lampshades··on Managing difficult software engineers
This article is depressing because corporate America is depressing.
lampshades··on Canada had poached 10k tech workers from the U.S. – in just 48 hours
He cracked yesterday for some reason, go check out his history.

lampshades··on UUID Collision
Except this, apparently.
lampshades··on Does the “Learn Vim the Hard Way” website still exist?
This is how I learned Vim a decade ago. Highly recommend.
lampshades··on Engineer slapped with suspension after bridge collapsed hours after opening
Fair point. Maybe us programmers are just a class above professional engineers.

Should've been a politician.

lampshades··on Engineer slapped with suspension after bridge collapsed hours after opening
Boeing 737 Max 8
lampshades··on UUID Collision
I clicked this thinking and hoping someone saw a collision. Disappointing that wasn't the case.
lampshades··on Engineer slapped with suspension after bridge collapsed hours after opening
Designed a bridge that injures no-one and collapses a few hours later? 5 year suspension.

Programmed a faulty flight control system that kills hundreds of people and ground all planes that use it for nearly two years? Probably a promotion, if I had to guess.

Can someone remind me why software engineers can't be held to higher standards?

lampshades··on Federal agency tells SF workers to work from home due to unsafe conditions
I disagree. I've always found HN to be a great place to discuss things like this. In fact, HN sometimes feels like one of the only places I can discuss things like this without being downvoted to hell and back.

Speak your mind.

lampshades··on Jira can’t stop people from using it incorrectly
I hate Jira and I hate managers.
lampshades··on The Yandex leak: How a Russian search giant uses consumer data
Originally it was right more often than I expected but now I have a pretty good sense that I'm usually right.
lampshades··on I feel like I made a mistake investing professionally into Flutter
I've interviewed a lot of candidates over my years and technology specific information isn't something I ever look for, unless money is tight.
lampshades··on The Bipolar Lisp Programmer (2007)
I've never had a professor understand me like this. I picked up Lisp during my Freshman year when I bought SICP. If you look at my transcripts you can easily infer my mental state at the time. Some semesters all A's, others all F's (or W's), with no rhyme or reason. I graduated with a 1.7 GPA, showed up high to class (if I showed up at all), and barely made it through. It took me 9 years to graduate between all the stopping and starting, working at Pizza shops most of the way through.

But I never had problems with the programming assignments or the labs, I enjoyed those. And when I finally got my degree, I found out that all it takes to make hundreds of thousands of dollars is to solve a couple of algorithms for someone. I guess it all worked out in the end, although I do hate the corporate world (and have trouble staying anywhere long) with a passion and would very much like to find a way out.

Note: I was put on bipolar medication because of the wild swings in my grades during college, but I don't believe I am actually bipolar so I no longer take it.

lampshades··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
Understandable.

Yeah, I'm a dick online, it's an outlet. No hard feelings.

lampshades··on CNET is deleting old articles to try to improve its Google Search ranking
Yes, I believe you are correct.
lampshades··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
Let me guess, you're autistic too?
lampshades··on CNET is deleting old articles to try to improve its Google Search ranking
You said L3 so I was curious. I looked up the guy's LinkedIn [0] and honestly an L3 engineer would have a lot more context about Google's search. Danny, what do you even do?

lampshades··on CNET is deleting old articles to try to improve its Google Search ranking
Because politics, not solutions, drive big tech.
lampshades··on The Yandex leak: How a Russian search giant uses consumer data
I use Yandex whenever I feel like Google is censoring something. Turns out I feel that way a lot.
lampshades··on Canonical’s recruitment process is long and complex
The irony of almost anyone on Earth, let alone some no-name person on HN, calling Musk a moron, is rich.
lampshades··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
I'm not sure why you think what you said is relevant. Also, you seem insufferable.

Edit: oh, it's probably the autism.

lampshades··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
I don't disagree but I've been dealing with it for years now (since COVID) and nobody has seemed to be able to fix it.
lampshades··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
I'm currently going through interviews and I think "collaboration" and communication is a real thing WFH is missing. You say that people can collaborate real-time from any corner of the planet but that hasn't been my experience. I have had two companies in the last few weeks (out of like 5) where my recruiter had no idea what stage of the process I was in because at some other point some recruiter had picked me up. I had no idea what was going on and neither did they. And when they find out that there is a dual-recruiting process happening, they call me to ask what's happening instead of asking their teammate. So stupid, man.

It doesn't stop there. When I'm actually at work, I'm constantly waiting for hours for responses unless I pull in a manager to move things along. While it's true that with today's tech we can collaborate anywhere, that's not what I see happening in practice. I constantly see miscommunication and misunderstandings that normally would take 10 minutes at someone's cube to resolve that end up taking DAYS to resolve.

lampshades··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
How were you able to soundproof it? I have an office (upstairs) that I would love to soundproof so that I don't have to wear my headphones all day.
lampshades··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
What kind of space did you find and how did you pitch it? The other employee lived in the same town already?

I'd like to do this as well.

lampshades··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
And for other marriages, WFH has been a disaster. I know so many people who have ended up divorced after they were both WFH everyday.
lampshades··on I went to 50 different dentists: almost all gave a different diagnosis (1997)
My dad is a dentist and he’s talked about how in his younger days he was more aggressive with his treatment and as he got older and understood more, he became less aggressive and more of a “wait and see what happens”. He’s mentioned that he commonly sees aggressiveness in treatment with younger dentists.
lampshades··on The back-to-office backfire: Companies ending WFH perks lose out on top talent
Turns out people are more likely to respond to Slack when their boss is behind their back. Who would have thought?
lampshades··on The back-to-office backfire: Companies ending WFH perks lose out on top talent
I've been in that situation (also due to unresponsiveness) as a senior developer working on complicated projects many times.
