layoutIfNeeded··on Ask HN: Is domain squatting still profitable? Is there a solution?
Ummm… You know, domain names have use cases other than hosting websites. It’s just a mapping from ASCII strings to IP addresses.
layoutIfNeeded··on Clubhouse Is a Cargo Cult
Club-what? I vaguely remember some app with an obnoxious icon… that’s all.
layoutIfNeeded··on On Apple’s “Expanded Protections for Children” – A Personal Story
Ummmm… I have bad news:

“These features are coming later this year in updates to iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, and macOS Monterey.”

https://www.apple.com/child-safety/ :^)

layoutIfNeeded··on On Apple’s “Expanded Protections for Children” – A Personal Story
Better tech, not really. Otherwise it’s accurate.
layoutIfNeeded··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
Don’t talk to the police.

And that includes the FBI.

layoutIfNeeded··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
Ummm… the fact that changing a single pixel will let the baddies evade detection?
layoutIfNeeded··on Hospital exec says employees are walking off the job
But we were clapping! :/
layoutIfNeeded··on Apple enabling client-side CSAM scanning on iPhone tomorrow
@dang is that true? :O
layoutIfNeeded··on Apple enabling client-side CSAM scanning on iPhone tomorrow
If you really believe this will stop at child porn, then I have a bridge to sell you.
layoutIfNeeded··on Ray Tracing Gems II available as free download
The Springer site just hangs when I click on the download link…
layoutIfNeeded··on Apple Makes Magic Keyboard with Touch ID Available for Purchase
Meh… no touch bar.
layoutIfNeeded··on Cheap material converts heat to electricity
You can’t. The second law of thermodynamics prohibits it.

“It is impossible to devise a cyclically operating device, the sole effect of which is to absorb energy in the form of heat from a single thermal reservoir and to deliver an equivalent amount of work.”

layoutIfNeeded··on Cheap material converts heat to electricity
That’s thermodynamically impossible.
layoutIfNeeded··on Cheap material converts heat to electricity
Nitpick: you can’t convert heat to electricity. You need a heat differential.

layoutIfNeeded··on Apple is now an antifragile company
Could you provide a few examples from your workflow that requires you to open Xcode?
layoutIfNeeded··on Apple is now an antifragile company
You only need clang and codesign to build an app.
layoutIfNeeded··on New in Git: switch and restore
Exactly. The way I see it is that “checkout” has two arguments:

- the commit you want to checkout, which defaults to HEAD

- the files you want to checkout, which defaults to everything

Simple as.

layoutIfNeeded··on New in Git: switch and restore
No thanks, I will keep using checkout.
layoutIfNeeded··on “Safari's buggy” is valid criticism, “Safari's behind Chrome in features” is not
>whose actually using this stuff?

Some Google engineer’s promotion case.

layoutIfNeeded··on “Safari's buggy” is valid criticism, “Safari's behind Chrome in features” is not
* and probably the most inefficient
layoutIfNeeded··on “Safari's buggy” is valid criticism, “Safari's behind Chrome in features” is not
Huh? There are tons of smartphone manufacturers other than Apple. You are free to choose from them.
layoutIfNeeded··on “Safari's buggy” is valid criticism, “Safari's behind Chrome in features” is not
>what is their rationale for blocking other browsers on iOS?

Same reason you can’t install custom system fonts on iOS. They want to keep the iOS experience coherent. If you don’t like it, buy Android.

Edit: a system font is a font that system dialogs use. Not just any random custom font installed in the font library.

layoutIfNeeded··on “Safari's buggy” is valid criticism, “Safari's behind Chrome in features” is not
If this is such an important issue for you, then you shouldn’t buy an iPhone. Simple as.
layoutIfNeeded··on Perceptual distortions in late-teens predict psychotic symptoms in mid-life
>I also sometimes get this weird perceptual thing where objects look huge, again, normally while in a dark room

layoutIfNeeded··on From stolen laptop to inside the company network
It depends. Can you turn off auto-sleep?
layoutIfNeeded··on No-code startup Bubble raises $100M
Lol, works as expected:

“Your browser was unable to load some necessary resources, contact your IT network administrator and ask them to allow access to

     dhtiece9044ep.cloudfront.net
     dd7tel2830j4w.cloudfront.net/
     d1muf25xaso8hp.cloudfront.net”
layoutIfNeeded··on No-code startup Bubble raises $100M
>Do open source projects have an obvious "run this script to configure your complete dev environment in respect to this project" ?

./configure

layoutIfNeeded··on For developers, Safari is crap and outdated
Oh no! Safari refuses to support some "standards" that were unilaterally fast-tracked so that some PM at Google could put it in their promotion case. This is unacceptable!
layoutIfNeeded··on Jeanne Calment’s 122-year old longevity record may be fake (2018)
Strangely, I remember eating tons of dried apricot kernels as a kid with no ill effects. We were eating them like almonds…
