latimer··on Ask HN: How can I win more chargebacks?
Do you use Stripe's risk evaluation API? In my experience, a lot of chargebacks come from people who have had their credit card info stolen, then file a chargeback when they see the unknown transactions in their statement.

You could also try using the two step auth and capture method to allow more time for the victim to realize their info was stolen and do an additional fraud check with potentially more up-to-date models right before performing the capture.

latimer··on H&R Block and Intuit Are Lobbying Against Making Tax Filling Free and Easy
I haven't used CreditKarma's tax product either so I can't speak to its accuracy, but from my understanding they didn't build their own product, they acquired a company called AFJC which has been in the online tax space for a while.
latimer··on Making Google Data Studio Free for Everyone
Another complaint was lack of Postgres support. That was added a few weeks ago.

FWIW, this is the same syntax as JSDoc (http://usejsdoc.org/tags-type.html#overview).
latimer··on People are still bad at gauging their own interview performance
That quote reminded me of something my mentor told me when I was training to interview people in-person. He said if they're really struggling, change it up with an easy question for exactly the reason you gave, but also to get their confidence up so they don't start the next interview feeling bad.
latimer··on Was There a Problem with the Rio Pool?
Here's the response from Myrtha Pools, the maker of the pool, that disputes that there were any current issues with the pool.

latimer··on Node.js v6.0 Released
FYI for anyone looking for the downloads, v6.0 technically hasn't been released yet. It will most likely be out within a few hours.

Edit: of course right after I say it isn't released, it is released. :)

latimer··on Apple's $348M Tax Settlement In Italy Bodes Ill For Google, Facebook, Microsoft
It's a test they're running so not all users with ad blockers will see it. You can get around it by setting the forbes_ab cookie to false before clicking continue.
latimer··on Ask HN: How to Be a Good Technical Lead?
To add to your second point, it's also good to make people come to you if they need anything from someone on your team so you can filter out all the unnecessary interruptions and let them focus on their work.
latimer··on Cuvva – Car Insurance by the Hour
Interesting idea. Do you think you'll have any issues with people trying to wait until they get into an accident to sign up for a Cuvva policy then filing a claim as if the accident happened after the policy went into effect?
latimer··on Those people who need very little sleep
Anecdotally, I've found that the method in the article about having a fixed wake-up time worked for me. In college I used to sleep 8-9 hours a night and would feel awful if I got less than 7. I have trouble sleeping early even when I'm tired so when I started working I was only sleeping 5-6 hours and could barely make it through the work day even loaded up with caffeine. After half a year or so I noticed I could skip the caffeine and still felt alert. Now even if I try I can't sleep more than 8 hours.
latimer··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2015)
No problem, just sent you an email. Thanks for responding.
latimer··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2015)
Hey Ben, I sent in a software developer application about 3 weeks ago (included all required information). If I haven't received a response by now, does that mean I probably wasn't selected to go on to an interview? Thanks!

latimer··on Ask HN: Real-world programmer salary in Silicon Valley
That range is about right for someone with no professional experience. At a medium-sized company in SV you should be offered a minimum of 100-110k base salary, 10-15% yearly bonus, plus stock options.

latimer··on Why JavaScript Is Doomed
Comparing JavaScript to BlackBerry doesn't make any sense. Most people replace their devices every 2 years. Unless you like wasting time you're not going to rewrite your app every time a new better language comes out.
latimer··on AT&T Pretends It, Too, Will Build A 1 Gigabit Network
Even if they do end up following through on this, knowing AT&T it will be subject to the same 150 GB/month cap they have on U-Verse.
latimer··on Ask HN: Overcomming a federal conviction (computer fraud) for decent job?
This is going to sound a little cliche, but try not to get discouraged by the rejections. After graduating from college I applied to over 100 companies and ended up getting a measly 4 interviews, but one of them did get me a job offer. It doesn't matter if all of the others reject you, it just takes one offer to get you a job.
latimer··on Resistor hack turns a Nvidia GTX690 into a Quadro K5000 or Tesla K10
This is a good point. When you buy hardware, you are now the owner of it so they shouldn't be able to stop you from doing it, just like once you buy a phone you should be able to unlock it or install whatever software you want on it.

latimer··on "Space Jam" Website Still Online
It's interesting to see how HTML has changed since 17 years ago, especially since this was probably created before CSS was a standard (or at least not widely used). I had never even heard of the <nobr> tag before.
latimer··on Worse Than Useless: Personal Security Images
