ldbooth··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
Drive from from Sacramento to Tahoe in the winter... There's weather, and tons of ice/snow at elevation.

Many here complain about how inaccurate Tesla's range calcs are driving to Tahoe. It's not the state, it's the amoral response to incentives.

ldbooth··on Unapproved books now a felony in Manatee County schools
... when a political power claiming "freedom" or "liberty" reveals it's only free within the approved ideology ...
ldbooth··on Binance has lost $12B in assets in under 60 days
I'd throw Fidelity into that category but I don't know the assets under mgmgt., Just they are huge, private, and more and more offer retail like online banking with some physical locations that are more investment-advisor oriented.
ldbooth··on ‘Wealth is a curse’: Hobby Lobby founder says he’s giving away his company

ldbooth··on Ask HN: What is the most mind expanding book(s) you have read till date?
The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins
ldbooth··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022?
Bill Browser's Red Notice and then Freezing Order.

They read like fiction and gave me a whole new appreciation for how Russia works, plus international politics and investing.

ldbooth··on California pulls the plug on rooftop solar
What's illegal about supplying your own electricity? That can't be real. But for most, likely it'll be more of a pain because batteries require maintenance.
ldbooth··on Binance freezes withdrawals of stablecoin USDC as investors pull $2B
Yikes. This could be the first inning of the Tether bubble deflating, and by extension half the crypto market.
ldbooth··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
Most ground mount solar projects have a base flood elevation, under which the panels will be inundated with water, not to mention, moved at least once a year. A rack-less mounting solution might work in some locations, but very few.
ldbooth··on Highway EV charging will soon need a ton of power
Certainly part of the problem is the protocol of the highway system itself, and our expectation as consumers. Passengers can get by on 30kg ebikes we need a lane system for those on all roads, not just a 'take your own risks bike lane'. 1500kg passenger vehicle curb weight should not be the starting point for passenger vehicles. But no one takes this on because it's regulatory and a quagmire.

Trucking is an unavoidable issue, but (at least in the US) there is plenty of space for combined solar/wind/battery sites on trucking corridors.

ldbooth··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
The 2 biggest problems you'd want to solve for first are (a) who will buy the power("offtaker") and (b) where the solar project will be placed. If it's commercial, often it will be at the offtaker's location. There is a competitive industry competing for these customer already of course.
ldbooth··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
The timing of this is the content - not the ending of remote work issue. It's using the news cycle and a hot button issue (end remote work) to bury the regulatory liability of the headline of the 3 chief complaince officers resignation the day before a FTC complaince filing.
ldbooth··on GM created a new energy business to sell batteries and solar panels
People install solar panels when the levelized cost of electricity is cheaper than buying from the utility. This is about the cost of fueling the vehicle.

Energy presents a new market to sell goods and services into, they don't want 3rd parties to control the ecosystem after the vehicle sale. There's a battle for home energy ecosystem control playing out today. See Enphase's full product offering for an example.

ldbooth··on Ask HN: Where do you find the interesting jobs?
(Asked about an interesting job.) Comments proceeded to be focus on high paying, large market cap tech companies.
ldbooth··on Electric Mercedes-Benz drove 747 miles without recharging, 2x Tesla's Model S
This kind of press is akin to hailing the 20 gallon gas tank over the 10 gallon gas tank. In the future consumers will understand kWh per mile is more important, just like mpg is today.
ldbooth··on Starbucks may close its bathrooms to the public again
+1 on the non-customer fee, I don't know why the US doesn't do that.

Convenient timing to ditch the 'transitory' branding.
ldbooth··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
The variety of Ask HN is a positive feature this community has over a pure aggregator, IMO.
ldbooth··on Work begins on architects’ cracked Denver residential tower
Am I the only one who thinks: just make the whole facade trees/greenery?
ldbooth··on Ask HN: How are you handling salary/compensation with high inflation?
2 possibilities imo. 1-asset prices reflect inflation due to M2 increase, cpi will catch up. 2-asset prices are up due to low bond yields, bond investors moved into retail assets such as housing (like Blackrock) and this is driving up costs and thus rent.

If the fed raises interest rates, the corporate debt levels are unsustainable and a recession will ensue, but housing will return to normal prices as institutional bond purchases resume. If not, more of the same. This is all 2008 and quantitative easing playing out... The fed wants to prevent market busts and as a result will create more drastic busts playing with fire.

ldbooth··on Uber posts first profitable quarter on adjusted basis
Uh huh. Adjusted, meaning EBITDA, or as Charlie Munger refers to them "bullshit earnings".
ldbooth··on A Note About Recruiters
Some recruiting, like some sales jobs and like many things in life, is a numbers game. And there is zero cost for the bulk messaging campaign on the way to the 1/50 affirmative response they will get. If there is a way to solve this inefficiency, it's well worth building a better solution.
ldbooth··on Zillow has listed 93% of the hundreds of Phoenix homes it owns at a loss
I think Blackrock and other asset owners buy the houses and rent them out through management companies. Thru which they can materially impact rent costs in a given area.
ldbooth··on Zillow has listed 93% of the hundreds of Phoenix homes it owns at a loss
To couch this for the US assets, 2020 M2 money supply shot up 30%, a historically significant amount. I'm still waiting to see if the "gains" in stocks/housing since 2020 is really a gain or the immediate result of price inflation due to money printing. Or "quantitative easing".
ldbooth··on Meta: A Social Technology Company
Without "-data" meta struck me as corporate appropriation of slang. 'Hella' would be more entertaining.
ldbooth··on Facebook plans to change its name as part of company rebrand
... to his own foundation, which he controls the money of. He even manages the Gates foundation investment decisions. Oh, to be rich enough to fund my own foundation for tax and PR purposes!
ldbooth··on Facebook kept its own oversight board in the dark on program for VIP users
the oversight board was always a PR tactic. Zuck is the common denominator, expect more of the same bad faith and sociopathic tendencies. Scott Galloway has accurate critiques of these shenanigans.
