lauradhamilton··on Ways to Minimize Employee Retention
There is a difference between being shamed for breaking the build because you didn't run the test suite (and well knew that you should run the test suite) and being shamed for making an innocent mistake because you didn't know better.
lauradhamilton··on The 30-year-old health sector billionaire
Is there really an over-utilization of blood tests? MRIs, yes, but I'm not sure that right now we're really doing too many blood tests.

Regarding your point on Bayes Theorem, that's valid in some ways and invalid in some ways. Suppose someone gets a vitamin D test back at 8 ng/mL. There's not really a chance of a false positive. He's deficient and needs supplementation. Making the test cheaper, faster, and more accessible can really only improve the health of the population. It will likely also drive down the cost of healthcare overall, because vitamin D deficiency has all sorts of unpleasant effects.

Furthermore, the literature suggests that the vast majority of doctors do not understand Bayes Theorem. Source: http://yudkowsky.net/rational/bayes

lauradhamilton··on Google Web Fundamentals: Monetization
Eh, other than Adwords Google hasn't been able to monetize their web properties.
lauradhamilton··on Naturopathy vs. Science: Prenatal Vitamins
I think part of it is desperation. If someone is diagnosed with an incurable or untreatable disease or condition, then it's natural to try to look for some sort of treatment that will yield better results.

That means applying less skepticism towards "alternative" therapies.

Then you also have the following working against science: - Confirmation bias - Mistaking coincidence with causation - Overly aggressive pattern matching

lauradhamilton··on Ubuntu Bug 255161: Openoffice can’t print on Tuesdays
To be fair, if that bug happened to me, even with 10-20 data points I don't think I would have figured out it was a Tuesday bug.
lauradhamilton··on Amazon Local Register
Seems like quite a low rate. I hope they have a good team/plan for anti-fraud, because merchant fraud is a different beast from e-tail fraud...
lauradhamilton··on HTTPS as a ranking signal
Hm. I think this is the real answer.
lauradhamilton··on Yo Is Trying To Get Parody App YOLO and Others Pulled From The App Store
If people like the app then it is useful. I don't think Apple should be trying to censor apps that people like.
lauradhamilton··on Ask HN: How can I sustainably run a website without charging a fee?
Depending on what niche the website is in and how much traffic you get, you can potentially make decent money with the right affiliate program.

You can also upsell consulting services (again, depending on the niche).

lauradhamilton··on Google Startup Launch
Too bad "get your new website out of our organic search sandbox with manual approval" is not one of the features provided.
lauradhamilton··on How can I help my local government as a developer / designer?
Chicago has a group called "Open City" that builds open-source applications for the city.

Link: http://opencityapps.org/

One thing you could do is look through their apps (they're all open source & on github) and figure out which ones might make sense for your city.

You can then clone the apps you like, configure them for your city (many cities use the Socrata data platform, so this may be simply a config change in some cases) and deploy it for your city.

lauradhamilton··on Mistakes You Should Never Make
Yeah, I was confused by that as well. I don't see how you could have any books of any sort and not notice the discrepancy.
lauradhamilton··on Ask HN: Do bootstrapped billion-dollar companies exist?
Braintree was bootstrapped until pretty late
lauradhamilton··on A brand new Foursquare, with a brand new logo and look
I never check into restaurants -- I don't see the point. But I regularly check yelp to see reviews of new restaurants that spring up. Then I go check out the new restaurants with good reviews. (I live in Chicago.)
lauradhamilton··on Ask HN: Are EMBA programs worth it?
Depends, are you in startups/technology? If so then probably not. YMMV
lauradhamilton··on Malaysia Airlines flight crashes in Ukraine
I don't know, something seems fishy here. The official is claiming that separatists shot down the plane from 30,000 feet? Do the separatists own the technology to do that? What do they have to gain from shooting down a passenger plane?
lauradhamilton··on What Does Your Company Blog About?
My startup blogs about healthcare innovation -- analytics, software, startups, mobile, medical research, process, etc.

Link: http://www.additiveanalytics.com/blog/

How do I choose topics? I look over Google Scholar, Google News, PR sites, and government sites and find what seems interesting to me -- ideally stuff other people haven't written about. Then I write about that.

I promote the content via twitter (@addanalytics), LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook (totally worthless so far, maybe I am doing it wrong), sometimes Hacker News.

Does blogging work for your business? Yes, I've gotten some good leads via blogging. It has also improved my search engine rankings a bit although it's not magic.

lauradhamilton··on How to Get Engineers to Sort-of Respect You
What's wrong with "cheers"?
lauradhamilton··on Ask HN: Why is it so hard to spread some love on HN?
If it makes you feel any better, there's a great deal of randomness in terms of what makes it off the "new" page versus what doesn't. That's assuming that the content is good and you're not a recognized author.
lauradhamilton··on Help me pick a name for my rap website (2009)
Wow, Rapexegesis.com? I literally just misspelled that immediately after seeing it written.

ex·e·ge·sis ˌeksiˈjēsis/ noun noun: exegesis; plural noun: exegeses

critical explanation or interpretation of a text, especially of scripture.
    "the task of biblical exegesis"
synonyms:	interpretation, explanation, exposition, explication More
lauradhamilton··on Women's underwear gets an upgrade
I think that would be a nice bonus if the panties were priced in say the $13 range. I wouldn't pay these prices though.

I wonder how much margin there is at the current price point. If it costs them $15 to make one their product might be DOA...

lauradhamilton··on Women's underwear gets an upgrade
DAMN that's some expensive underwear. $47 for one?
lauradhamilton··on Yelp Says Search Results Favor Google+ Local Listings
Publicly complaining about Google's search results to the WSJ journalists.

Bold move Yelp. Let's see if it pays off...

lauradhamilton··on Amazon Makes An Offer to Hachette Authors
Wow. Genius move by Amazon.

Poor Hachette. RIP.

lauradhamilton··on Never relocate unpaid
This is good advice.
lauradhamilton··on Ask HN: Email from the future.
What? If sending emails to the past were possible, we would have seen it already.
lauradhamilton··on Ask HN: What are the best technical/startup blogs that you know about?
I write about tech/startups: http://www.lauradhamilton.com/
lauradhamilton··on Fab launches a new brand called "Hem"
I don't really have a comment on the service, but the website design (with the disappearing hero text) is exasperating.
lauradhamilton··on Big cyber hack of health records is 'only a matter of time'
Holy shit
lauradhamilton··on Community Will Get Its Sixth Season On Yahoo
Very interesting move by Yahoo. I didn't even realize they had a streaming service.

Hopefully this venture succeeds. The more different content distributors there are, the more good content we're going to see. (+ down with the cable monopolies...)
