying that despite HM harboring these regressive actors, at no point are they mobilizing or openly attacking others, so Facebook style content removal or moderation does not cross-apply here. I think we may be more on the same page than you realize
legodt··on Facebook’s internal rules of deletion
Thanks for joining the conversation. I wanted to steer my comment a little bit more to the last point you made about how racism and misoginy, no matter how subtle, does create a toxic culture which silences or intimidates others, but saying that REALLY riles up the "freeze peach" crowd here and I was concerned that making such a statement in an already upsetting comment would get me hit with the flaghammer. More to the topic at hand (and the parent comment), this is about the role of a site making active and aggressive steps to remove content or clamp down on the posting of content that is focused on organizing and attacking outgroups openly, something that does not occur here on HN. You are going to get comments colored with implicit racism or gendered bias, but nobody is grabbing pitchforks to intentionally attack anyone here.

HN, despite carrying all of the more socially regressive actors of the meatspace tech community is remarkably civil and kind

legodt··on MakerBot's bold bet that 3D printers would become common
3d printing might not have had the huge impact expected for it in the consumer world, but in the professional world printing is hugely important. Getting a physical model of your cad file overnight from a black box at your desk or in your model shop is a workflow game changer. Make an ergonomic change to your grip? Test it out almost immediately. Manufacturer needs you to change the draft on your shell? Print it first before sending it out and make sure everything still fits. When previously you had to make engineering accuracy models all day in the shop or get a part made by a small run manufacturer, now prototyping and testing variations from cad can all be done in house. Consumers might not be directly benefiting from the advent of democratized 3d printers, but they are benefiting in the gains of efficiency at the firms designing their goods
