Recognizing value isn't "Rabid fanaticism" lol.
>recording people in public places
Honestly at this point if I am in public I just assume someone (or something - cctv's everywhere) is recording me at all times.
For me, this is seriously impressive, and I already use LLMs everyday - but a serious "Now we're talkin" moment would be when I'd be able to stand outside of Lowes, and talk to my glasses/earbuds "Hey, I'm in front of lowes, where do I get my air filters from?"
and it tells me if it's in stock, aisle and bay number. (If you can't tell, I am tired from fiddling with apps lol)
It works for what I need it to do.
You can audit the code yourself then. What's stopping you?
*My* kids and dogs. But ...
>doing things that the phone I already own and have on me all the time can do.
Remember what I said about dogs and my kids stopping what they're doing when a phone is out and focusing on the phone instead? It's not "Don't take my picture." It's "whats that in your hand ooooh gimme."
>your Meta ray bans are submitting all your family members to be face scanned by the Meta surveillance capitalism app
Unless you have a solid evidence of THAT (and not some random link), please do not make unsubstantiated claims.
Anyhow, if you're really curious about how it works : Photos are stored on device and then imported via bluetooth/wifi connection manually or when they're charging. _NOTHING_ gets sent to Meta unless I specifically use the multi-modal Meta AI ("Hey Meta, look and tell me x"). All of this information is out there in several places (including Meta's own documents) as to how this works. It's not very hard to find - easier than making unsubstantiated claims.
You should try to have a normal conversation instead of being argumentative. It tends to help people wanting to talk further. This isn't reddit. :)
Not having to write boilerplate code itself also is very handy.
So yes, I absolutely do want this "magic." "I don't like it so no one should use it" is a pretty narrow POV.
"they're doing it for free, no one owes you anything" is always the argument people make when someone does something reasonably dumb and they need to defend the maintainers/devs. They don't owe anyone anything, but people DO HAVE _REASONABLE_ expectations of them.

or some such ;) You may not come across it personally, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. SO is successful as a QA platform(or was anyway) despite this shortcoming, not because it is a feature and it doesn't happen. If a lot of people are talking about the same thing, maybe people should at least pay cursory attention to the issue rather than "No, it doesn't happen" (Not aimed at you, but there are absolutely comments like this every time this gets bought up.)
what's amusing to me is that some people even in this thread are calling it a pro, not a con. I guess our field does indeed attract a certain kind of personality.
Really? Hm, I wouldn't. I can use nuance and clarify my answers and have a respectable back and forth (GPT-4 doesn't call me names when I mess up or say something dumb) and arrive at an answer.
If I license something as MIT, I personally don't care who uses it for what purpose, hell I don't even care generally that they attribute me. I put it out for people to use. But maybe that's just me.
Also I wish for an app. Pls aqua people. Keeping my phone's screen on while I transcribe sucks.
It doesn't list any books that I have publicly though. All you'll see is a login prompt. Books? what books? You can't DMCA me because I only have gutenberg collections in there ;)
speaking of, btw, your library likely has 'partner' libraries where you can borrow stuff too using overdrive/libby. You can often see a list on top right of the overdrive page of your respective library.
Reading Asimov's essays and a Brief history by Bryson etc have left me a desire to learn more.
