larrykwg··on A Test of Police Body Cameras Defies Expectations
wait but wouldn't the states have to pay for those lawsuits if the video evidence showed the cop doing the thing? Ohh I guess the narrative is that the police is most often wrongfully accused of wrongdoing, costing the state millions, which the cameras could help to clear up. Fnord.
larrykwg··on Australian police sting brings down paedophile forum on dark web
Maybe it would be a good idea if some western states have access to a kind of backdoor into Tor/I2P/Freenet/etc. How many pedo/drug/etc. illegal sites are still there and will be there in the future where the owners know proper opsec. I get the point that journalists/political dissidents want some anonymous communication channel, but do we have to tolerate shit like this? Maybe tor without the hidden services would be morally less contemptible?

I suppose its likely that the NSA controls/monitors a sufficient amount of tor nodes to make this already be the case anyhow.

larrykwg··on Amazon developing three new sci-fi series: Lazarus, Snow Crash and Ringworld
It is a SyFy show. They have a reputation of producing the worst garbage, while simultaneously blocking the option. Thats why they are generally disliked by various fanbases, that would rather see their worlds given proper justice to. Examples are A Wizard of Earthsea and Dune. But honestly, good book adaptions are just crazy rare anyhow.
larrykwg··on Apple reminds the FCC that it can’t activate imaginary iPhone FM radios
Yes, all phones with FM capability uses the headphone jack, usb connector or passive antenna adapters to get the FM signal in the first place. There would be some options for the latest iPhones aswell even without headphone jack.

Using an SDR you can generally receive a very broad range of frequencies its only a matter of the antenna. You can even build them yourself, there some tutorials that use a Pringles chips container to make a wifi antenna.

larrykwg··on Apple reminds the FCC that it can’t activate imaginary iPhone FM radios
Thats almost certainly a lie or misinformation, the baseband and wifi chips of an iPhone do have that capability, they are basically software defined radios. Its just that the firmware of those chips might have deactivated that capability. [edited]Apple generally wants you to use their music streaming service not radio.[/edited]

Do people genuinely believe if a head of marketing of a corporation tells them that they "care deeply about the safety of our users"?

larrykwg··on Why Is YouTube Demonetizing LGBTQ Videos?
The adpocalypse had an obvious chilling effect on youtube, lots of channels closed as a result of this. And while you can repeal the demonetization, this takes time and even if its successful will remove 90%+ of the income from a video anyways (since most ad revenue is generated in the first day[1]). The arbitrary nature of YouTube's decisions have always made doing YouTube as a full time job really risky. A large number of gaming related video creators have already transitioned to twitch.

YouTube is 100% opaque, nobody knows why and when they are doing anything. Including things that cause a huge damage for people that make their livelihood on their platform. They clearly don't really know what they are doing, I hope there is going to be a viable alternative to this terrible company in the future.

larrykwg··on Malicious software libraries found in PyPI posing as well known libraries
I don't understand why they even try, Debian stable seem to have an almost arbitrary selection of outdated ruby and python libraries, at this point that hardly seems worth the effort. Sure I get the idea, but it obviously doesn't work in practice. Their security methodology also seems heavily flawed, to backport security fixes to older versions is neither scalable nor particularly reliable. I sincerely doubt that Debian can provide adequate security to its almost 50,000 packages. If the security community would invest equal amount of resources that they invest in finding flaws in iOS or Chrome, nothing would be left of Debian but a pile of smoking ashes.
larrykwg··on Use pew, not virtualenvwrapper, for Python virtualenvs
Indeed do just use plain virtualenv by all means! Its by far the most mature and most widely adopted solution, I happily ignore all the esoterical "reasons" against it. All those religious arguments are just annoying, it works perfectly fine in cronjobs, systemd unit files, uwsgi services, etc.

also lets not forget about pip install --user !

larrykwg··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
So let me get this right, this company collects credit information and someone hacked into their web server and stole highly sensitive information about most of the adult american population. Then the executives sold their stock a day before they announced the hack to the public. Besides the troubling fact that you still use social security and credit card numbers as any form of reliable authentication, how aren't there already federal agents searching every square inch of the company and interviewing key employees under oath? But no, nobody is securing this evidence and thus any lawsuit will probably either fail or end in a small settlement of an amount the company will not be significantly hurt by, causing no reason for stronger security in the future of this or any other company.

The kind and amount of information warrant strong regulation in the way the data can be stored and processed (separate monitored networks not reachable from the internet would be the absolute minimum), governmental regulation needs to ensure the security of sensitive personal information like this and regular checks need to be conducted to ensure their adherence, especially in the case of a breach like this after the fact, you can't rely on the company conducting a forensic investigation.

But no of course not. I can already hear Americans preach to me how the free market is great and solves all your problems.

reading old C like this, I always wonder how could people code like this back then but apparently it was transpiled from fortran. So I'd assume the original code looked better. I dug around and found it, for comparison here is the original rooms.f vs. rooms.c:

https://github.com/mgius/zork/blob/master/rooms.c

Here is the full fortran code: http://gunkies.org/wiki/Zork#Source_code
