The abuse of English continues.

It's like calling it a "Car", or "Computer", these words have specific, concrete meanings. If you want to have a 'cool' name for your product fine, but not an already existing concept you bastardise to use in your name.

laputan_machine··on LK-99 isn’t a superconductor
Totally agree. I've watched that channel for a long time, and while he's always come across as arrogant, this video pushed me to unsubscribe.

You couldn't be more wrong. Getting people excited about possible technological advnacements is exactly the kind of thing we should be doing, we used to do this, in the 50s up until the 90s the prospect of the future was exciting.

What is the medias representation of the future now? A burning shithole, no future. It's depressing and not true. I enjoyed the few days of excitement, I want us to go back to having an optimistic outlook on the future of humanity.

I often think this about Ring / permanent surveillance that exists now. Nobody can even be free in front of their own house without the threat of something ludicrous happening to you and then it being on public record until the end of the internet. It's absolutely wild to me.
laputan_machine··on Science Fiction vs. Science Fantasy
DS9's first episode has a space alien organism living inside a permanent wormhole and it speaks to you through mind visions, exists at all points in time and can read your mind, put you in your own memories, etc. That happens in the first episode, the whole Star Trek universe is full of absolute fantasy.

Listen, you enjoy anime, that's fine, I grew up on Guyver, Dragonball, Trigun, Ghost in the Shell, there's plenty of great anime out there.

You seem very defensive.

If you have images of anime girls (especially young looking) as your wallpaper... People think you are weird. Nobody is telling this to your face because they don't want to offend you, but they are judging you, and I am too.

If you don't... what's the deal? Why are you defending it so much?

Trying to defend it by insinuating I am predjudiced against a group of people (because all Japanese people like anime??? I've lived there, they do not.) in some way is a facile defense.

laputan_machine··on Git Repo: Anime-Girls-Holding-Programming-Books
The kind of people I see with a fascination of anime girls are exactly the kind of people I expect to have one.

It is creepy, and everyone thinks you are creepy.

laputan_machine··on Why even let users set their own passwords?
There is an overwhelming amount of superfluous text in this article.

The author's solution:

> Rather than allowing a user to set their own password, passwords can be issued in exactly the same way as API keys are now: a high-entropy password is randomly generated by the issuing website, and the user is shown the password once only and asked to record it. If the password is lost, a new password must be generated using the same process. The user cannot choose their password, but can get a new randomly generated one in the event of compromise. The password essentially becomes indistinguishable from an API key.

laputan_machine··on Inconvenient Truths about TypeScript
You're assuming I'm not a hobbyist programmer (I am). Or that I don't take into account future requirements (I do). That I only care about a passable level of software (I am a big proponent of software craftsmanship... see: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36586248#36587807, and also my original comment talked about maintainability...)

In a hobbyist mentality, go wild! Do whatever makes you happy. In a professional, business environment I want to deliver outcomes first, my personal happiness comes from delivering those outcomes so it matters less on the technical choice.

laputan_machine··on Meta Tells Managers Promotions Will Be Few and Far Between
Been doing this for 13 years, professionally and I see the same thing in the UK. I want to work for a company that doesn't think engineers are "lesser".

We have PhD's in computer science, I have worked with people who have made significant contributions to the tooling of modern languages, and yet a manager who spends most of their time on eBay, Twitter or giving the same talk on "psychological safety" for the 15th time gets lauded? I don't get it.

I'm not a bucket crab, I don't want to drag people down, I just want the same opportunities people in other disciplines get (in the same industry!!)

laputan_machine··on Britain Is a Developing Country
> In the UK, the preoccupations of the “elite” – by which I mean the people, left and right, in politics, government and media whose views shape those of the country – are with things like Net Zero (above all), inequality, obesity, delivering Brexit, regulating Big Tech, data ethics and privacy, cutting immigration, gender and racial pay gaps, and other priorities that are either unrelated to, or diametrically opposed to, making the country richer.
laputan_machine··on Inconvenient Truths about TypeScript
A programming language is a tool to get to the desired outcome. The 'best' programming language is one that allows me to get to my desired outcome the quickest, with the fewest bugs and highest maintainability.

For me (and, I would argue, for pretty much everyone), that would probably be whatever programming language I am most familiar with. Unless the language has huge barriers compared to another one I am somewhat familiar but less familiar with.

I wish the dogmatic hate on JS would stop, it was boring 10 years ago, it's still boring.

What else is there except reward or punishment?

You're rewarded for doing something with something extrinsic (nice food, money, new toy) or intrinsic (doing the thing makes it rewarding), or punished with something extrinsic (jail, fine) for doing bad things, or intrinsic (guilt, social exclusion).

Incentives and disincentives rule society, learning to harness habits and incentives has helped me improve my life remarkably

If you've figured out something else, I'm sure I'm not the only one curious!

> I also find it bizarre that so many people feel precious about the code.

All of the inclusivity movements that have happened in my workplace have involved hiring people unfit to do their job. I don't care what your background is, I care what you bring to the table.

The issue around unfettered inclusivity is that it enables grifters to gain positions of power based purely on superficial elements that they possess.

The original meaning of diversity was "diversity of thought" -- it has been co-opted to mean something totally different.

Terrible advice. Abitrary rules (make 10 folders!) is just utterly bonkers for everyone except a small subset of people who could categorise their life in this way.

It really grates on me when people offer solutions that work for them, as if they will work for everyone.
