latimer··on PHP Built-in web server
I can't remember where I read it, but I believe Rasmus stated that the original purpose of this was to simplify the PHP test cases. Since they couldn't assume that a user had a given web server installed, they had to use weird hacks to make PHP think it was running behind a web server and even then it couldn't test everything.
latimer··on Junk DNA — Not So Useless After All
Reminded me of something I read in an article "The Insanity Virus" a few years back.

>If our DNA were an airplane carry-on bag (and essentially it is), it would be bursting at the seams. We lug around 100,000 retrovirus sequences inside us; all told, genetic parasites related to viruses account for more than 40 percent of all human DNA. Our body works hard to silence its viral stowaways by tying up those stretches of DNA in tight stacks of proteins, but sometimes they slip out.

latimer··on Tough times on the road to Starcraft
Really interesting read. He mentioned that he'd talk more about the pathing in another post. I hope it will explain something I've always wondered about which is why the dragoon pathing/AI was not so good compared to other units.
latimer··on Why most of us believe that exercise makes us thinner—and why we're wrong
I took a nutrition class in college and had to read a few studies about the relationship between exercise and weight loss. The studies found that in the short term, there was little difference in both rate of weight loss and amount of weight loss in groups that used diet and exercise vs. diet alone. However they did find that those that exercised had a significantly higher success rate at maintaining their weight loss in the long term.
latimer··on PhalconPHP - High Perf PHP Framework as a C Extension
Wouldn't anyone who actually needs this level of performance sooner go for HipHop? It seems like you would get better performance with HipHop and still be able to use your framework of choice.
latimer··on RIP Open Source MySQL
Yes you have to install it separately for MySQL but it's enabled by default in MariaDB so their work has in fact made it into MariaDB.
latimer··on RIP Open Source MySQL
Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't this harm MySQL forks as well? Since the test cases are unavailable from now on, say for example they wanted to reimplement a certain feature, isn't it much harder for them to validate that their implementation works correctly?
latimer··on RIP Open Source MySQL
I've benchmarked all three and it seemed like the vast majority of the performance improvement on SSDs was due to the XtraDB engine which is included with MariaDB.
latimer··on Is MySQL becoming less open source? Test cases go internal now
I was just pointing out that Percona Server is another MySQL drop-in replacement since the commenter seems to be asking about an enterprise environment which Percona Server is targeted more towards than MariaDB. You're right I should have clarified that XtraDB is a product of Percona.
latimer··on Is MySQL becoming less open source? Test cases go internal now
I use MariaDB on all of my websites these days, the largest of which tops out at around 5K queries a second. The biggest draw for me was the XtraDB engine (which is also found in Percona Server) which is a replacement for InnoDB. XtraDB performs much better on SSDs and I was able to get over 50% performance gains on some queries with the default settings. This may or may not be applicable to your specific environment, but it is a drop-in replacement so it's very easy to just install it on a test box and stress test it with your current code.

latimer··on ScreenB.in, short URLs for screenshots
I don't think they do. I tried pasting a random non-screenshot image and it worked fine.
latimer··on The Annoying Thing About Self-Driving Cars: They Obey the Speed Limit
If self-driving cars keep their much safer track record when they start being actually used by the public, maybe they can adapt the carpool lane to be a self-driving car lane which has a higher speed limit?
latimer··on Loading half a billion rows into MySQL
Their Xtradb storage engine has very tangible performance benefits over InnoDB, especially on SSDs.
latimer··on Know Your Gmail Stats using Gmail Meter
On my laptop it perfectly covers the scrollbar so you can't use it at all. Funny how it doesn't seem to do that in anything that isn't Chrome.
latimer··on PHP 5.4.0 released
I'd also recommend Kohana. It was originally a fork of CodeIgniter, but version 3.0 was a complete rewrite for PHP5. Compared to Symfony, it's more of a barebones framework.
latimer··on Ask HN: $0.10/GB/Month for storage, unlimited free bandwidth. Interested?
I have to agree with the others about bandwidth. I run a high-traffic gallery that hosts user-generated images. Our gallery has about 300 GB of images, but we move over 130 TB of bandwidth per month. If I moved my site to your service would you still be making a profit at $30/month?
latimer··on How can poetry that doesn't rhyme be so pleasing to the ear?
Answer: Have Morgan Freeman read it.
