laurels-marts··on 90M people. 118 hours of silence. One nation erased from the internet
Government cutting internet access to 90m ppl while killing protesters in the streets and “growing up without internet” is not even remotely comparable lmao.
laurels-marts··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
You’re not alone. I absolutely love going to office every day but also love the flexibility to occasionally wfh if needed. I just feel like when I enter the office and put on my “unreachable” focus mode on I’m in the zone and very productive. At home there’s endless distractions (my cats make sure to check in with me every time get too focused). Also I do like interacting with colleagues. I think I started liking going to office even more once I broke up with my gf that was living with me for 4 years. Something about working the entire day from my apartment completely alone is… not appealing to my social side of the brain.
laurels-marts··on Ask HN: How do you fight YouTube addiction and procrastination? I'm struggling
Sports. I do 2h of strength training every Mon/Wed/Fri. You work with barbell, not machines. Requires all your mental and physical focus. That pretty much will soak up any “free” after-work time you have on those days. Then on Tue/Thu you can do social activities. Any time spent not working/sport/social activities I spend “whatever” which means watching a show, reading a book or doom scrolling - but it won’t a lot of time left for it. And honestly at that point you probably have a pretty well balanced life that “doom scrolling” is not an issue.

laurels-marts··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
iPhone XS Max here. I'm tempted this year.
laurels-marts··on Low level of Magnesium linked to disease-causing DNA damage
I have been taking 300mg of Magnesium Bisglycinate 30 mins before sleep for the past 5 months or so. I have anxiety which can lead to insomnia. It has been a great help.
laurels-marts··on Online dating apps struggle as people swear off swiping
Is there a meaningful difference?
laurels-marts··on Online dating apps struggle as people swear off swiping
What sort of mating strategy are you optimizing for?
laurels-marts··on Ask HN: How do I stop being obsessed with software architecture?
It could be that you have an anxiety disorder, obsessive personality disorder or OCD. Or perhaps not, but the obvious red flag is trouble sleeping. If you’re typically a good sleeper but find yourself sleepless when in one of your spirals it's a good indicator that you need to take a step back, take a deep breath and reset your mental state because its not the refactoring thats not letting you sleep its all the stuff that you have built up in your head.

Also complete rewrites in general are overwhelming and tend to turn out not the way you imagined anyway. Small incremental improvements and isolated refactors over a sustained period of time yield the best results.

laurels-marts··on DuckDB Doesn't Need Data to Be a Database
So you have duckdb running on the server (e.g. node.js) and duckdb-wasm running on the client? Or are you hitting S3 directly with duckdb-wasm?
laurels-marts··on Ask HN: What is your ChatGPT customization prompt?
> Only ever give node answers in ESM format.

I also add to always use async/await instead of the .then() spaghetti code that it uses by default.

laurels-marts··on D3 in Depth
D3 is from jQuery era so there are a lot of methods for manually manipulating the DOM like d3.select() and then selection.attr() etc. but those patterns tend to lead to components that are lengthy, hard to read and hard to maintain. Arguably a better approach is to group each D3 module based on whether it "modifies DOM" or "doesn't modify DOM". Then use React/Svelte to declaratively render the DOM and only use the D3 modules from the latter group for their math utilities.
laurels-marts··on D3 in Depth
I’ve been using D3 on and off for quite some time. I’m just starting now with react and visx definitely looks very promising as it bridges the gap nicely. Do you find it limiting though (like you have to fight the tool) to achieve something more custom vs. using plain D3?

laurels-marts··on Lowercase – A simple way to take and share notes
But what do you use to actually take the notes? After trying a bunch of apps I settled on VS Code with a custom Profile that has all the settings, extensions and UI states that I need for taking markdown notes.

I realised that I already spend at minimum 8-10 hours a day in VS Code, why learn another app with all the different quirks, UI and key bindings...

laurels-marts··on Google fires more workers after CEO says workplace isn’t for politics
I don’t get the genocide argument. Israel has complete air superiority, if genocide was the goal they could have leveled Gaza in the first day. Casualties would have been at least over 1 million not 30k. And they wouldn’t go door-to-door, drop flyers and knock-bombs (again why bother if genocide is the intent). The fact that the causality count is as low as it is considering they are fighting a genocidal terrorist organization that’s honeycombed itself in heavily populated civilian centers is already an achievement.

laurels-marts··on Meta Llama 3
I would have thought folks wouldn’t care less about superfluous stuff like “charisma” on HN and would like a monotone, calm robot-like man that 95% of podcast just lets their gust speak and every now and then just asks a follow-up/probing question. Thought Lex was pretty good at just going with the flow of the conversation and not sticking too much with the script.

I have never listened to Dwarkesh but I will give him a go. One thing I was a little put off by just skimming through this episode with Zuck is that he’s doing ad-reads in the middle which Lex doesn’t.

laurels-marts··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
> Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped.

This is both sad and pathetic. Not to mention devastates the local community. Instead of kids being able to get their first part-time job in a local shop stocking shelves or doing checkout these opportunities were completely offshored abroad.

laurels-marts··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
Need money for what though. Alcohol, drugs and gambling? The vast majority of crimes are not committed due to an inability to obtain food.
laurels-marts··on You cannot simply publicly access private secure links, can you?
You can definitely pass JWT as a query param (and often are in embedded scenarios) and no its not the same as logging passwords unless you literally place the password in the payload (which would be stupid).
laurels-marts··on Remix Vite Is Now Stable
As someone who's evaluating both Remix and Next right now Remix makes it very clear and front-and-centre that you can (and perhaps should) bring your server. Next documentation barely mentions it, if you're lucky to find anything at all and in some parts they discourage it and push you to embrace the "serverless/edge" future.
laurels-marts··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
When you refer to “training data” you mean reality?
laurels-marts··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
> In my opinion, some corrections are worthwhile.

The problem with “corrections” is that they obscure the truth. If you’re being given information and start forming perceptions that no longer map onto reality you’re actually in a much worse position to change or do anything about reality itself. It’s basically like you’re being lied to and misled. How can you fix the situation if you don’t even have the facts at hand or you’re not being made aware of the facts?

laurels-marts··on Observable 2.0, a static site generator for data apps
How fast exactly is DuckDB-Wasm for filtering for interactive coordinated views? Could the inputs be a brush selector range (x0, x1) from a time-series chart and then when you brush it the other components would re-render within… milliseconds? There used to be a cool JS library for this called crossfilter. Not sure if this could be a replacement for it?
laurels-marts··on Observable 2.0, a static site generator for data apps
I’ve been searching for alternatives to crossfilter.js for slicing large multidimensional datasets at sub 10ms speeds. Would DuckDB-Wasm be a suitable alternative?
laurels-marts··on Observable 2.0, a static site generator for data apps
Very impressive and will definitely server many use-cases. However, it's static site with data refresh at build time. Does this mean there cannot be user-based row-level security (i.e. selective access)?

One of the main selling points of the clunky, general purpose drag-and-drop BI tools (Power BI, Tableau etc.) is selective access. This is especially important in larger enterprises and for customer-facing dashboards.

For example, you're an enterprise manufacturing and selling IoT devices and have many different corporate customers. When you build a dashboard you want to make sure that each customer can see the data that belongs to their account and potentially, have further user-based restrictions. Obviously this goes against the idea of creating pre-aggregated datasets and instant loads but it's a massive multi-billion gap that currently is being filled by inferior tools to D3/Plot/Framework. This is something that Observable could develop in the future given what I'm seeing now and considering how relatively close already you are to this. Framework could serve both types of needs - static sites and dynamic, user-based more fully-featured sites for Enterprise needs.

laurels-marts··on Tenets
Svelte 5 moves closer to React in quite a few ways. The single component per file is still a dealbreaker for me. React got it right with composition and being able to break a component out into its sub-components.
