lasermike026··on GPT-4.5
I would rather pay for 4.5 by the query.
lasermike026··on Alexa+
Why would I want Alexa+ if I have ChatGPT? Why isn't Alexa+ already a part of the Amazon Echo? None of this makes any sense.
lasermike026··on Should We Decouple Technology from Everyday Life?
I'm intrigued. We should think about this more.
lasermike026··on AI-designed chips are so weird that 'humans cannot understand them'
When I see something I don't understand I use AI to help me understand it.
lasermike026··on U.K. orders Apple to let it spy on users’ encrypted accounts
How about NO. Fuck off.
lasermike026··on Open Deep Research
I think I'm in love.
lasermike026··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
Insurance needs to be not-for-profit or a government enterprise. Physical projects and infrastructure should not be started until risk is assessed. Speculators and go-go finance has ought to be constrained. As for myself, I am choosing alternative ways to plan, finance, build, and manage infrastructure project. The current systems is a non-starter for most people under 50.
lasermike026··on No Calls
Humans talk to people. It's about building a relationship.
lasermike026··on “A Course of Pure Mathematics” – G. H. Hardy (1921) [pdf]
And the engineering takes their crude tools striking inanimate matter while the mathematician and the physics argue over the nature of reality.
lasermike026··on Making AMD GPUs competitive for LLM inference (2023)
I believe these efforts are very important. If we want this stuff to be practical we are going to have to work on efficiency. Price efficiency is good. Power and compute efficiency would be better.

I have been playing with llama.cpp to run interference on conventional cpus. No conclusions but it's interesting. I need to look at llamafile next.

lasermike026··on ChatGPT Pro
This might be the actual cost of LLMs. This would change the model considerably.
lasermike026··on ChatGPT Pro
This doesn't increase my salary and if you are consultant it reduces your billable hours. No thanks.
lasermike026··on ChatGPT Pro
That doesn't increase my salary. It just mean my boss will expect more work. $2400 a year. No deal.
lasermike026··on Amazon to invest another $4B in Anthropic
I'm working with models and the costs are ridiculous. $7000 card and 800 watts later for my small projects and I can't imagine how they can make money in the next 5 to 10 years. I need to do more research on hardware approaching that reduces costs and power consumption. I just started experimenting with llama.cpp and I'm mildly impressed.
lasermike026··on Amazon to invest another $4B in Anthropic
Does anyone know how they are going to make money and turn a profit one day?
lasermike026··on NY Times gets 230 wrong again
And Nero played the fiddle while Rome burned.
lasermike026··on Detecting when LLMs are uncertain
Currently LLMs do not have executive or error detection cognitive abilities. There is no theory of self or emotional instinct and imperatives. At the moment LLMs are just mindless statical models.
lasermike026··on Plastic chemical phthalate causes DNA breakage, chromosome defects, study finds
No one cares. The people profit from this don't care. Virtually everyone who buys these products doesn't care either. If you care and you want to do something about it get on the next spaceship, leave the earth and abandon this unintelligent human species.
lasermike026··on Drasi: Microsoft's open source data processing platform for event-driven systems
I suppose students need to prepare to defend what they are writing. Also, teachers may need a bit of a demotion when making accusations of plagiarism or generated papers. Teachers at the very least should be able to reasonably prove their accusations. There is a greater problem with tutors writing students papers. If teachers and students worked more closely this wouldn't be an issue.
lasermike026··on Show HN: Erin – Open-source and self-hosted TikTok feed for your own videos
This is good. It is long over due that we burn the social media sites to the ground.
lasermike026··on COBOL has been “dead” for so long, my grandpa wrote about it
With LLMs which programming language used becomes irrelevant. LLMs do not replace programmers yet but they do give programmers incredible leverage making these points moot.
lasermike026··on Gavin Newsom vetoes SB 1047
They misspelled AI with Al. This Al guy sounds very dangerous.
lasermike026··on Two new books on John Calhoun and his rodent experiments
The Secret of NIMH anyone?
lasermike026··on Ask HN: What tools should I use to manage secrets from env files?

lasermike026··on Launch HN: Modern Realty (YC S24) – AI Real Estate Agent for Home Buyers
Unfortunately this doesn't solve the problem of over priced houses and property. We don't need these mansions. What is required is cheap land and affordable, maintainable houses. This market requires a complete teardown. I'm not going to be satisfied until trillions of dollars in phantom value is goes to it's ration number.
lasermike026··on Google Illuminate: Books and papers turned into audio
This is awesome.
lasermike026··on Google Illuminate: Books and papers turned into audio
While this is very nice what I need is my computer to take voice commands, read content in various formats and structure, and take dictation for all of my apps. I need this in my phone too. I can do this now but I have to use a bunch of different tools that don't work seamless together. I need the Voice and Conversational User Interface that is built into the operating system.
lasermike026··on GPTs and Hallucination
No.
lasermike026··on GPTs and Hallucination
Stop using the term "Hallucinations". GPT models are not aware, do not have understanding, and are not conscious. We should refrain anthropomorphizing GPT models. GPT models sometime produce bad output. Start using the term "Bad Output".
