lanius··on QDirStat – Treemap Visualization of Directory Statistics
I like using SpaceSniffer on Windows: http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/

It has the best UI by far of all the tools I've tried in this space. Unfortunately not open source.

lanius··on JS Paint – A web-based MS Paint remake
Spiritual successor to /r/place?
lanius··on What Elon Musk Doesn't Get About Urban Transit
> I like people too but not random train passengers. They smell bad, are unattractive and grouchy.

I wouldn't want to ride a train with you either.

lanius··on What the SATs Taught Us about Finding the Perfect Fit
Not to mention variance within a given labeled size itself. Last time I went shopping for jeans, I tried on two pairs from Levi's with the same cut and labeled size. One was too tight and the other was too loose.
lanius··on “I Don’t Know, Probably Made My Usual C”
Similarly, Maya Lin's design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial only earned a B in her architecture class at Yale.

lanius··on Why Is Anime Obsessed With Power Lines?
Were they that popular in the US in 2000? Evangelion started airing on Adult Swim in 2005, and Lain started in 2002 on TechTV IIRC.
lanius··on Show HN: Airmash – Multiplayer Missile Warfare HTML5 Game
Very fun! I think the Mohawk helicopter has the most potential due to its strafe ability.
lanius··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
Good thing I haven't updated yet. I wonder how many machines are vulnerable?
lanius··on Ask HN: If you could automate anything, what would you automate?
Cooking. I cook my own meals in order to eat healthy, but the cooking itself is incredibly tedious.
lanius··on Initial Coin Offerings Horrify a Former S.E.C. Regulator
>I.C.O.s represent the most pervasive, open and notorious violation of federal securities laws since the Code of Hammurabi

Can someone explain this statement to me? Is he saying I.C.O.s are the most flagrant violations occurring since the Code of Hammurabi was written, or is the Code of Hammurabi itself a violation?

lanius··on A Man Who Has Lived Alone on an Island for 28 Years
> During all his years on the island, Morandi says he has never gotten sick, a quality he attributes to "good genes."

I bet reduced contact with other humans helped as well!

lanius··on Ask HN: Which are your favorite subreddits?
I just found out about this recently: https://www.reddit.com/r/ilikthebred/

The premise is poems written in intentionally misspelled and simple English to mimic animals' inner thoughts. I find them quite whimsical. I wonder if this would be done the same way in other languages?

lanius··on Uber Paid Hackers to Delete Stolen Data on 57M People
Here's an article about that: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/15/books/chapters/freakonomic...
lanius··on Google's latest iPhone rival off to a rocky start
I believe only the Pixel 2 XL is plagued by screen issues. The regular Pixel 2 doesn't seem to have any widespread screen issues.
lanius··on Games Look Bad: HDR and Tone Mapping
I would guess this isn't a priority for the industry because gamers themselves don't care. Case in point: gaming monitors. Gaming monitors advertise high-refresh rates and low input lag but rarely color quality. What percentage of gamers use wide gamut monitors or even perform color calibration?
lanius··on Seven habits of effective text editing (2000)
The individual user's keyboard and mouse proficiency determines their most efficient setup. I'm decent with Vim, but my mouse speed and accuracy is good enough to do many editing tasks with a mouse faster than I could accomplish in Vim.
lanius··on Keyboard latency
Now that would be fun! I think it would be possible to achieve a reasonable typing speed given the right "keyboard layout" (aka the QWERTY equivalent for musical keyboards).
lanius··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
Very useful! I'd love to get a copy of this script if it still exists.
lanius··on Productive on six hours of sleep? You’re deluding yourself, expert says
And yet South Korean students get less than 6 hours of sleep a night. Insane how society just accepts that.
lanius··on Draggable JS – a lightweight, responsive, modern drag-and-drop library
I'm trying to move the pieces so that the lines are continuous along all the faces with no dead ends. This would actually make a pretty fun minigame if it was achievable.
lanius··on Tree Style Tabs Extension Ported to Firefox 57
Wow, I wish I knew about this extension before. Too bad Chrome doesn't have this.
lanius··on Ask HN: Anyone here make a 'comeback' from rock bottom? What is your story?
That really puts things into perspective. I was shocked when my Russian coworker just casually mentioned growing up without running hot water.
lanius··on Hey Synaptics, Can You Please Stop Polling
I wish drivers were open source so we could fix these issues ourselves instead of helplessly waiting for updates from manufacturers.
lanius··on Why I Stopped Using Multiple Monitors
It just depends on what you're doing. If I'm streaming on Twitch, I use one monitor for fullscreen gaming and use an additional monitor to check viewer chat.
lanius··on Coreboot and Skylake, Part 2: A Beautiful Game
I am continually amazed that computers manage to work at all.
lanius··on R.R. Wilson’s Congressional Testimony – Fermilab Archives
Was that speech entirely off the cuff? It was incredibly eloquent.
lanius··on Wading Through AccuWeather’s Response
Any way to narrow down the location further than the zip code? My zip code covers a large area touching the ocean, there's a dramatic weather difference between the coast and 5 miles inland.
lanius··on Essential Phone, available now
I'd be interested to see how reliable this will be. I just want a smartphone that won't freeze/reboot/slow to a crawl seemingly always at the worst possible time.
lanius··on F.lux major update
>Better performance with games (no stutter)

Hopefully this fixes my main issue with f.lux. It seems to cause severe input lag during transitions, making my Windows machine nearly unusable.

lanius··on Inside Andy Rubin's Quest to Create an OS for Everything
>If by some miracle you were to make it all the way to the front door, you’d never get past the retinal scanner.

I thought iris scanners were superior?
