ldng··on Tillitis Key – Mullvad spin-off inspired by measured boot and DICE
It is an FPGA, fully open both at software and hardware level. So quite a bit more futurproof, inspectable and upgradable than a yubikey.
ldng··on FogBugz new owners attempting to auto-upgrade all free plans to paid
Not without consequences most of the time.
ldng··on After self-hosting my email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel
Still relevant, since we were discussing email, it would not need the whole "internet community" to agree, just a handful or two of provider could impose it in practice.

Standard are useless if majors providers apply a different de facto norm. That behavior has a name, it is called a cartel. And on some matters, that is punishable by law.

> Nobody really forces you to use HTTPS either

Yet, in practice, that is exactly what both Chrome and Firefox are trying to do.

ldng··on Upscayl – Free and Open Source AI Image Upscaler for Linux, macOS and Windows
Could something similar applied to 3D scanner points cloud ? Would Real-ESRGAN work in 3D ?
ldng··on Why no Roman industrial revolution?
You're missing the point. That's not incompatible with what I say. The critical mass just wasn't reached.
ldng··on Why no Roman industrial revolution?
There are no transitions. It's a myth fueled by relative use graphics, in really in absolute value consumption has only been growing.
ldng··on Why no Roman industrial revolution?
It is an established fact that deforestation was the consecuence of coal mining. Britain consumed way more wood as tunnel/mining frame than as firewood.

It was known and used, just that there wasn't enough incentive for massive extraction so it wasn't searched. It's population growth and in conjonction with it urbanisation, electrification and railroads that lead to the search of more efficient energy source.

Nothing really prevented people from using coal earlier and they did but keep in mind that town where smaller and people scattered about in lots of smal villages. It was easier to collect wood.

Remember that by the end of 18h century, only a handful of cities barely reach a million inhabitant.

ldng··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
To be successful a language still has to be approachable to most dev. I just hope you are not conflating PLT with Functional. Look what functionalist did to Scala... It had an interesting balance and they destroyed it.
ldng··on AWS breaking changes
It has, on RDS.
ldng··on Map showing birthplaces of "notable people" around the world
All I have got in Firefox is a blue ball.
ldng··on Can I run analytics without defacing my website with annoying consent banners?
Yes. Server-side with good old-fashion log analyzer.
ldng··on Tell HN: Discord is permanently locking out users with multiple accounts
Well, never give your phone unless it is a very critical account/service and thus avoid a shit ton of stupid bugs anywhere.
ldng··on Playstation Store removes Studiocanal movies, no refunds offered
They are now pennyless and can't even send a letter if their lives depended on it. It's a complete failure.
ldng··on Archaeologist discovers 6k year-old island settlement off Croatian coast (2021)
No they should not otherwise random thieves and/or idiots will raid the site and destroy the real archeological value ...
ldng··on A look at search engines with their own indexes (2021)
That. And it's not just the search: https-everywhere, HTTP/2, QUIC, HTTP/3 ... all that is be design and it molds the internet to favor big cloud providers. The all too familiar embrace and extend basically.
ldng··on Show HN: Recut automatically removes silence from videos – built with Tauri
Might not be as great as you seem to think, you'd be unflagging silence that you'd want cut anyway. I imagine you'd get false positive like with a speaker frowning and be silent for a few second because he's thinking.

Point is you'll still have to review manually the result anyway for under- and/or over-cuts.

ldng··on Rustdesk – Remote desktop software, an open source TeamViewer alternative
"Sunshine is a Gamestream host for Moonlight"

What is Gamestream ? What is Moonlight ?

ldng··on OpenTelemetry Traces and PostgreSQL
The title, more than click-baity, is outright misleading...
ldng··on Improved Process Isolation in Firefox 100
Not any as efficient that I'm aware of (happy to be proven wrong)
ldng··on Improved Process Isolation in Firefox 100
It now shows as deactivated by default on every new page
ldng··on Improved Process Isolation in Firefox 100
Is that what definitively broke uMatrix ?
ldng··on European Commission prefers breaking privacy to protecting kids
I've been told (I don't know if it's) that showing you an ad for something you just bought reinforce your satisfaction and are thus significantly less likely to return the product.

I really wonder if it's true.

ldng··on Testing my system code in /usr/ without modifying /usr/
You're making an Apple to Orange comparison here. Your examples are not released to the outside world as a single product "take-it-or-leave-it" and painting it so is borderline bad faith.
ldng··on Testing my system code in /usr/ without modifying /usr/
"But systemd is not some monolith"

It. Does. Not. Matter.

Still to much code in one place. Not enough review and unrelated subproject bitrot at different rate without visibility.

ldng··on E Ink's latest color ePaper panel is faster, denser and features pen support
I mean that E-ink business practices are the biggest (the hugest even) obstacle to a wide ePaper adoption. They pretty much own all of the most important patent and you only see progress in the products in the consumer market when they expire.
ldng··on E Ink's latest color ePaper panel is faster, denser and features pen support
sight

If only E-Ink knew how to better handle their patent portfolio...

ldng··on Libre Desktop Publishing
I'm really wondering if being on Sourceforge is being a deterrent to developer attraction or not.
ldng··on Plans for Gnome 43 and Beyond
Oh the strategy was there since the premises of Gnome 3. One size fits all, tv-desktop-tablet-phone are all the same. RH even hired UI/UX designers to push this agenda. Unsurprisingly, it failed.

It then became "all about keyboard" to not loose all the devs. And now the one size fits all is back in full swing and if it can hurt the Cinnamon, Mate and al "competition" in the process all the better.

It made the desktop on Linux stagnate and did not "win" any tablet, tv or phone market share in the process. What a waste.

ldng··on Plans for Gnome 43 and Beyond
Integrating the file chooser is just one more dick move to make the life of other desktop solutions that relying on GTK harder.
