lbotos··on The Church FAQ
I've "terrified" contractors when I've called them on their BS. I once had a contractor tell me it was okay to notch 50% into a load bearing floor joist. I quickly pulled up the building code and his face went pale...

What do you mean by this? My 401k is.... publicly traded stocks? What am I missing?

lbotos··on The Man in the Midnight-Blue Six-Ply Italian-Milled Wool Suit
I think that we are at a "generational inflection point".

I did the whole "it's cool to wear t-shirts to work" startup thing, and now that I'm a little older and the stakes are a bit higher in the office, It does feel a bit disrespectful to look "unserious".

So it's probably a perennial moment: ppl getting older. Maybe I'm boring now.

(Also, died at loss in your footer, and the MD timeline of discovery is cool -- submit it here!)

lbotos··on Changes in schizophrenia diagnoses associated with cannabis use disorder
It's a great question. You can get high CBD strains now (it's getting dubbed "type 3") and you get the body relaxation and calming effects but none of the mental impact.

There aren't many studies on what are the real impacts of CBD.

Does it? Help me understand your point. I think you are saying "censorship means they don't even know?"

lbotos··on Making the video that made Gorillaz
Demon days 4 eva

Gorillaz were an excellent exercise in reminding me as a youth that it was okay to build this sort of fantasy world and make it real. It was more than okay, it was cool.

If anyone has the Japanese minidisc kids with guns and they wanna part with it https://www.discogs.com/release/16025872-Gorillaz-Kids-With-...

ah -- so they aren't "working in slack" that's just how/where the users interface.
lbotos··on How we scaled Slack to support 1000s of developers
How many folks do you have to support your slack channels? I'm counting 4-5 support engineers based on your about page?

What are your SLOs for messages?

How are you managing missed SLOs?

Nemo, are you using a self-hosted install or .com?

If .com, email me (it's in my profile) and I can see if there is a reason your account is getting so heavily captcha'd.

lbotos··on Show HN: Lightpanda, an open-source headless browser in Zig
Not OP -- do you have some kind of proxy or firewall?

Looks like you couldn't download https://wikipedia.com/portal/wikipedia.org/assets/js/gt-ie9-... for some reason.

In my contributions to joplin s3 backend "Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'length')" was usually when you were trying to access an object that wasn't instantiated. (Can't figure out length of <undefined>)

So for some reason it seems you can't execute JS?

lbotos··on GitHub Linux ARM64 hosted runners now available for free in public repositories
Ok.

You could:

- host your own set of static runners on AWS -- which, have a fixed monthly cost.

- pay a provider for hosted runners -- most providers bill in CI Minutes. So you will run out of minutes if jobs run amok, not run up your bill.

- Set up auto-scaling runners that ebb and flow based on demand. This case is the one that represents the risk you are describing of an unexpected bill increase.

2/3 cases of "paying someone else for CI compute" are just as predictable as your solution cost-wise. Yours could be cheaper, but the risk of "unexpected bill increase" is not really there.

lbotos··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
If you are in growth mode, say 20% growth or more -- and you are hiring quickly, your probably gonna have new dynamics form that change the shape of the team (Every hire changes the culture). Some folks may no longer be the right folks. (Could even be a new hire -- I had someone who I had high hopes for leave in 9 months because they weren't able to mesh.)

Businesses are people but business is cogs. (In both senses of the word)

To be a manager in a large org, you need to constantly be refocusing the team on the goal. Drift happens. When you have 100 brains, you get 100 ideas.

This "rule of thumb" reason is to make sure leaders are not languishing. It's very easy to see the people, and lose sight of the business goal.

Are all 100 people aligned and driving towards the goal? (If so, amazing and you should fight to keep all of them.)

lbotos··on I still don't think companies serve you ads based on your microphone
Yes, but I think that's the part that feels... unsettling.

I watched a Nigerian film on the seat back display on the plane the other day. I looked it up on my laptop when I got home because I didn't finish it.

The next day in my Instagram explore page I had a Nigerian meme...

Yes, I get it -- could be frequency illusion or some IP address/cookie shenanigans. Still feels weird.

It challenges the assumptions around "accessibility". some linters might (blindly) suggest aria labels, where the author is suggesting otherwise. That is worth the 3 min reflection that this article took to get through eh?

Does anyone know if "Start its web browser and have that browser display a designated start page." is specific thing for this tablet or if that is "normal" in android?

I want to do something similar for anki cards I'm struggling with, and I dunno if I'm in for a world of pain. I was considering https://shop.boox.com/products/go6 for my needs as it's a bit cheaper.
