leahculver··on Netflix for baby clothes
I use Rent the Runway for renting designer (formal) dresses. They're great!

leahculver··on Foursquare's Big Round: A Sign of Things to Come for NYC
Foursquare also just opened a San Francisco office in order to be able to hire more technical talent. So, meh.

leahculver··on Welcome Sam, Garry, Emmett, and Justin
As part of YC winter 2011 I've already had office hours with both Sam and Garry. The nice part of having so many advisors is that each advisor tends to specialize in different areas (Garry is great with design and UX and Sam has good advice on social products and fundraising).

A wider variety of expertise is super helpful for the increasingly diverse group of YC companies.

Welcome Sam, Garry, Emmett, and Justin!

leahculver··on We're all remote: how we deal with a 100% remote dev team
It's true that there aren't a lot of clients out there for Convore yet. There are quite a few Convore projects started on GitHub (https://github.com/search?q=convore&type=Repositories) and more clients are welcome!
leahculver··on HN: What is something you learned way too late in life?
If you fold down the zipper pull, it locks. Your fly won't come undone.
leahculver··on TellFi (YC W11) Is Google Voice For Companies
We (Convore Inc) were an early beta user of TellFi. In about 5 minutes we were able to get a phone number and have that phone number go straight to voicemail and email us the voicemail. Perfect!
leahculver··on Get Lanyrd (YC W11) in your Gmail inbox with Rapportive (YC S10)
Since I already use Rapportive, I tried the Lanyrd integration and I love it. It's really nice to be able to see conferences that the sender is speaking at. I can also view slides and videos of the person. It's a great way to get to know who is emailing me!
leahculver··on Convore (YC W11) Wants To Be The Easiest Group Communication App Yet
Yes, Leafy Chat was a totally separate project built by myself, Alex Gaynor, and Chris Wanstrath for the Django Dash a couple years ago. Leafy Chat was a pure web IRC client. Convore is inspired by IRC but not based on the protocol and functions a bit differently. For example, Convore has the concept of topics, which is not in IRC.
leahculver··on Django Security Releases Issued
To take advantage of the admin issue prior this security release, a user would need to 1) have access to the admin 2) have limited admin privileges 3) be smart enough to manipulate the querystring in the URL.

I got a good chuckle out of this fix because I'm assuming that in practice 2) and 3) are mutually exclusive.

leahculver··on A hell of a time
Okay, this sounds a bit harsh... so I'll explain more.

As others have stated, employment in California really is at-will. For example, I know someone who has been fired for getting too drunk at a company party!

So yeah, companies in California can fire you for any reason, or no reason at all. In this case I see the negative effects of keeping the person employed (such as the loss of potential employees and damage to the company reputation) outweighing their value as an employee.

leahculver··on A hell of a time
I'd fire him. If Twitter doesn't fire him they are spoiling their pool of potential hires. Who would want to work with this guy? I bet the female employees at Twitter are already fairly creeped out by him now.

leahculver··on Dropping Django follow-up: Fundamental ORM flaw
I built a Django site with hundreds of thousands of users... Pownce. At Pownce, we started with the basic ORM and dropped down to pure SQL queries for certain often-used or slow queries.

Meh. Problem solved.

leahculver··on Hurl
Thanks! Me too.
leahculver··on Rails Rumble finalists announced - Vote for the best 48-hour micro-app
Please help vote. Rating some of the apps at the bottom of the list and solo apps will be extra helpful! Thanks.

"Don't wanker in technology" just means not to get too caught up in background technology at the expense of your end users and end product.

For example, instead of switching to a trendy key-value store (or developing their own), FriendFeed has done some incredible database stuff on top of MySQL. It was the right solution for them (even if it is less cool) and it helped scale their architecture quickly.

leahculver··on [dead]
We're working on a fix for that right now. Freenode has been incredibly patient with us which is cool (thanks!).
leahculver··on The Hacker's Diet
Supermodels seem okay with it, so it can't be that difficult. Just kidding (sort of)! It just takes A LOT of time and discipline which yeah, not many people have.

Also, if you're interested in what I've been working on lately, check out baconfile.com (web interface for sharing files via Amazon S3) and leafychat.com (web IRC client).

Hey hn. Sorry that it's vague. I'll take the time to fill in the details if A List Apart ever comes calling. Otherwise, I'm too lazy to blog, hence you could call it "an exercise for the reader."
leahculver··on Ask HN: Where to get promo stickers made?
I think the new GitHub stickers are from http://www.clubcardprinting.com/

They're located in the Castro in San Francisco and the staff is super friendly and the stickers are affordable and have a very quick turnaround. I've used them for stickers for a side project and they had them done in a day.

My friend from Scribd recommended them, so if you go with them, it's nice to mention Scribd as a referral.
