leeroyjenkins11··on New Zealand bans young people from buying cigarettes for life
Not op, but the fact that they are expanding MAID(euthanasia) to non terminal patients and people in general. They had a case where a Soldier called the I believe the VA for PTSD and was offered euthanasia as an option. Then there was a Paralympian who was asking for a ramp to be put at her house, they couldn't do that but they offered her MAID as an option. They also plan to loosen the reqs to allow mentally handicapped people to apply.

Health Canada says that starting March 17 next year, “people with a mental illness as their sole underlying medical condition will have access to MAID if they meet all of the eligibility requirements and the practitioners fulfill the safeguards that are put in place for this group of people.”

leeroyjenkins11··on Artificial womb facility concept for 30k babies per year
Talk about dystopian. This is some Brave New World stuff. Can we look at the separation of human biology/human nature and ask ourselves what happens when we cut out the reason of human existence for the history of humanity, or even the drive of every living organism to procreate?

There are things that happen to women when they grow and give birth to children. What happens when we remove that? And will governments "fix" the human depopulation crisis the by growing children in vats and having the state raise them?

leeroyjenkins11··on Does watching pornography cause erectile dysfunction?
But are there any real blocks to stopping underaged people from having access to adult content? Unless parents are tech savvy enough to get content controls, which even then suck. Like the parental controls for TMobile has no granularity, Comcast only allows basic filtering on the router level, and very little in logging and alerting.

I feel like this is in keeping with regulation in the real world. A kid needs an id to buy adult magazines, a person needs to be involved selling that item. With the internet, where are those societal safety's? It doesn't stop all, but it would handle most.

leeroyjenkins11··on Britain is sleepwalking into censorship?
Honestly, I think that's one good thing. I believe that isp's should provide more content controls and allow fine grained controls for account owners to block content in categories. And they should have at least adult content blocked by default with an opt out.

It's insane to me that parents have to be network admins to be able to make even do basic content filtering for their children in the US.

leeroyjenkins11··on EFF Takes a Stance: San Francisco Shouldn’t Arm Robots
Probably because cops don't want to show up to calls where they may have to use lethal force and possibly have their lives destroyed and decisions Monday morning QBd.

Definitely a bad idea though, I don't like the idea of a guy in a suit being able to hit a button. You also don't need to convince a robot to violate my rights and put themselves in danger while doing it.

leeroyjenkins11··on Being fatter than Homer Simpson
Yes, I think a key for stopping that is making sure you weight yourself once a week at least. It's much easier to catch the weight creeping up and manage it when it's 5 pounds and not 15.
leeroyjenkins11··on Narcissistic Collapse
Delete the gym, hit the lawyer, facebook up.
leeroyjenkins11··on FTX US Donated $1M to a Super-Pac Aligned with Mitch McConnell in October
Oh, come on.

Mr. Bankman-Fried was the No. 2 overall top donor to Democrats in the election cycle, only behind George Soros, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Mr. Salame was the No. 11 overall donor to Republicans.

And also look at the names of the candidates too, on both sides.

leeroyjenkins11··on What If We Replace Guns and Bullets with Bows and Arrows?
That's usually because hunters are prohibited from using suppressors. Subsonic ammo isn't ideal for big game because you do have a a reduced range and speed. And because of the NFA, every suppressor needs a 200dollar tax stamp and several months of waiting, this also drives up the price of suppressors. In PA they tried to pass a bill to allow deer hunters to hunt with suppressors, but it was voted down because you don't need to know things to vote against something.
leeroyjenkins11··on 1-in-6 managers told to deprioritize hiring white men, 48% diversity over merit
Ahh, so the only way to correct past injustices against a group of people is to unjustly punish people of other groups today.

Wow, that will fix things and won't breed animosity between groups and deepen divisions.

leeroyjenkins11··on Mozilla launches venture fund to fuel responsible tech companies
They gave grants to change master/slave terminology in documentation. After that, I can't donate and assume the won't wizz away my money on some stupid endeavor.
leeroyjenkins11··on Colleges that ditched admission tests find it harder to fairly choose students
Because people like taking down fences without knowing why they are there, because they are of course smarter than everyone who came before them.
leeroyjenkins11··on Nowhere to hide: How a nuclear war would kill you–and almost everyone else
Lol, I love how you go to Murdoch looking over the largest group of people that have said most of humanity isn't needed, that people should eat bugs for the environment, and

“At Davos a few years ago [surveys] showed us that the good news is the elite across the world trust each other more and more,” she said.

“So we can come together and design and do beautiful things together.

“The bad news is that in every single country they were polling, the majority of people trusted their elite less. So we can lead but if people aren’t following we aren’t going to get to where we want to go.”

They definitely have a bunker, and probably feel like a few nukes handles some population issues.

leeroyjenkins11··on Most people on antidepressants don’t need them
So we're the drugs able to help you get past the anxiety enough to figure out what the root was or assist in CBT? I always fear that psych drugs are used to mask the root cause.
leeroyjenkins11··on More U.S. companies charging employees for job training if they quit
You mean when the employee voluntarily agrees to the terms of the contract? I have seen when employees take advantage of job training and then immediately bounce when their contract expires for that. They used 6months of code camp training while being paid, and as soon as they could they left. If those contracts were not allowed, there wouldn't be a company willing to pay for that.

When you sign a lease you usually can't break the lease without penalty.yes, if a company makes up the training costs for in house training, making it astronomical, then that seems like it'd be up for litigation.

leeroyjenkins11··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
I worked my way through and commuted, didn't go to a nice school, 2 years of CC and graduated debt free. Now I'm expected to pay for your debt because you were dumb and got an expensive degree that wasn't worth it? Piss off, I could have had a semester abroad or two, but instead I spent my summers working at Walmart and working construction.
leeroyjenkins11··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
I would say a study done in 2020 is obviously going to have different results than 2010. You have 10 years of difference and changes in how people interact online. You also have different apps that fill certain niches. Shirtless may work on some platforms and not others. Selection by women may have changed because there are so many options, there may be finer selection criteria they use now that wasn't as common in that era.
leeroyjenkins11··on National debt surpasses $31T
Is that calculated in a way that takes into account that we blew out the spending in 2020 and 2021 to an insane level, and therefore the rate is lower than 2019 because 2020 and 2021 was so huge?

That's like saying look at the small rate my debt is increasing because I went from adding 1000 a month to spending 100,000 a 3 months ago and I'm only adding 99,000 this month.

leeroyjenkins11··on Why are so many adults acting just like children?
Because the world has not always been this way. The infantilization out teens and young adults, with the lack of purpose and call to become an adult with responsibility took us here. Basically, people have capital and no responsibility so they spend money on toys, be it car, game systems, or figurines from their favorite anime. One has to wonder, in 20 years, with this lack of meaning and responsibility lead to regret? Having children and taking responsibility are huge in giving people meaning instead of being simply a consumer.
leeroyjenkins11··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
The thing is, they aren't doing it as a selfless act. If I want to get a liberal arts education I can go onto open courseware and get a free education. I know so many people getting degrees to get a job that shouldn't need them. I know many that went from a stem degree to a throw away degree because they felt stem was too hard for them and interfered with their social life.

A real fix for the student loan crisis would be to make a national competency test instead of using a bachelor's degree gauge competence. Then get rid of government backed student loans.

My time in college could have been halved if I could have not taken a bunch of the classes that added no value to my education. Honestly, it's shameful how bad those Gen Ed classes are. They exist to check a box.

And I'd be pretty upset to pay for someone else to get a liberal arts degree, especially when it doesn't contribute anything and could have been gotten for free if the person took some initiative.

leeroyjenkins11··on Why Bringing More Affordable Housing to Austin Is a Block-by-Block Battle
Then why don't they stay in CA?
leeroyjenkins11··on What's Salesforce? (2021)
SOQL is like ssql, but worse! No joins, no unique, no returning more than 2000 results at a time.

Visual force is like java server pages, but worse because it injects all sort of stuff into the rendered page like these wierd ids, stop you from using a lot of basic html between the visual force tags.

And finally, they have been pushing so hard for their redesigned UI , lightning. Problem is that it is much much slower than the old pages by a lot.

leeroyjenkins11··on Ask HN: How often do developers fail at their task?
Sometimes I fail a sprint because estimations weren't correct. Sometimes I fail a task technically because the task can't be done with the tools I have or the time I'm given, or would produce code too brittle or rotten to justify doing.

When I have more of a free hand I usually can get something working though. But it's not like I'm creating new algorithms or anything.

leeroyjenkins11··on California approves bill to punish doctors who spread false information
The issue is who decides what is false. Will people be prosecuted for saying true things that the state says is false? It's not like the state would lie about something.
leeroyjenkins11··on Covid “Fudge Factor” – A map of Covid data corruption and approach that worked
It's interesting, I do have trouble using excess deaths and attributing it to covid though. I was in Honduras in the ultra poor mountain region in intibuca and the people there said the entire town got covid, but there was only one death. It's was a small town, but the area had well over 200 people. What did happen was that the government literally cut off access to the nearest city where people could get food, supplies, and medicine.and there are many life-threatening illnesses that can be addressed with cheap medication. In the major cities, they made it so one person could leave a household during a week to get supplies, but I have to think that lockdown and decreased access to healthcare and necessities had severe impacts, especially when populations are more active.
leeroyjenkins11··on Delivering Equitable Access to America’s Research
I love how everything needs to be through equity now. You can't just say we want to provide open access to publicly funded studies. It has to be about minorities
leeroyjenkins11··on Most workers want their employer to share their values
For me,if the company is apolitical and doesn't do something if find wrong on a moral level, I'm fine with them. If they push garbage on me in DIE training or celebrates causes I don't agree with, I'm willing to take a paycut to not work there. It's because of the all of these places getting involved in politics that it becomes an issue for me.
leeroyjenkins11··on EU Digital ID wallet is coming
It reminds me of a section from the gulag archipelago where the KGB would accuse you by taking a picture of you with someone who was thought to be a spy because they were seen with someone accused of being a spy by someone who was accused of being a spy. They came in with circumstantial evidence to take people away.

Follow anyone for long enough and they will look guilty of something. And with the 1000s of laws, does anyone think they won't break one?

leeroyjenkins11··on Barber schools and license requirements in Rhode Island
It also gives the state a stick to make sure people do what they want. Fight us and we revoke your license. It goes from protecting the consumer from scams, but often grows into a way to exercise power.
leeroyjenkins11··on Study of falling sperm counts finds 'alarming' levels of chemicals in male urine
Does that have any relationship to pornography usage? Porn usage affects those feelings but can negatively affect actual sexual performance, especially in monogamous relationships.
