laratied··on Scar tissues make relationships wear out (2013)
You are just wrong and probably haven't had many relationships.
laratied··on Scar tissues make relationships wear out (2013)
No doubt. The people I have known in an Indian arranged marriage actually understand relationships.

They aren't trying to live in a Disney movie or Goethe novel.

My understanding is that Goethe and romanticism really messed up our views in the West about romance. We have unrealistic beliefs from trying to live up to fiction.

laratied··on Twitter engineering boss Foad Dabiri quits day after DeSantis launch glitches
Of course The Atlantic is trash.

Try reading one of the CCP's mouthpieces for a week and it will be such a revelation of how bad US news is that you are more informed about the world by a CCP mouthpiece than the US trash news.

In the US, we basically have competing factions of the National Enquirer vs Weekly World News reporting on a constant food fight for clicks. A person is not more informed by reading what side threw a sandwich across the table first.

They are all such complete and utter shit.

laratied··on TV doctors say annual checkups save lives – real doctors call bullshit (2016)
Many people really do want a form of shamanism still with their medical care.

The shaman does their useless ritual once a year and people are satisfied they are protected from black magic until the next annual checkup.

laratied··on Superintelligence: An idea that eats smart people (2016)
I am old. The problem is people shouldn't be making policy decisions that they don't have long enough to live in order to see the ramifications of those decisions play out. Skin in the game vs one foot in the grave.

This would be completely straightforward in a rational society. Not to mention, it is pretty weird for an 80 year old to still be wanting to hold on to power.

The ageism knock is total bullshit but I am sure you know that.

laratied··on Is history written by the winners?
Plus being much more educated. That might even be a bigger problem.

The idea that more educated people are easier to propagandize practically goes against our self conception and mythology but that doesn't make it less true.

I am pretty sure most people believe that their education insulates them from propaganda or lets them decipher what is true or not but that is actually part of the problem. If what they read lines up with what they want to believe, viola.

laratied··on TV doctors say annual checkups save lives – real doctors call bullshit (2016)
How many people have ever heard the term iatrogenic harm? Basically no one. "Iatrogenesis refers to harm experienced by patients resulting from medical care"

Studies put iatrogenic harm at about 30%.

It is also estimated that the 14th leading cause of death in the world is iatrogenic harm

laratied··on Show HN: I created a game to memorize the fretboard
This is actually a bug of tabs that you don't even care what notes are being played.

I think it is why so often I hear people play and the strings aren't even tuned. "Who cares, it is just numbers on a finger board game." mindset.

No one on any other instrument ever would say musically, who cares what the notes are.

laratied··on Hard stuff when building products with LLMs
It is also the mindset. I imagine the first time going on the internet and writing it off because you can't see what "products" can be built.
laratied··on Hard stuff when building products with LLMs
This is an absurd statement. I really don't understand what you can possibly be asking it.

It doesn't matter though. I would prefer you don't use it.

laratied··on ChatGPT: A Mental Model
The irony is I think GPT4 gives the best answer. It even gets the idea that language is inextricably tied up with our experiences of reality that most humans seem to simply not understand.

GPT4

"The statement that language models have a "model of reality" can be both true and false, depending on how you interpret "model of reality."

Language models like ChatGPT do have a kind of "model" in a broad sense. They have been trained on large amounts of text data from the internet and have learned statistical patterns from these data. This allows them to generate text that can seem sensible and knowledgeable about various aspects of reality.

However, this "model" is more akin to a very sophisticated pattern recognition system. It doesn't possess a deep or holistic understanding of reality as humans do. It doesn't form beliefs, doesn't have a consciousness, and doesn't experience the world in any sense. It can't learn from the environment or update its understanding over time. Its "knowledge" is fixed at the time it was last trained (for GPT-4, this is as of September 2021), and it can't incorporate new information or discoveries unless it's trained on new data.

Therefore, while language models like GPT-4 can simulate a kind of "knowledge" or "understanding" based on patterns in the data they were trained on, they don't have a model of reality in the sense of an evolving, interactive understanding based on sensory experience and reflection.

So, language models have a "model of reality" only in the sense that they mimic certain aspects of human language use, which is inextricably tied up with our experiences of reality. But this is quite different from possessing a human-like understanding or model of the world."

laratied··on Why labor shortages could be here to stay
This is delusional. The boomers voted themselves entitlements that is going to practically break the system.

I am GenX and don't have social media but this is such standard Boomer thought. Just no idea how much you are fucking everyone over.

Niall Ferguson even mentions how the boomers have basically broken the generational social contract. Previous generations never borrowed everything they possibly could from their grandkids and the unborn.

Generation Me.

laratied··on AI Is Catapulting Nvidia Toward the $1 Trillion Club
We won't. This is the myth of Homo economicus.

"humans as agents who are consistently rational and narrowly self-interested, and who pursue their subjectively defined ends optimally."

We will figure out new, irrational and suboptiomal ways to make new bullshit jobs.

The AI ethics department will be hiring a ton of people.

laratied··on Emissions are no longer following the worst case scenario
So often I read so many utterly ridiculous economic opinions expressed here by people who should know better and be better educated.

How can a smart, presumably educated person not know that rent counts as economic activity?

To say the world is poorer than in 2008 is just utterly preposterous.

Per capita GPD in China went from 3500 to 12500. India 1000 to 2200.

There is half the world. US, Canada and Europe is only 15% of the population but I don't know how the case can be made we are poorer than in 2008 either.

laratied··on Eating disorder hotline fires staff, switches to chatbot days after unionization
I would say the opposite. Once chatbots are at the level of chatGPT4, most customer service will be easily handled by the chatbot.

It is crisis situations with much emotions involved like this or someone who was the victim of fraud that is going to need the human touch.

Most things I can think of that I have ever called a customer service line for I would really have preferred to talk to gpt4.

laratied··on We Got Social Media Wrong. Can We Get AI Right?
IMO we have already got it wrong and put the cart before the horse. Political theater and existing leaders in the space talking their book.

Regulate what exactly?

Does regulation include scikit-learn? If it is obvious that it does not include scikit-learn then what exactly makes it obvious?

Is it GPU use so we are regulating GPU use? Are we just regulating language models?

Is HN defined as social media?

How can we possibly get things "right" when we don't even bother to define what we are trying to regulate?

It seems obvious that whatever regulation is passed there will be loopholes big enough to drive a truck through that the regulation will be 100% useless. Either that or we go insane and try to regulate linear regression.

laratied··on 58% of US adults have heard of ChatGPT; 14% have tried it
That is what I do too.

I also never type the first prompt out to 4 in the actual chat window if I think there is going to be some back and forth. I write it in a separate file and really clarify my own thoughts before pasting it in and starting the dialog.

If using 4 correctly I think your head should be swimming with new information before you hit the limit for most tasks.

"World ID digital identity that proves you are a real and unique person while fully protecting your privacy."

"The Orb checks that an individual is real and is unique, and has not previously received a World ID. It does this by capturing and processing images of an individual and their unique iris pattern. Since no two people have the same iris pattern and these patterns are very hard to fake, the Orb can accurately tell people apart from one another without having to collect any other information about them—not even their name"

We have culturally gone from Woody Allen inspiring awesome ambient electronic music to a dystopian eye scanning shitcoin.

laratied··on Germany Falls into Recession
There is really just the US economy. We would not say that Pennsylvania is in recession but New York is not.

The major difference between states is tax rates. Labor, transacting, anything else economically is practically transparent and frictionless.

laratied··on The forces at play in de-dollarisation
I had no idea who he was before picking up End of the World Is Just the Beginning and I read it cover to cover. He is just very entertaining.

Not even the slightest bit self-doubt when he says China won't exist in 10 years lol.

The amount of salt I take him with would be deadly for anyone with high blood pressure but he is so much fun.

I think a big part of his act is telling Americans what we hope will happen while not believing it will. Also plays on the idea "everything you know is wrong" .

I would recommend Niall Ferguson and especially the Good Fellas show/podcast/youtube show from Stanford Hoover Institution.

To contrast Niall with Zeihan on China, we are in Cold War 2 that will last multiple generations. When debt payments surpass military spending it tends to be the beginning of the end for an empire. The problem with Niall is I think he is actually talking about reality.

laratied··on Why You Should Give Up on Your Dreams
This line is so cringe to me: "On the other hand, consider a founder with a more complex sense of self, including identities such as: “founder,” “husband,” “guitar enthusiast,” “soccer player,” “friend,” and “father.”

My dream is to move to a different country that people who think like this are far away geographically.

laratied··on How Big Oil is manipulating the way you think about climate change
Coal use in 2022 set a new record globally though. It is exemplary of how difficult this problem is.
laratied··on Share of Americans skipping medical care due to money woes jumps significantly
Exactly. Just the typical incredibly out of touch, childish and highly privileged view often expressed on this forum:

"The smart people can work remote in Bali for 2x the median USD salary. If your not one of the smart people then you can bath and wipe old people's asses all day while being exposed to all kinds of pathogens for the median salary. The reason we don't have more of this is because of capitalism and whatever politics I don't like".

Variations on this theme in pretty much every topic with over a 100 replies.

laratied··on The QR-code menu is being shown the door
As an android user that hates Apple I thought this was funny.

65% of the market in the US, you know basically everyone! All the plebs with androids just sit home eating our turnips and porridge dreaming that one day our children will be able to afford to check their iphones at T.G.I. McFunsters.

laratied··on The QR-code menu is being shown the door
We have just evolved a type of racket to over charge people but this massively inefficient racket will hopefully die soon.

At this point it is really just a type of business tax and anti-progress. Paying 13k for a geocities site is increasing the probability the business fails.

I just can't imagine anyone paying that by 2030. Midjourney can already do the most amazing design work but it is stuck at the conceptual level. It won't be stuck at that stage for ever.

laratied··on Will deep understanding still be valuable?
I thought everyone understood Progress® as a marketing term and a type of theater with the only real progress being the net worth of the actors.

I didn't think people actually confused the theatrical performance with the progress of Boltzmann or Newton. Come on!

laratied··on Airbnb Preps for ‘Anti-Party’ Summer, Wants Neighbors to Snitch
It is even more absurd that this is for Memorial Day and 4th of July.

If anything I would say it is more like renting out off-road race cars and then complaining people got them muddy.

laratied··on Alcohol affects your body, from first flush of happiness to hangover
It doesn't have a detrimental effect on the medical system though.

It shifts the cost in time and then we can't see the counterfactual of the drinkers and smokers not being dead younger than what they would have.

You can't see how much the current 30 year old marathon running vegan is going to cost the system 50 years in the future compared to the smoker who needs treatment in the present. We pretend that the marathon runner is somehow saving the system money over the sum of their lifetime when in reality the one who is saving the system money is the one who dies younger than they would have. The one who prolongs their life longer than it would have been is the expensive one to the system. This is patently obvious if you spend any amount of time thinking about it.

Of course, no one is going to promote a type of libertine lifestyle as a way to save the healthcare system money. The thought is so unpalatable that we pretend the opposite is true.
