lappa··on Filecoin – Data storage network and crypto-currency based on Bitcoin
Filecoin uses what they call "proof-of-retrievability".

The thing about proof-of-work is that it is a proof. Assuming that sha256d is unpredictable, you will on average have use a certain amount of energy to find a low hash value.

With proof-of-retrieval, the name itself is lying. There is no way to prove that a piece of data went from one person to another. It should be called invoking-trust-in-retrieval-and-proof-of-having-the-file.

Along with that, because hashes have the property of being irreversible, blocks can be hashed and the winner cannot change the block without doing work again.

Because of these properties, filecoin must use PoW (which their whitepaper states they do).

According to their whitepaper, you must first construct the proof of ownership in the file, then you perform the PoW with that seed.

This leads to huge economies of scale because the startup cost of mining at equilibrium will include storing an abundance of files (probably all of them).

You need to speed up the game by a factor of 5 to 20.

Also, I have infinite grains, so I just keep selling 10000 of them when there is demand again, which brings the price back to 0.

lappa··on Bitcoin Falls Below $400
The hole in your theory is that a rational miner may think the price will multiply by 100 (for example), so buying $1000 mining equipment will be profitable because it will yield $700 worth of BTC (70% figure estimated from nothing and is really an arbitrary number as long as it is less than 100%), which will eventually be $70,000. The problem is that buying $1000 worth of bitcoins would yeild $100,000 in a $1000 investment rather than $70,000 in a $1000 investment.

The real reasons people continue to mine are one or more of these: -It is fun -It secures the network -They wrongly think they will make a profit

lappa··on A decentralized anonymous marketplace
Yes, every object, listings, ratings, etc. should be PoS instead of PoW. I suppose the hosts can define their throttling in the contract they make with the seller, so that isn't my decision.

PoB tx usually do require a change output along with it's burn output, and even if we weren't concerned with that, 200 bytes is 1/5000th of a block meaning only 5000 objects can be broadcasted per 10 minute period (assuming everything in the bitcoin block is a PoB tx). In other words, it doesn't scale.

lappa··on A decentralized anonymous marketplace
Just a note: This is not decentralized, it is just a centralized marketplace using the decentralized network Bitmessage.
lappa··on A decentralized anonymous marketplace
I agree and don't plan on using PoW other than in the proof of concept. V0.2 should use PoS because proof of burn (as a believe you are suggesting) is bad for the Bitcoin network (large number of unnecessary tx) and expensive (you don't want to pay the tx fee every time you view a listing). PoS doesn't require any tx in the Bitcoin network (ignoring those you used to earn the stake).

Thanks for the comment. Let me know if you have any other concerns.

I've written a description for the potential implementation of a decentralized pseudonymous marketplace. I would appreciate any critical analysis of it.

lappa··on Jamaican Bobsledders Ride Dogecoin Into Olympics
99% of dogecoins code originates from the Bitcoin project. The other 1% is Litecoins proof of work and other random garbage including 10k block rewards at the end (originally a bug they didn't want to fix), 1 year for all coins to be generated, random rewards, 500 million transaction limit (originally a bug that they fixed and due to incompetence caused a massive fork) the security and economic implications of which likely hasn't been considered AT ALL, yet people still argue that these arbitrary changes are genius.

The reason they argue that the changes are genius is because they either have been fooled by someone with a stake in dogecoin, or have a stake in dogecoin themselves.

lappa··on Jamaican Bobsledders Ride Dogecoin Into Olympics
You would call that successfully? The developers have no idea what they're doing. They copied bitcoins code, but didn't realize that they made a 500 million doge transaction limit, so they gave their users a short period of time to update their clients. They ended up with a fork after someone made a 500 million doge tx which could have allowed many many doublespends. Doge will not be able to scale up to real economic activity unless they get a real dev team.
lappa··on Why Dogecoin is Important
That explanation didn't make any sense at all. What do you mean group together? In a mining pool? That already exists with bitcoin.

Also, how is predictable behavior a bad thing? Perhaps the US mint should have super-mint months where they print 20 times as much currency as they usually do.

lappa··on Why Dogecoin is Important
Do you really think random rewards is a technical advantage? I can understand why you might (wrongly) think the other six are advantages, but ending on that note makes me think you're just trolling.
lappa··on Why Dogecoin is Important
This is simply false. Many mining pools allow you to push to transaction to them. If your first spend has a 0.0001btc fee and the second has a 0.001btc fee, they will choose the 0.0099btc fee.

You cannot monitor transactions being sent to miners if they aren't propagated through the normal bitcoin network.

Along with that, there have been cases where mining pools have doublespent unconfirmed transactions and stolen lots of bitcoins. GHash stole 3000btc from betcoin https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=327767.0
